Dear Reader,

Welcome to the Late Spring Edition of Your Local Journal. Well dare I

say it, I think Spring may just have finally arrived! It certainly took it’s

time though didn’t it. Roll on much warmer days, it’s already wonderful

to have more daylight hours although the only snag for me with that is

that Daisy thinks it’s time for breakfast as soon as its light! Blackout

blinds are certainly in order if I am to get a full nights sleep...

So has the Front Cover got you in the mood for some swashbuckling

fun? Cambridge Touring Theatre are bringing Treasure Island to the

gardens of Crosby Hall (CHET) on Saturday 15th June and it promises to

be an unmissable afternoon of entertainment for all the family. You can

read all about it on page 6 and also enter a competition to win a Family

Ticket to the performance. Also worth mentioning are the beautiful

gardens of Crosby Hall which have been totally redesigned in the last

few years. If you would like to take a tour of the gardens you can go

along on Sunday 2nd June from 2-5pm where there will be craft stalls

and tea and cake available too!

If you are a Model Railway enthusiast or would like to be one (!) then

you’ll be very happy to hear that Liverpool Model Railways annual

exhibition is once again taking place at Old Christ Church in Waterloo.

My dad was very keen when I was little and I spent hours watching him

set up his layouts in the attic and playing with the models, carefully of

course! We went along to last years exhibition and it really is worth a

visit, you can find out more on page 27.

Lois on the Allotment has unfortunately had to take some time out

again for this edition, however we have a very amusing article by keen

gardener Jonathan Wild, who talks about the return of the little

people! To find out what I’m talking about turn to page 20, it really is a

good read.

So that’s about all from me, please don’t forget to let me know about

any events you may have planned over the next few months. You can

call me on 07531 156758 or e-mail [email protected] and as

always, please don’t forget to mention the Journal

when contacting anyone featured as without our

advertisers there wouldn’t be a Journal.

Happy Reading!

Cramp is a common andusually harmless conditionwhere muscles suddenlybecome tight and painful.Mostly cramps occur for noapparent reason, but certainthings can trigger them suchas pregnancy, exercise orsome medications.During cramp the affected muscle fibres contract orshorten suddenly, causing pain. This spasm can lastfrom a few seconds to several minutes. Afterwardsthe affected muscle might remain tender for a fewhours. Most cases of cramp require no medical treatmentand can be relieved by simply stretching theaffected muscle. Applying warmth to the area canhelp too. Consult your doctor if you suffer frequent night-time cramps which affect your sleep, or if you haveother symptoms such as numbness or swelling, which may mean you need blood or urine tests torule out underlying medical conditions.

USEFUL TIPS FOR NIGHT CRAMPSStretch your calf muscles before bed.Sleep with your feet rested against a pillow to keepthem pointing upwards. If you sleep on your front, allow your feet to dangleover the edge of the bed so calf muscles are nottensed.Keep sheets and blankets loose.Wear bed socks to keep your feet toasty. Warmmuscles are less likely to spasm. Sarah Davey

alifornia is in many ways a dreamdestination. For the uncounted thousandsof Mexicans who sneak across the borderevery year it offers the dream of a better

life and it has held out the dream of stardom tomillions of wannabe actors. I just dreamed of theholiday of a lifetime and hoped that Californiamight deliver the goods. After years of sunshine holidays I wanted somethinga bit more adventurous, but I wasn’t prepared togive up catching the rays on the beach completely. Afly-drive grand tour of California seemed like theperfect solution. My girlfriend and I scrounged everybit of holiday we possibly could and managed to get16 days in California plus two days for flying. It is along way to California, 14 hours on the plane, and itis 8 hours adrift of the UK so jetlag can be aproblem. We’d made a block booking for 12 nightswith Best Western Hotels which allowed us to stayanywhere in California and was great value formoney. After a night close to the airport, we pickedup the car and set out to explore. Our first port of call was Laguna Beach, a very stylishresort just south of LA. We found a lovely littleguesthouse set around a courtyard full of flowersand set about chilling out for a few days. We spentour days on the beach which is terrific with softgolden sand and sea like bathwater, but with wavesbig enough to surf on. The natives were friendly andinvited us to meet up for a drink in the evening. Onthe way into town we went into a bar which was fullof fearsome looking Hell’s Angels. Strangely, theywere all drinking coffee and when we got talking tothem it turned out that they all worked in IT – only

in California! Laguna Beach is a very chilled place foran evening out but I quickly discovered thatCalifornians almost have a phobia of alcohol; drinkthree pints of beer and you are regarded as analcoholic but, oddly enough, they don’t have anissue with someone drinking a lot of wine. After three days in the sun we headed south againto San Diego to visit Sea World. This is basically anenormous zoo which is home to all things aquatic;they even had a whale recuperating in a gigantictank, an unforgettable sight. We spent the eveningin La Mar, a tiny resort just up the coast. The BestWestern Hotel was fantastic, right on the beach. Thenext day involved a trip to Disneyland, the originalDisney theme park. It’s a bit old fashioned comparedto Euro Disney, with long queues for all the rides;also, if you don’t believe America has an obesityproblem, a trip to Disneyland will change your mind. That evening we took a balloon ride, a popular thingin La Mar. Sipping a glass of Champagne whileskimming silently over the coastal mountains wastruly magical, definitely a highlight of the holiday. The next morning we set out bright and early for LasVegas which is everything you expect it to be, butstill well worth a visit - a full scale sea battle outsideyour hotel room is not something you see every day.A decent win at the roulette table paid for our hotelrooms and meals during our stay, a definite bonus. We made our way back to the coast via Death Valleypassing through the most incredible scenery I haveever seen in my life – and, yes, you can fry an eggon the rocks in Death Valley! The rest of our holiday was taken up with visits tothe old Spanish missionary town of Santa Barbara, the exclusive resort of Carmel, San Francisco and theYosemite National Park. I’d love to tell you all aboutit but I’d have to write a book, never mind an article.California is an amazing place with staggeringscenery, beautiful beaches, lovely towns andfriendly people. I’m dreaming of my next visit.Harry Carter

