A world map

* Display a world map and, pointing to Japan, say, "Japón." Ask students to repeat after you. Do the same for "Inglaterra", "Grecia", "Alemania", "Francia" "Italia" and "los Estados Unidos".* Say "Tengo banderas." and display the flags of Japan, England, Greece, Germany, France, and Italy on the board.

VIEWING ACTIVITIES

Paper flags of the above countries (magnetic tape on back), or use real flags if you have them.Activity Masters/Sheets 16a, 16b and 16c

PRE-VIEWING ACTIVITIES

* Match the flags with the countries. If students are uncertain as to which flag corresponds to a particular country, show the segment again.

* This is a good time to look at a map of the world. Ask students to identify the countries that they know where Spanish is spoken as a first language.

* Show the scene completely through for context. Show it again, this time pausing after each cyclist says where he is from. Ask students to repeat the name of the country.* Display the flags and ask the class to pay close attention during the scene, so that they can identify them afterward.

POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES (ctd)

* Use Activity Sheets 16a and 16b. Pronounce the capital cities. Point out "los Estados Unidos" and "España" because they are not featured in this Lesson's video segment. Have students fill in the bottom section, matching the flags to the countries and coloring them.

* Reinforce the capital cities by tossing a beanbag to students. Say the country, and the student must say the corresponding capital city. For variation, say the capital city, and the student must say the corresponding country.Note: The captial city of Germany is now officially Berlin.

* Have students make "banderas" of some of the Spanish-speaking countries that came up in the previous discussion. Some of them could include: Spain, Equatorial Guinea , or Central or South American countries.

* Play the International Cyclists Game. Make signs with the country names or flags to tape to backs of eight students. Find pictures of the following cultural monuments and place flash cards of them in the room:

Inglaterra - Big BenFrancia - La Torre Eiffel Italia - La Torre de Pisa España - una bailarina flamenco

Alemania - un chico en lederhosenGrecia - el PartenónJapón - una pagodaEstados Unidos - Estátua de la Libertad

Select eight students to act out the "Where are you from?" scene. After having acted out the scene, have each racer also "cycle" over to a map and point out the country they represent. Finally, each student would pick from the table the correct cultural symbol that represents his or her country and tape it on the big map. This exercise could be repeated with seven more students the next day.

* Unit 2 - Watch and Play - Where do you come from? - Game "a" and game "b".

ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONSYou may be able to obtain real flags (free) from embassies or consulates.
