a note from...Dr. Mortimer StrongMedical Director

The majority of injuries and accidents affecting senior citizens occur at home. Here are a few pointers to steer you away from trouble:

1. Never use throw rugs or loose fitting floor coverings. They tend to make people stumble and fall.

2. Install grab bars in the showers and around toilets.

3. Always install handrails on BOTH sides of staircases, including outside stairs.

4. Always use the same pharmacy for your medications. It is important that your pharmacist knows all of your medications and can check for drug interactions.

5. Never take someone else’s medications and never mix medications in the same container.

It is generally a good idea to use a pillbox and fill it weekly with the appropriate medications for you. This process permits you to know if you have taken all your pills or if you have forgotten to take your medication. Once you have completed a course of medication, or if your medication has changed, be sure to dispose of anything remaining.
