There are four layers of the earth:

•The crust•The mantle•The outer core•The inner core

Page 3: Layers of the Earth Brittany Vargo Kelly Swindler Kara Eckes

The Crust

• Outermost solid shell of planet• Thinnest Layer• 0-22 miles thick• 0 degrees Celsius • made up of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary, basalt, diabase, and gabbro

The Mantle

• Second layer of the Earth• Thickest layer• 22-1790 miles thick• 1000 degrees Celsius• made up of plastic, magnesium, Iron, Aluminum, Silicon, and Oxygen

The Outer Core

• Third layer of the Earth• 1790-3160 miles thick• 3700 degrees Celsius• made of liquid metals: Iron, Nickel and contains Sulfur

The Inner Core

• Innermost layer of Earth• 3160- 3954 miles thick• 4300 degrees Celsius• made of solid Iron

Activity

• The point of the activity is to build an example of the layers of the Earth.• Items needed:

- Plastic bottle- Ruler- Marker- Candy

Page 8: Layers of the Earth Brittany Vargo Kelly Swindler Kara Eckes

Step #1• In step one, we will build the inner core of the Earth.• The inner core is equal to 1 inch.• Measure from the bottom of the plastic bottle up and then mark at 1 inch. • Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.

Step # 2

• In step 2, we will build the outer core of the Earth.• The outer core is equal to 1¾ inch.• Measure from the top of the inner core layer up and then mark 1¾ inch.• Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.

Step #3

• In step 3, we will build the mantle layer of the Earth.• The mantle is equal to 3 inches.• Measure from the top of the outer core and then mark 3 inches.• Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.

Step #4

• In step 4, we will build the crust of the Earth.• The crust is equal to ¼ inch.• Measure from the top of the mantle layer and then mark ¼ inch.• Fill the bottle with the candy up to the mark.
