Preface

The medical terminology is composed of words and word-combinations used

to denote scientific notions in the field of medicine and health care. The medical

terminological system is made up of three subsystems: 1) Anatomical Terminology,

2) Clinical Terminology, and 3) Pharmaceutical Terminology.

The course is aimed at mastering the basic principles of formation of Latin

pharmacological terms and enabling their active use. Students will learn to construct

the Latin part of prescription and to translate it from Latin into English.

The study guide is written in accordance with the requirements of the Federal

State Educational Standard of Higher Education and is designed for English speaking

students. It consists of 5 lessons composed of the theoretical material and practical

tasks (grammar and lexical exercises). The theoretical part is presented in an

intelligible form with the use of tables and examples facilitating the understanding of

the rules and principles of constructing the pharmaceutical terms. The practical tasks

include exercises for the class work and those for the home work. The course is

supplied with a sample test for the independent preparatory work before writing a

test. The sample test is supplied with keys (Appendix 3).

The guide is provided with Latin-English-Russian and English-Latin-Russian

dictionaries. Multiple-choice tests are presented in both Russian (Appendix 1) and

English (Appendix 2) and are supplied with keys.

PHARMACEUTICAL TERM ELEMENTS (COMBINING FORMS). MAIN

DRUG FORMS. STRUCTURE OF PHARMACEUTICAL TERMS.

The pharmaceutical terminology is the terminology used in Pharmacology

(derived from the Greek ―pharmacon‖ – ―drug‖). Pharmacology is the study of

medicinal substances.

The Latin pharmaceutical terminology includes the names of drugs

(Analginum, Corvalōlum) and drug forms (tabuletta, unguentum), medicinal plants

(Chamomilla, Belladonna) and their parts (radix, flos), chemical elements (Kalium,

Oxygenium), acids (acidum ascorbinicum), oxides (Hydrogenii peroxydum), salts

(Natrii nitris), etc.

PHARMACEUTICAL

TERM ELEMENTS (COMBINING FORMS) Most drug names contain specific Greek and Latin noun roots (pharmaceutical

term elements) expressing certain pharmaceutical information. The knowledge of

these roots will allow to write drug names correctly as well as to recognize them in

the names of drugs and so get information about their therapeutic action or chemical

composition.

are written with the capital letter.

capital letter as well.

2. In multiword pharmaceutical terms a drug form is on the first place. The drug

name (in Genitive) follows the drug form and begins with the capital letter:

3. The names of combined preparations are quoted and are not declined (i.e. stay in

Nominative).

Basic rules:

1. Each drug name is written on a new line, the dose being indicated at the end of the

line;

2. Every new line begins with a capital letter;

3. Every first letter of the next new line is written strictly under the first letter of the

previous one;

4. Any correction in the prescription text is forbidden.
