LAUS POLYPHONIAE - EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL – 21ST EDITION Claudio Monteverdi went down in history as the man who once and for all transformed Franco-Flemish polyphony, paving the way for the new expressive Italian baroque style. But is this vantage point not too one-sided? In his Missa in illo tem-pore (1610) Monteverdi reveals himself as an expert Renaissance polyphony. Also his earliest songbooks show how he was steeped in the Renaissance tradition. Therefore Monteverdi was in the first place a vital link between Renaissance and baroque. His oeuvre represents both old and new, tradition and innovation. This respect for tradition is precisely the refreshing perspective from which Laus Polyphoniae 2014 looks at Monteverdi’s music. The festival will not only go deeply into his earliest oeuvre, but will also explore the most fascinating composers among Monteverdi’s contemporaries.

From 22 to 31 August on various historic locations in Antwerp.Discover the full festival programme with concert notes on www.amuz.be.
