VADATECH HEADQUARTERSHENDERSON, NEVADA

PGAL provided full architectural services to Vadatech, a computer manufacturing company for the defense, aerospace, industrial and telecom industries, for their new headquarters, research and development and manufacturing center.

The building was designed to Class A standards and comprises 20,000 SF of office/support space, with 30,000 SF

of manufacturing/laboratory area. Of critical importance in the design and layout of the facility was optimization to support efficient production flow. Raw materials and parts flow from receiving to inventory, to the manufacturing floor preparation and assembly areas, to the wash, inspection, touch-up, testing areas and then back to inventory immediately prior to shipping. The raw material and the Finish Goods Inventory have

clear separation. Additionally, state of the art efficiency, and employee comfort and flexibility were client mandates for the design. Programming included conference rooms, engineering lab, manufacturing test lab, EMI chamber lab, environmental lab, shock/vibration lab, shipping and receiving areas, inventory room, manufacturing area, administrative offices, kitchen areas, exercise room and telecommunications room.

The 300,000 SF, 12-story, LEED Gold, Class A building, developed by Gran-ite Properties, sits on a prominent site in Houston’s Westchase district.

The architectural precast elevations feature a two-story cast stone base, high performance glazing, and alu-minum canopies and sunshade de-vices which are all sourced regionally and contain high-recycled content. As part of its sustainable design fea-

tures, the building also boasts an optimized energy performance of 21% over baseline and includes wa-ter conserving plumbing fixtures, on-site recycling, ample bicycle stor-age and extensive native species site landscape development.

The corporate facility boosts a num-ber of tenant amenities including a fitness center with locker/shower fa-cilities, full-service café with optional

outdoor seating, and a corporate lounge area, which includes ample seating and multiple television moni-tors.

The adjacent 6-story parking garage holds 1000+ cars and is connect-ed to the building via a landscaped courtyard.

BRIARPARK GREENHOUSTON, TEXAS

Briarpark Green is the first Class A of-fice building in Houston to be certi-fied Platinum under LEED CS v2.0. The building’s exterior cladding is com-posed of composite metal panels and variegated sandstone masonry units with hand chiseled accents and brick. The three-story entry is flanked by a series of brushed stainless columns and entrance canopy.

Eighty percent of office space is open plan with private offices enclosed in

floor to ceiling glass. The second floor reception area echoes the main floor finishes and is further complemented by granite accents.

The Class A building was designed to surpass energy efficiency code re-quirements and will realize 21 percent increased performance in relation to energy and operational savings. High performance glass, wall and roof as-semblies as well as high recycled con-tent materials are additional green

elements that increase the eco-friendly design without compromising the bud-get. Site orientation to take advantage of northern exposure, building materi-als of recycled steel and concrete com-ponents, indigenous landscaping, low water plantings and creative daylight-ing for the building add to the sus-tainable features. Concrete recaptured from previous development on the site was incorporated in the aggregate mix and reused on the site.

METRO HEADQUARTERSHOUSTON, TEXAS

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) retained PGAL as prime consultant to provide preliminary and final architectural and engineering services for their Down-town Transit Center and Administration Office Building.

The building combines all of METRO’s administrative services and public functions into a single, easily acces-sible location. It has been considered

the jewel in the crown of METRO’s ini-tial $300 million, 7.5-mile, 16-station light rail transit line, which opened in January 2004.

The METRO project was completed us-ing a fast-track design, construction and permitting process required for the simultaneous opening of the tran-sit center—located in the building’s lobby at street level—and the new light rail service.

PGAL was able to achieve the client’s design mandate to demonstrate the appropriate expenditure of public funds, while providing modern and efficient office facilities for METRO’s 800+ employees. In addition to other services, PGAL prepared the $4.4 mil-lion FF&E package for 14 floors of state-of-the-art office and administra-tive space.

WATERSIDE CENTERONTARIO, CALIFORNIA

In April 2007, The Hileman Compa-ny, in partnership with Pacific Coast Capital Partners, acquired this 16-acre master planned office campus located in Ontario California’s Centrelake De-velopment near Ontario International Airport.

The master plan designed by PGAL included office buildings totaling

169,000 SF, along with entitled land for the development of another 150,000 SF office building and a hotel.

PGAL first designed this six-story Class A office building. The building has an elegant first story base and entrance of dark ashlar stone, which opens up to a two-story atrium. Energy efficient glaz-ing, sun protection aluminum accents

at the top of the building, and energy management systems all contribute to the sustainable design.

A paved walking path around the lake is provided as a tenant amenity.

FIVE GREENSPOINT PLAZAHOUSTON, TEXAS

Five Greenspoint Plaza was developed as a build-to-suit single tenant build-ing. Crowned with a classical curved metal roof and illuminated at night, the 460,000 SF building presents a dis-tinctive image in the Greenspoint busi-ness district.

Site development included entry auto court and plazas, featuring outdoor seating, inviting landscaped retreats, and water features to provide gracious entries into the building.

The 1,200-car double helical parking garage adjacent to the building and connected by a covered concourse ac-commodates both secured parking for employees and flexible unrestricted parking for multi-tenant operation.

TORINGDON CENTERCHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA

Toringdon I and II are two of the 12 Class A office buildings with retail space planned in a 1.5 million square foot mixed-use development also designed by PGAL. The buildings are served by a linear pedestrian park and a neo-traditional roadway network.

An urban streetscape was of particu-lar importance and was achieved with custom brick paving and dramatic

architectural lighting. The buildings’ heights are between two and five sto-ries. Grades across the width of the building necessitated a multi-level lobby providing street access on both sides of the building.

