those fresh
fruits on ML's table, plus a few new things.
M: Stuart, why are you so greedily looking at my table?
S: Ynwi, zi nde zhuzi shng w kndole chngzi, ptao, tozi, h
yl.
M: Oh, , they are all my favorites! Chngzi, CHENG ZI,
is orange. Ptao, PU TAO, grapes.
S: Tozi, TAO ZI, is peach; and the last one, yl, YA LI, first
tone second
tone, is pear. Out of interest, l itself also means pear, but y'
itself means
duck'. How come these two words came together? Perhaps nobody
knows.
M: Just bear in mind that yl and l both mean pear', and that
will be goodenough.
M: Stuart, What kinds of fruits do you like to eat? N

S: Mm, w xhun ch blu, mhuto, xingjio, h comi. I like eating
pineapple, kiwi fruit, banana, and strawberry. What else? Wait,

MI HOU TAO, mhuto, all in second tone, is kiwi fruit.
S: By the way, mhu means macaque', those nice monkey like
animals, and
to', we've learnt in last lesson, means peach. Maybe the Chinese
believe
macaques really like kiwi fruit, so they give the fruit such a
name.
M: The following two kinds of fruit are really delicious They
are banana,
xingjio, XIANG JIAO, and strawberry, comi, CAO MEI,
