Learning Behavior of Control Group
Environment: Face to face setting
Course: Computer Fundamental
Participants: Students of SEW ( ), CSE ( )- two groups
Class Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Data Collection
• Video of the classes, • Observation, & • Transcript of student interaction
Stages of Learning
Stage 1.Students responded to the questions given by
the course teacher
Activities: Individual thinking, brainstorming, connecting to the previous knowledge and understanding

Stage 2.Students were asked to write problems- what
they could not understand
Activities: Pair interaction, Individual thinking, sharing of experience/thoughts, write problem on cards

Stage 3.Students were asked to do sorting of the
individual problems and find types of problems
Activities: Arranging cards and finding problem categories, look into individual perspectives and overall learning situation

Stage 4.Students were asked to solve the identified
problems in groups (7/8 groups, 4/5 in each group) and write on a poster paper.
Activities: Discuss problem with peers, sharing past experience/ideas?, provide
solution, give justification, seek teacher’s help, build common understanding
Stages of LearningStage 5.Each of the groups were asked to present the group
work.Activities: -Present and explain solutions to the
problem, -Interactions between selected students (group
leader & individual student), -answer question to the individual student,
scaffolding?-seek teacher’s support(Need to transcribe interaction between students)
Finally,- There is Consensus among the students and
-Build Common Understanding(in presence of the course teacher)
AchievementUnderstanding solutions to the problems and
acquiring skills may lead to:
Achievement of the course goals(set by the course teacher)
Observed Teacher’s Role
- Facilitate the pair interaction, - Group discussion- Supported classification of problems- Interaction during presentation (question
answer)- Helped to increase confidence level of the
students
Interpretation
--The model presented here is quite similar to the ‘Peer Instruction/Tutoring model’ given by Harvard University Professor Eric Mazur (Mazur, 1997)
- Student interaction behavior/ pattern may be discussed with the social constructivist & peer learning theories given by Vygotsky (1978), Topping, Johnson & Johnson (1998) and Others
