these group recognitions, 3 very

whom Our Lady of the Lake Col-

Alysha Bonvillain was the recog-

present and on hand to greet and

those honored at this event, and
to everyone who has put so

shine so brightly in its past, pre-
sent, and future!

September 22, 2012 saw the
enactment of a splendid celebra-
tion through Our Lady of the
Lake College: that of the annual
luncheon in honor of our col-
lege’s pride, the distinguished
alumni who in the past have
called our academic programs
home. Because Our Lady of the
Lake College is focused so cen-
trally upon the students attending
this great institution, a special
place is necessarily preserved in
the hearts of all who hold this
college dear for these alumni, our
former students. Included in this
event was a special recognition of
the graduating class of 1962, who
this year celebrate their 50th com-
mencement anniversary. Other
students who graduated in classes
prior to this were similarly distin-
guished, along with the class of

Going to the National Student
Leadership Forum during the first
week of November, 2012 in
Washington, D.C. was an enrich-
ing and encouraging experience
for me. The entire forum was
focused on enhancing leadership
in young individuals and using
Jesus Christ as a model for lead-
ership. There was emphasis
placed not only on the impor-
tance of relationships and men-
tors, but also on the use of small
groups in life because just as Jesus
Christ surrounded himself with a
small group (the twelve disciples),
so should we. Jesus impacted the
lives of his disciples, and from
there, those twelve went out to
impact the world.
The thing that separates lead-
ers from other people is that
leaders have almost a disregard
for failure. To be a leader, takes
courage and oftentimes you are
called to go outside of your com-
fort zone and step across that
line. As a leader, constantly
strive to do things that grow you
and also do things that scare you.
Make sure that you are living for
your personal goal and passion in
life. Surround yourself with oth-
ers so that when you’re not
groups at meals as well as had a
few hours each day to meet with
them. These small group sessions
can best be described as cleansing
sessions that were comprised of
life story sharing and rehabilitation
for each member of the group. I
believe this helped us grow in our
leadership roles because it was
rather challenging for most of the
girls to open up completely to
The forum was based on the
leadership that Jesus exhibited
during his three substantial years
of teaching where he gained his
initial followers. We were as-
signed small groups that we
would stay with for the duration
of the weekend. Mine was group
13 that consisted of 9 other phe-
nomenal females from across the
nation. We ate with our small
people they had just met. I think
that this was the most important
part of the forum because it gave
each girl the opportunity to
cleanse and look at life through
the eyes of her other group
members. It allowed for insight
on leadership and how to lead a
group of followers regardless of
your past because after all, from
adversity leaders are born. I got a

The costumes were creative,
the competition was neck-and-

collected for the Greater
Baton Rouge Area Food
Bank at SGA’s 5th Annual

For the first time in
SGA history, over eighteen (18)
teams of four competed in the
wildly exciting bowling games.
Students/Staff “matched” their
creative team names with their
smashing costumes – teams such

SGA Servant Leadership Purple Day A good time was had by all during
the 2012 SGA Servant Leadership
Purple Day held Thursday, October
25, 2012 at the Commons and Con-
ference Hall. Over 200 students
participated in the day long events.
Brother Paul O’Keeffe, OFM, flew in
from Washington DC to be with us
during the day; he spoke about Ser-
vant Leadership as well as new and
exciting mission trips to Washington
DC and Bolivia in the near future.
Brother Paul works with Franciscan
Mission Service, a 22-year-old inter-
national mission service experience
for lay people. Students enjoyed deli-
cious tacos from Garcia’s Taco and
Grill during the afternoon. SGA
handed out free purple tote bags to
all students in attendance. Students,
faculty and staff voted for their favor-
ite haiku entries in the SGA HAIKU
CONTEST; students were sponsored
by various students groups and or-
ganizations on Campus. The student
receiving the most votes for her
haiku entitled “Making People Your
Passion” was Hannah Johnson, and
she was sponsored by Phi Theta Al-

Farewell from Dr. Suzanne Carpenter
Sometimes life encourages change. After 30 years in the nursing profession (twenty of which were spent teaching here at OLOL College);
because of my husband's recent health concerns, we are relocating to our mountain home in Colorado. This means that my last day working
at the College will be January14, 2013. Working with you, and serving students has been a blessing in my life. We have been encouraged to
make this move by my husband's doctors, since the Colorado climate and terrain has been helpful to his
health in the past. We are praying for a relaxing recovery and
successful rehabilitation from his recent surgeries. I ask for
your prayers as my husband and I begin this new journey to-
gether. May God Bless you all.
