What’s All the Fuss About Double-Glazing?
Double-glazed windows are the standard in America and Europe and with the
introduction of the 6 –star energy rating system, they’re becoming essential in
Australia. After all, your building isn’t truly insulated if your windows are leaking
heat and cold.
Double-glazing works by creating a sealed air chamber between two layers of
glass. Filled with inert Argon gas, the air gap acts as a thermally-insulating cell,
blocking the transfer of heat via conduction. It’s like putting a blanket over the
window!
With effective planning, double-glazing can drastically reduce the transfer of hot
and cold air through your windows to:
Improve the natural comfort of your home
Reduce your need for artificial cooling and heating
Save you money on rising electricity bills

ThermalHEART The Ultimate In Window Performance
Double-glazing will reduce the
transfer of heat through glass,
but what about the aluminium
frames?
Exclusive ThermalHEART
windows feature a reinforced
nylon insulator which creates a
thermal break within the
aluminium frame.
Available in both residential
and commercial suites, this
innovative technology offers
32% greater thermal efficiency
than standard double-glazed
windows.
The impact of each building element on thermal performance is highly
complex and best assessed by an expert. There are, however, some basic
design principles to optimize the comfort of your home.
The ideal home is built to run along an East-West axis with living areas
located to the north and bedrooms to the south. Windows can then be
designed as follows:
NORTH:
North-facing windows receive most sunlight in winter and moderate heat in
summer. These windows should be maximized and double-glazed to retain
heat from the winter sun. Retractable shading is a good option to ensure
comfort in summer. Double-glazing is recommended and will offer
performance superior to low-e glass.
SOUTH:
South-facing windows receive no direct sunlight in winter and require only
minimal shading in summer. These windows should be kept fairly small but
normal use of bedroom curtains or blinds will remove the need for
double-glazing.
EAST/WEST:
East and west-facing windows receive the majority of sunlight in summer and
should be kept small and well-shaded. It is recommended that utility rooms
such as the laundry and bathroom be located here so that insulation is not
required. However, bedrooms and living areas to these elevations will re-
quire double-glazing with a layer of low-e glass.
“It is often wrongly assumed that double-glazing is only for cold climates. In fact, the best performance levels … can only be achieved by double-glazing.” - Your Home Technical Manual
Low-E Glass And Double-Glazing The Perfect Partners
Energy-Efficient Building Where Do Windows Fit In?
Low-emissivity (low-e) glass works
on a different principle to
double-glazing. Where
double-glazing works to prevent
heat transfer via conduction,
low-e glass reduces heat transfer
via radiation.
Low-e glass features a coating on
the inside surface which
reduces the amount of heat
being absorbed by the glass and
then radiated into the building.
It also acts to dramatically
reduce UV penetration.
Low-e glass can be laminated,
toughened and processed and is
available in a range of colours.
For ideal thermal performance,
consider including a layer of
low-e glass in your double-glazed
units.
The combination of superior
Insulation with impressive
solar control offers up to 30%
better performance than
standard double-glazing!

Why is Open Windows double-glazing so much cheaper?
Many window manufacturers
do NOT offer double-glazing.
Those that do, will have
separate window systems for
single and double-glazing. The
two products look different
and can look odd if combined.
Open Windows’ systems were
developed by a team of
experienced fabricators,
architects and engineers
aiming to create a product
free from the limitations of
the existing window market.
The result was a suite of
windows which can
accommodate single or
double-glazing using the same
window frames!
Double-glazed windows are
instantly cheaper, more
readily available and
aesthetically consistent when
combined with single-glazed
options.
uPVC vs. Aluminium The Double-Glazing Debate
COST
Imported from America and Europe, uPVC windows carry a price tag far
beyond most Australian home-owners. They can be up to three times the
price of aluminium double-glazed windows!
COLOUR SELECTION
Available only in white, uPVC can leave you designing the rest of your home
to match the colour of your windows! Aluminium windows offer hundreds of
powder-coat colours including pearlescent and textured finishes.
DURABILITY
uPVC is a form of treated plastic which can endure for an extended period
without cracking or peeling. Under normal conditions, a quality uPVC window
will offer a lifespan of 20-25 years. Aluminium, however, is naturally resistant
to weathering and can last for up to 50 years!
STRENGTH
uPVC windows are reinforced with steel inserts to achieve the required wind
loading performance. These strengthening bars eventually corrode with the
intrusion of moisture and air. Aluminium offers exceptional natural strength,
supporting large spans of glass with no need for reinforcement. 3
