Where Do We Come From?

• Descendants of emigrants often wonder what geography they come from.

• But without samples back in the ancestral land, it’s hard to link DNA to specific geography.

Hy Many Larkins• Numerous Annals cite a

Larkin clan along the Shannon River in an area called Hy Many. – East County Galway

• Period around 1,200 – 1,500 CE

• Said to be descended from King Máine Mór– Son of Niall of the Nine

Hostages.

Ancestral Parish Sampling

• Search for parishes with a continuity of the Larkin surname in historical records.– Some of us certainly came from those

ancestors.• Identification and recruitment of individuals

from those parishes for DNA sample.– If emigrants closely match those still in

ancestral parish, very likely their ancestors came from that parish.

Page 6: Larkin DNA Project 2011 Updatefreepages.rootsweb.com/~larkin/genealogy/shared/LarkinDNA012011.pdf16 Laois 10 Borris 1 3 5 24 17 Tipperary 78 Youghalarra 2 6 1 21 18 Longford 15 Killoe

Recruitment

• Anonymous contribution paid for DNA tests from Shannon River area of Ireland– Presentation made at the Larkin Clan Gathering at

Portumna, County Galway, Ireland in 2009• Telephone recruitment of men from Irish

parishes with continuity in historical records– Personal visits and DNA sample collection– Instructional video on YouTube.com

Target Parish Identification

• Record sets across history– Tithe Applotment books of the 1820s

• before the famine– Griffith's Valuation of the 1850s

• immediately after the famine– Modern Telephone Directory

• Supplemental Records– Annals of the Four Masters– Hearth Money Rolls of 1660s

DNA Signature• Identified man with known descent from Larkins

of Lorrha through genealogy research & interviews.– DNA sample L-34

• So if any Larkin in the world tests with this DNA signature in the future, highly likely that his ancestors came from Lorrha parish.

Findings• Identified 14 different Larkin types for R1b DNA

with 37-marker results.• Two largest groups probably originate in Hy

Many along the Shannon River– Constitute about 20% of Larkin surname worldwide.– Part of Niall of the Nine Hostages Irish DNA group

(R1b-M222)• Published in Journal of Genetic Genealogy

(December 2010).