inally they’ve cracked it… for thefirst time in 100 years the Royal (anddon’t we know it!) HorticulturalSociety is relaxing one of it’s ratherstuffy Chelsea Flower Show bye-laws which prohibits the use of“brightly coloured mythtical

creatures” and allowing Gnomes to officiallyinhabit the show this year! Hurray I say – I’ve beena closet admirer and sometime collector of thelittle people for years now and, as far as I’mconcerned, they are welcome to free B&B at ChezJonathan’s anytime they like – provided they aren’tflashing their bits or, dare I say, made of plastic! The Germans may have had a chequered history(don’t mention THE WAR!) but, fair dues, they havealso been responsible for some socio-culturalblockbusters such as Lager, Mercedes and Boschelectric tools, to name but a few. However, it isdebatable whether their greatest gift to the world aswe know it was our little Gnome – who wasofficially ‘born’ to a sculptor by the name of Griebelin 1844. Since that momentous date, the popularity ofgarden gnomes has ebbed and flowed. In the sixtiesand seventies they were a popular decoration forfront gardens right across the country, for somereason mainly styled on Snow White’s Seven Dwarfs. I always remember walking to school as a kidthrough our local estate and seeing wholepanoramas from the infamous Disney film, witheach Gnome lavishly painted and complementing

the equally gaudy but perfectly aligned ranks ofbedding plants. It might not have been hautecouture garden design, but somehow it felt rightand it was certainly better than the wheelless carsraised on milk crates, derelict freezers and stolenshopping trolleys that decorate the same gardensthese days!Unfortunately, nowadays Gnomes are viewed as ameasure of bad taste, ranking alongside crazy pavingand decking with the more ‘serious’ gardenaficionados – which is probably why I rebelled allthose years ago and decided I’d introduce a few toblow a raspberry in the face of the ‘establishment.’My first few (yes, one had a fishing rod, one had abarrow and one was happily smoking some fruityshag in his Meerschaum!) cost me quite a fewBelgian francs because they were the real deal andhad some pedigree – or so the Flemish antiquedealer led me to believe. Since then I’ve added afew less well-bred chaps from local junk shops in aneffort to maintain a healthy gene pool and to addsome youth and vigour to the colony. For someonethat enjoys the solitude of gardening it’s actuallyquite nice to know that you’ve got some companyas you toil in your flower beds, but at least this lotaren’t going to ask any difficult questions or stealyour tools. Most of my old guard are now officially geriatric andgently rotting away (or whatever plaster does)amongst the Delphiniums and Peonies – a fittingend for such noble and jolly garden friends. Farbetter than the ignomious end Basil Fawlty’s Gnomesuffered after being ‘inserted’ into his incompetentIrish builder – although there are a lot of Chelseafolk who will regard this as being the best repositoryfor all of them!Jonathan Wild

CROSBY ANDDISTRICTLIONSYoung AmbassadorSchemeIt is a misconception that all young people inthe community are selfish and uncaring, asthe media often portray them. Instead, manyshow a great deal of care and compassion topeople within the community. The Lions Young Ambassador scheme acknowledgesthe work of young people working as volunteersand gives them the recognition they deserve...boosting their self-esteem, their confidence inthemselves and highlighting the charities andvolunteer groups with which they are involved. There are so many young people working in ourcommunities who enhance the lives of others. Theyare often found at Scout and Guide Groups, StJohns Ambulance, Red Cross, ATC, Army Cadets, SeaCadets, Young Carers & Youth clubs, schools andthe local church. If you are someone who works closely withyoungsters in the community and know someonewho fits the criteria then Crosby and District Lionswould be very pleased to hear from you andsupport that young person to become the YoungAmbassador of the 21st Century. The young personmust have reached their 15th birthday but not their19th birthday on or before the 30th June next year.

Teja Madipatti (18) who, by giving her time to helpothers less fortunate than herself, has just won thisyear’s Lions Clubs International District YoungAmbassador of the 21st Century trophy, beatingother young people in the north-west. Teja wassponsored and supported by Crosby & District LionsClub and received a bursary of £500 as a Districtwinner.

Dracula - A Counting Primerby Jennifer Adams and Alison Oliver

Book ChoiceFrom the moment you pick upthis board book, you know it isdifferent. The Gothic colourscheme is a clue, there are nopastels here, only purple, blackand grey. The vampire on thecover is admittedly rather cute, but he is still recognisably Count Dracula. And asyou work though the text...well, you can CALLthem boxes if you like, but they are coffins.Honestly. Coffins. So why am I recommending this book? Becausequite simply, the concept and execution are superb. The BabyLit series, which features Dracula alongsidePride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre and Romeo andJuliet, introduces classic literature in the form of acounting book. All are beautifully designed, withappropriately thematic illustrations, and basedcarefully on the text. So, Dracula (my favourite, although Little Miss Austen comes a close second)features one castle, four ships, five heroes and theaforementioned nine 'boxes'. The attention to detailis meticulous. The Demeter of course is one ofthose four ships, and the page featuring sevenletters and diaries is almost a miniature telling ofthe whole tale.My own children are past the board book stage butthat doesn't matter, because I wouldn't give themthis book anyway, and not because it is too scary,oh no, it is too good. It is mine. Kath Bennett
