Read – 30 minutes daily Read to and with your child. Encourage your child to read to you for 10 minutes and then share a story with them each day, for example a bedtime story. http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/welcome-back/ for-home/reading-owl/kids- activities (includes storyteller videos) www.oxfordowl.co.uk ebooks – please use these and/or the books available on Purple Mash as reading books. It is important that your child can read most words in the books easily and is able to talk to you accurately about what they have read. When your child comes across an unfamiliar word encourage them to use a range of strategies such as phonics, breaking the word into chunks, looking at the pictures, thinking about what would make sense, reading on in the rest of the sentence. Practise reading the First 100 High Frequency Words. These are in your child’s Reading Record. Spelling – 5 minutes daily Ask your child to practise writing 3 of the Y1 Common Exception Words that they do not know how to spell. Ask them to write each word 3 times, using the look-say-cover-write-check method. If they are confident with spelling the word after a few days ask them to write it into a sentence, with capital letter and full stop.

Purple Mash activities: Just do what you can and know that we are all on this online learning journey together and there is no judgement about how much your child achieves.

Spelling – 5 minutes dailyAsk your child to practise writing 3 of the Y1 Common Exception Words that they do not know how to spell. Ask them to write each word 3 times, using the look-say-cover-write-check method. If they are confident with spelling the word after a few days ask them to write it into a sentence, with capital letter and full stop. If your child can spell all 45 of these words, they can learn to spell the days of the week, months of the year and writing the numbers 0-20 as words e.g. one, two, three, four, five…

Phonics – 15 minutes dailyThis first link is the most important for practising phonics with your child.http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/reading/read-write-inc-phonics-guide-for-parentshttp://www.phonicsplay.co.uk

Please also see phonic snakes & ladders boards that have been added on to the Y1 learning on our website and select the board for your child’s confidence level. Most children will be working on set 2 and set 3 sounds but start where they are most confident. Remember the phonemes that they need to learn are in the middle of your child’s Reading Record. I am going to try doing a phonics revision session on the Purple Mash blog once I have learnt how!

Writing - -1 Purple Mash writing activity will be set each week.-Draw out pictures of what you have been doing in lock down and write 1-2 sentences about each one. Remember to use CL, finger spaces & FS. You could turn it into a little book.

Maths - 30 minutes daily-Purple Mash activities will be set most days-Visit the Top Marks website ( www.topmarks.co.uk ) once a week

-Complete a Maths Frenzy (see the Y1 home learning on the website for the blank maths frenzy sheets) once a week

STEM activity (Science, technology, engineering & maths) –

1.Can you design a bridge out of Lego (or rolled newspaper or anything else you can think of using if you have no Lego) that will hold an apple for 1 minute without breaking?

Think about how high you want it to be, how you will make it strong, whether it is better wide or thin. If you manage this will your bridge hold 2 apples for 2 minutes?2.Can you build a tower that is taller than you? Think about how to make the bottom strong so it doesn’t fall over. Is a wide base better than a small base? How will you measure it to make sure it is taller than you? Take a photo!

Geography – -How many shops can you think of in Buntingford? What do they sell? Which shops don’t we have that you think we should have? Why are some shops still open? Why are they more important?