PGAL’s goal was to design a highly marketable, yet economical suburban mixed-use project designed with New Urbanism principles. Bringing the com-

plex to market quickly required close cooperation with the developer and sales staff to meet the overall develop-ment needs and individual tenant re-quests. Designs are similar in scale and materials for economical and compati-bility reasons. Working closely with the contractor resulted in an expedited set of production documents.

HIMMARSHEE LANDINGFORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA

Himmarshee Landing, Fort Lauder-dale’s first true mixed-use develop-ment, combines retail/restaurant, an office center, parking structure and townhouses to create a neighborhood setting that complements downtown’s historic Colee Hammock section.

City zoning reforms and eastward movement created a demand for downtown residential development.

The project is designed to realize the full innovative potential of the City’s XGR zoning category, which designates mixed use, garage with residential and “exclusive” commercial use.

Among the center’s components are nine -story town homes with a “South Florida brownstone” concept. The town homes feature 10-foot ceilings, two-car garages and private courtyards.

The center features office space in four stories with a central two-story atrium, and a five-floor penthouse suite in one wing. There is ground floor retail and restaurant space, with outdoor covered dining; a ground-floor pedestrian plaza for strolling, shopping and dining; and public and private parking invisible from the street, masked by the town homes and offices with access through a formal arched entry way.

Briarpark Green is PGAL’s hallmark for sustainable office design. Designed to meet LEED Platinum Certification stan-dards, the three-story 70,000 sf build-ing has a flexible and efficient building plan that easily accommodates mul-tiple building tenants.

Abundant natural light combined with daylight harvesting technology en-hance the building’s marketability and improve workplace productivity. Entry lobby finishes include natural stones,

sapele wood paneling and premium light fixtures. The second floor recep-tion area echoes the main floor fin-ishes and is further complemented by granite accents and cool airy colors throughout.

Multiple training rooms with state-of-the-art technology, open plan offices, resource library and glass enclosed offices are featured in the upper two levels. Unique ceiling treatments are used for sound absorption with both

broadloom and carpet tiles installed for long-term durability.

Designed to surpass energy code re-quirements, the building realizes 25% increased performance in relation to energy and operational savings. High performance glass, wall and roof as-semblies as well as regional, high re-cycled content materials are additional green elements that increase the eco-friendly design without compromising the overall budget.

KIMLEY-HORN HEADQUARTERSWEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

PGAL designed Kimley-Horn’s West Palm Beach Headquarters, compris-ing 29,000 SF of offices space. The scope of work included relocating the Kimley-Horn offices (formerly located in two buildings) to a relatively new three-story shell office building where the company would occupy the sec-ond and third floors. Designing an

efficient, functional, and cost effective space to accommodate 120 engineers, planners, landscape architects, and support personnel was the PGAL de-sign team’s primary goal.

Named as one of FORTUNE Maga-zine’s Top 100 Best Companies to work for, it was imperative that the interior

provide a stimulating and produc-tive work environment. As an interna-tional corporation, the use of corpo-rate standards, branding and signage was paramount. Glass enclosed private offices located on the interior allow natural daylight to pour into all of the workspaces which have a 50:50 ratio of private to open office areas.

NOKIA AMERICAN HEADQUARTERSIRVING, TEXAS

PGAL was part of this developer led, design-build team, working closely with Nokia, the building architect and CarrAmerica.

The two design firms jointly developed the concept in a charrette setting. One firm’s design team was responsible for the shell building, core elements and typical floors. PGAL was responsible for the specialty floors and how they related to the shell building. Specialty functions are on floors with hardwall construction that include a reception lobby, conferencing complex interac-

tive product display, full service dining, company store, executive suites and a boardroom with adjacent dining.

In defining Nokia’s goals for a new “World Class Headquarters” Nokia em-phasized that their image must:

▪ Relate to the corporation’s high-tech roots

▪ Reflect their Finnish heritage ▪ Incorporate their philosophy of “Connecting People”

The collaborating firms established a design vocabulary of forms, elements,

colors, and images while incorporat-ing a level of craftsmanship to reflect Nokia’s level of quality. Elements of finely crafted woodwork with crisp edges, wood flooring and neutral car-peting, along with the use of simple material illustrated the Finnish style. Conferencing facilities introduced ways of connecting people while the pre-function lobbies and corner break-out areas offered opportunities for more impromptu gatherings.

LAS T3 PARKING GARAGEMCCARRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

PGAL provided design services to Walker Parking Consultants for design of a new parking garage for McCar-ran International Airport. The facility is compatible with Terminal 3 building, also designed by PGAL. The parking garage is an eight-level 5,954 car ga-rage, with public pickup area on level 1. A double threaded helix provides vertical transportation within the ga-rage.

The architectural design features in the garage include stainless steel mesh screens at three locations where the terminal pedestrian bridges connect to the garage, dynamic signage and envi-

ronmental graphics, Flight Information Display Screens (FIDS) at passenger pick-up, full -service valet, and elec-tronic parking control system.

The garage design uses materials that complement Terminal 3’s design in-cluding metal panels, stainless steel mesh and integrally colored pre-cast concrete are the primary components of the material palette. As Las Vegas is known for its skyline at night, exterior lighting design was a major design consideration. PGAL took care to pro-vide exterior lighting in a measured way, respecting the existing residential neighborhood to the north of the ga-

rage/terminal while providing a unified lighting design solution.

The garage is served by a 11,000 SF Parking Administration Building, which houses the revenue, security, opera-tions and IT needs for the T3 Garage. This building is an independent struc-ture that is approximately 30 feet east of the garage and includes the parking toll plaza and canopy. The Adminis-tration building has a tilt-up concrete structure with stainless steel mesh ac-cents in a compatible color scheme to the garage and terminal.
