Pastor Tim Doty

July 2017

Many Christians, at some time in their lives, resolve to read the

entire Bible straight through. A few succeed. But many who try to do this

get bogged down in the “boring parts” (you know, Leviticus or 1 Chroni-

cles) and don’t finish. So here is a plan for reading through the entire

Bible. I have shared this with many of you in various classes, but now

here it is for everyone.

First, choose a particular Bible to use. In this example I will use

a pew Bible from the Sanctuary. In this Bible the Old Testament is 714

pages and the New Testament is 206 pages. So divide the OT into two

parts. In this example the first part would begin with the book of Genesis

on page 1, the second with Nehemiah on page 356. Place a bookmark

at the beginning of Genesis, another at the beginning of Nehemiah and a

third at the beginning of Matthew. Each day open to your first bookmark

and begin with the first chapter heading closest to the top of the left

hand page. Read until you have to turn one page. Stop reading when

you come to the next chapter. Do this with each of the three sections.

For example, if your first bookmark were at page 28-29, you would begin

reading with Genesis 36, the first chapter heading to appear on page 28.

You would read chapters 36 and 37 and then stop reading in the second

column on page 30, at the beginning of chapter 38. The next day you

would resume with chapter 38 on page 30 and read through chapter 39,

at the top of page 32. By doing this each day with each of the three sec-

tions you would be reading about six pages per day. If you find yourself in

a rough spot, say the middle of Leviticus, you would know that you only

had to read a couple of chapters, then you could move on to something

else which (one hopes) would be more interesting. This provides variety

and helps prevent boredom.

This isn’t one of those “read it in a year” schemes. If, for what-

ever reasons, you miss one or more days, there is no catching up to do.

Just pick up wherever you left off. There is no

particular schedule to keep. Using this method

regularly one can actually finish the whole

Bible in about a year. Give it a try! It is a very

satisfying feeling to know that you have read

through the entire Bible at least once. And you

may like it enough to do it again.

Church softball games will be played at 3 p.m. every Sunday in July at the school ball fields. Must be entering high school this fall to play.

COME CHEER ON YOUR FUPC TEAM!

Why not join us on a hot summer day in the cool of the fellowship hall for a potluck brunch! On July 30th

a brunch potluck will be held after the worship service. Egg dishes will be furnished; please bring fruit, donuts, coffee cakes etc. to share.

Plan to join us for a gondola luncheon after the worship service on August 11th with an ice cream social to follow! Gondolas and ice cream will be furnished; please bring toppings, cookies, brownies etc.

Construction volunteers are needed most Saturdays

through the end of the year. Please consider signing up

at www.habitatmclean.org (a one time liability waiver to

be signed is also available there as well as at the Church).

Individuals/groups are also needed to furnish snacks

on designated dates (call the church office or sign up at

Dee Henderson and Terri Blackstock are my two favorite Christian

authors. Their books always have intriguing characters and

mysterious plots.

Take a glass of lemonade and find your favorite reading spot. You

Church Address Directory

We are still in the process of updating a member and active non-member

address/phone directory and have finally completed the preliminary copy

for everyone to review.

The first draft copy is located at the west church entrance for you to make any additions

or corrections. You may also email [email protected] or call the church office

(962-5011) to make sure we have the right address, phone number and/or email.

At the same time we would like to make sure we have anniversaries and birthdays of all of

our church family.

Our end goal is to provide the finished directory to everyone who would like either a

paper or electronic copy. As mentioned before, If you would prefer NOT to have your

information included in this directory, please let us know.

ENDLESS BUZZ ENDLESS BUZZ ENDLESS BUZZ Kerri Cordray

I believe God speaks His message of Truth and love through the big moments,

often called miracles and celebrations, and in the still small moments. Last

month we had a “ ” explosion at our summer Vacation Bible School!

We were blessed to host over 100 kids for an entire week of praising, learning,

and discovering the Lord’s love, power and grace. It was magnificent to

witness and hear these kids’ reports of how God was working in their lives

through this experience! God’s team received the “ ” through Jesus,

yeah!

God is preparing to do more exciting work through 32 students’ hearts at our

upcoming camp and mission trip. The Great Escape for youth in grades 5-8,

will depart on Monday, July 10 and return on July 15. The theme for the week

is “Jail Break” focusing on God’s power and the freedom we have through our

faith and saving relationship with Jesus Christ. Together we will hear exciting

stories of rescue, power, and provision given to biblical leaders such as Peter

and Paul. God’s word tells us that we are all held captive by sin, but the Truth

of God’s Word will set us free.

“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,

and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

On Sunday, July 23, we have a group of 13, High School students and adults,

who will travel to Bullock Creek, Michigan, eager to respond to the call to

serve through this mission opportunity. Our theme for the week is “The Road”

as we are invited to discover the road to encounter Jesus (theme taken from the

Road to Emmaus, Luke 24:13-49). While on our mission trip “The Road” will

become clearer as our daily biblical purpose unfolds:

“From Home to Here” (Luke 24:13)

“From Disappointment to Doubt” (Luke 24:13-24)

“From Doubt to Hope” (Luke 24:25-27)

“From Hope to Hunger” (Luke 24:28-35)

“From Hunger to Joy” (Luke 24: 36-48)

“From Joy to Home” (Luke 24:49)

We will travel “The Road” in our study of Scripture as we learn about the

followers of Jesus whose journey took them from a place of disappointment,

moments of doubt, the excitement of hope, to a place of feeding others, to the

joy of knowing Jesus, and back on “The Road” equipped with the Holy Spirit.

God has been at a work through these experiences for our children and teens

for a long time.

Don’t forget to register for fall!

Applications are available on our website

(www.leroypresbyterian.info) or pick up at church.

I am grateful for the “ ” of His team, the freedom that comes from

“The Jail Break” and discovery of recognizing Jesus on the “The Road”. What

could be better?!

Please pray for our awesome group of teens preparing for our upcoming trips to

experience the fullness of God’s grace, the richness of His love and the gift of

eternal life found in Jesus. Amen.

A total of 53 students (grades K-4), 51 student leaders (grades

5-12) and 8 adult leaders enjoyed another very successful VBS

the week of Jun 5-9th. A special thanks to everyone who

helped make it possible to lead God’s team to VICTORY!

Our mission for the week benefited “Filter of Hope”. By collecting

$480, 12 families will be provided up to 10 years of clean water!

Pastor Tim and Kerri tested out drinking some very dirty water after

running it through a sample filter and pronounced the water fine!
