Dog Boarding Newcastle

Word of command: "Heel". This is a natural development of the previous exercise and its object

is to instill in the dog the same positional sense as before, without the assistance of the lead.

Success in this phase is entirely dependent on the standard achieved in training and should be

commenced by gently removing the lead from the collar whilst the dog is on the move beside

the owner. The lead should still be carried, and should the dog show any errant tendencies the

lead should be reconnected and the dog given guidance. It is important that the dog does not

know when he is on or off the lead. Early practice in this exercise should be limited to extreme

short periods and as proficiency increases, changes of pace and direction should be included.

When the dog is efficient at this the collar can then be removed.

Dog Training Methods

Word of command: (Stand): The object of this exercise is to train the dog to remain in a

stationary position as commanded to standing beside the owner.

This training should be given with the dog in the heel position whilst on lead, and should be

practiced by the handler gradually slowing down his pace of walking with the dog. The

command "stand" should be given and the handler should slowly come to a halt, at the same

time drawing his left hand along the dog's body, commencing near the withers and finishing

near the croup. Any attempt to sit or go down must be forestalled by slight pressure under the

dog's body. The exercise should be practiced in varying circumstances in conjunction with

heeling.

Word of command: "Sit”: The object of this exercise is to teach the dog to take up a sitting

position on the left side of the owner with its shoulder close to the knee of the owner. The head

quarters and paws of the front feet only being on the ground. With the dog standing beside the

owner, the owner should use the right hand to lift the forequarters of the dog slightly upwards

and backwards and at the same time press the hindquarters down and forward with the

command “sit".

Care should be taken to ensure that the pressure by the left hand is applied on the croup, as if

applied elsewhere, especially in the region of the kidneys, it may cause the dog pain and tend to

make it shy away.

It is important to ensure that the dog assumes a correct comfortable sitting position. Lazy or

wide positions should be corrected by making the dog move to the required position. The

handler should not adjust his position to suit the dog. The exercise should be practiced when

mastered with the heel work.
