Vol. XXII No. 10
October 2019
As I headed to the Bloomington recently, I noticed the fields, especially the soybeans. Some were a beautiful mix of gold and green, almost seeming like a field of golden flowers. Others were entirely dead with beans prominently on display. Looks like harvest season is finally upon us.
Last September, I had the chance to go in a field and ride with someone in a combine. I got a great lesson on harvesting beans and corn and what life as a farmer can be. In the year since, I've learned what a beautiful sight the dried out bean plants are. But I am still a city-girl in many ways; like much of America, I sometimes forget all of the hard work that goes into the food I eat. We forget the long hours and hard work all farmers go through as they also deal with time limits and weather delays.
Actually, I think farmers today understand the Israelites in a way that many do not. Much of scripture refers to harvest and planting both as metaphors and as ways to structure the year. Two of the three mandated festivals which would structure the calendar for them were based on harvest; Exodus 23:16 states "Observe the Harvest Festival for the early produce of your crops that you planted in the field, and the Gathering Festival at the end of the year, when you gather your crop of fruit from the field."
Technology may have changed how we farm, but much is the same. Plants still need sun and rain at specific times. We might influence the seeds more, but growth and production are still in God's hands in so many ways.
So, we put it in God's hands. As the harvest season begins, I'm praying for all farmers and everyone who works in this industry; may God bless you with a safe and fruitful harvest.
Blessings and Peace, ~Pastor Annie

As World Communion Sunday, almost every church celebrates communion on the first Sunday in October. We are all united in that weekend- celebrating at different hours, but united in our celebration of the Eucharist as we celebrate that we are one in Christ.
World Communion Sunday is a reason to be proud to be Presbyterian. In 1933 Dr. Hugh Thomas Kerr, the then Moderator of General Assembly, first thought up the idea of World Communion Sunday as a way to
bring churches together. In this worship service of Christian Unity, everyone would know the importance of the Church of Jesus Christ, and how each congregation connects with each other.
It took a while for the idea to spread to the world-wide practice that it is today. According to a Presbyterian Outlook Article reprinted on the PCUSA website, Dr. Kerr’s younger son, the Rev. Dr. Donald Craig Kerr, explained:
“The concept spread very slowly at the start. People did not give it a whole lot of thought. It was during the Second World War that the spirit caught hold, because we were trying to hold the world together. World Wide Communion symbolized the effort to hold things together, in a spiritual sense. It empha-sized that we are one in the Spirit and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
The Presbyterian Church (US) as a denomination adopted World Wide Communion Sunday in 1936. While churches in other denominations were invited to celebrate with us from the beginning, it wasn’t until 1940 when a predecessor body of the National Council of Churches promoted extending the celebration to a number of churches around the world. Then, the practice became widespread.
World Communion Sunday is a time to note that, even though we don’t agree with each other, even though we come from very different places and perspectives, we are all coming to the Table, brothers and Sisters in Christ around the table, breaking bread together.
The LeRoy United Methodist Church is “leaving the building”,
Sunday morning, Oct. 20th, to work in the community, and are
looking for work projects. They hope to help homebound
seniors, single moms, anyone at all who would benefit from
help on projects like washing windows, cleaning gutters, minor home repair, planting
flower bulbs, yard work and more.
They are reaching out to other local churches for names of those who may want this
type of help on their workday, Please contact the FUPC church office (962-5011) with
suggested names, along with their contact information, so that they can be reached by
phone or in person.
All men (7th grade and up can join dads) are invited to a Men’s
Breakfast on Sunday, October 6th, at 8:00 a.m. before worship.
A message will begin around 8:15 a.m. Hope to see you
there...all churches are welcome! SUNDAY

Illustrated Dictionary of Bible Life and Times -
Reader's Digest reference book
Occasionally, weekly scripture readings reference peculiar Old
Testament dietary restrictions or customs. Though typically cursory
to core spiritual lessons, such peculiarities can be baffling. From
A to Z, the Illustrated Dictionary of Bible Life & Times highlights
objects/practices pertinent to ancient daily life.
From food, clothing, occupations, plants and livestock to leisure/
games, education, trade, and travel--this Reader's Digest reference
has it covered. Relevant questions to the times are addressed: Why
were newborns rubbed in salt? How did a tent represent wealth?
If directionally challenged, good luck with this one--why does north
mean left in Hebrew?
This unique reference book is displayed on the media shelf
by the DVDs in our church library.
Nov. 6 ~ 6 p.m.
Autumn is a time to look forward to enjoying some warm, comforting soups and stews; a perfect time to get together with good food, good friends and good conversation.
You’ll definitely want to join us for a this meal, furnished by the Worship & Music Committee, on Nov. 6th at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall. We hope you will come and enjoy a delicious fall evening!
