Message from the

FounderI grew up in the remote mountain village of Asrang in the Gorkha district of Nepal and was fortunate enough to be able to attend Amrit Science Campus in Kathmandu. Like any average Nepali of my age, I thought that I would work for the government after graduation. With a graduate degree in geology, I was likely to have a career as a geologist or a mining engineer. However, things changed when I realized that I had no greater passion than travelling and adventure. Even as a kid, I actually enjoyed walking 8 km every Day to school and back! I took pleasure in the amazing views of terraced farms, waterfalls, warm smile of a passerby and the constant company of the mighty Himalayas.

So, in 1992 I established Himalayan Glacier to provide authentic travel experience to fellow adventure seekers like myself. I had no experience in the tourism service sector, but with sheer passion as my motivation and an equally enthusiastic team, Himalayan Glacier is now among the premium travel operators in South Asia.

I am also determined to lead the tourism industry in sustainable tourism and community development initiatives. Our programs are designed to provide quality services and exceptional experiences for our clients while ensuring these experiences are available for generations to come. Our company is structured to provide career and educational opportunities for our staff while developing and supporting programs that give back to our communities.

I believe the kind of service provided here at Himalayan Glacier is summed up in the famous travellers’ saying, “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.” With customer care and responsible tourism as our motto, I believe Himalayan Glacier will reach new heights in global tourism. Nothing is impossible if we dare to dream big.

you can choose your trip based on the places you want to go and things you want to do. We provide treks, climbing/moun-

tain expeditions, cultural tours and ad-venture holidays in nepal, tibet, bhutan, india and china. Please visit our website http://www.himalayanglacier.com/ to secure the trip of your choice.

Another important thing for you to con-sider is your fitness level and the best time for taking a trip of your choice. Our trekking trips are designed to be acces-sible to all who are in good health and enjoy the outdoors, but fitness levels are important and you should consider care-fully which trip is right for you.

Trek GradingWe have graded each trek based on the level of terrain, length of walks and climate. Treks graded easy and moderate would be suitable for almost anyone with a lust for adventure while treks graded diffi cult and/or strenuous requires a certain amount of experience and physical health.

EasyExperience is not necessary for tak-ing part in an easy trek, anyone fi t and healthy enough to walk for 4-6 hours a Day for 3-6 Days can manage easy treks. These treks can reach up to an altitude of 3500m in generally good weather and on well-maintained paths.

ModerateYou are likely to walk for 6-7 hours each Day for around 1-2 weeks over steep, hilly terrain on usually rough trails but no real extremes of weather. Moderate trails entail reaching up to 4500m with daily ascents of around 500m. You are there-fore required to have a positive attitude and be physically fi t. Previous hiking or camping experience is preferable.

Diffi cultIn diffi cult treks you are likely to walk for 6-7 hours, cross steep hilly terrain and occasional high passes of up to 5500m. You are likely to be in a remote environment with extreme weather on some Days. You will also be fac-ing high-altitude air with low levels of oxygen. Therefore, previous trekking experience, physi-cal fi tness and positive attitude are essential.

StrenuousYou will be walking for 6-7 hours per Day or longer for up to 2 weeks on altitude often ex-ceeding 4000m with some Days spend trek-king above 5500m. Strenuous treks involve tough ascents and descents, at times on mi-nor trails and diffi cult terrain including snow or risky, dangerous sections of loose terrain. You are therefore required to have high level of physical fi tness along with optimal level of experience and positive attitude.

Page 9: LEADING ADVENTURE & TOUR OPERATORSo, in 1992 I established Himalayan Glacier to provide authentic travel experience to fellow adventure seekers like myself. I had no experience in

WhAt the GrAdeS SiGnifyIf the trip is graded 1A, it’s an easy climb generally on easy angled snow-slopes, with no objective dangers. The higher the trip grade, the more demanding the trip becomes both in terms of technical-ity as well as fi tness and skill. The trip graded 5E means it’s the toughest climb with steep snow slopes, exposed ridges and crevassed sections requiring a high level of fi tness, previous high-mountain experience and a high degree of climbing skill supported by full mountaineering equipment and logistics.

fitneSS LeveLAlthough the climbing expeditions do not require you to be an athlete, you

must be fi t and healthy before embark-ing on the expedition. To roughly assess your fi tness level, see that you walk can easily walk about 8 km gaining a height of 600m/2,000ft with a 10kg rucksack in about 2-1/2 hours or less. Note that you should be able to follow the regime for several consecutive Days.

riGht time tO tAke A triPCultural tours and adventure holidays are fi ne for any time of the season, but if trekking and climbing is on your agenda, then autumn(Sept. to Dec.) and spring (March to May) would be better suited for you as these two seasons become ideal with warm weather and outstanding views of the surrounding landscape.

However, if you wish to avoid the crowd and make genuine contact with the locals on your journey, then winter and summer seasons could also work for you. It is wet in summer and very cold in winter, but if you are a keen botanist and enjoy varieties of fl ora and fauna, then summer would work just fi ne.

Our guide was: a walking GPS, concierge service, our food advisor, a constant natural history/ cultural educator, a musician, our “medic”, and most importantly, a friend.

ANN P. HENDRICKSON, USA

Namaste! Namaste! These were the first words we heard emerging from the customs shuffle. Our guide, Basu, was eagerly waving garlands of marigolds behind a sign with our name. I sized him up: Five feet tall, grinning ear to ear, eyes that belied a kind, gentle soul, and an unflappable spirit. Trust and friendship were instant. We were whisked away through traffic-jammed alleyways for our trek briefing at HGT headquarters. Our Himalayan adventure had begun!

One quickly becomes intoxicated with sensory overload in this incredible city, Kathmandu. Three Days was barely enough to scratch the surface of this endlessly fascinating cultural maze of a place. I long to return to Bouddhan-ath, to once again feel the prayer wheels spin under my fingers, light a butter lamp, and cir-cumnavigate on a prayer flag-decked street.

After a night in picturesque Pokhara, we drove to Naya Pul. the starting point of our Annapurna trek! Here, throngs of trekkers, guides, and por-ters were hurriedly packing and double-checking gear. A short hike and we were in Birethanti, registering with the Nepal Trekking Information Management System, (designed to monitor the Conservancy area.)

There are multiple routes and treks one can

chose in the Himalayas; one available for any budget, schedule, and fitness level. We chose the Annapurna Sanc-tuary route as we wanted to explore the ethnic culture of the communities, the flora and fauna of the sub tropi-cal forests, and alpine regions, while maintaining a constant panoramic view. Our choice for an outfitter was easy, Himalayan Glacier Trekking a highly rated company, has a US representa-tive: Tony Monaco, a Carolina Mountain Club member in Charlotte, NC. Our itinerary was established according to our trekking ideas and our pre and post trek plans. One couldn’t ask for a better executed trip.

Before you dismiss considering a trek of this nature, consider one of the most intriguing elements! The people one meets along the way! Once your trek-king is done for the Day, people gather in a communal dining room. One’s personal space dissolves. Lodging is inexpensive. The food is satisfying, and the staff very gracious and welcoming. We sat for hours in the early evening, chatting about the Days trek, journaling, eating, drinking, and playing cards.

We found that having a guide enriched our experience immensely. Our guide was: a walking GPS, concierge service, our food advisor, a constant natural his-tory/cultural educator, a musician, our “medic”, and most importantly, a friend.

The trail led us through the Modi Khola valley, filled with rice paddies, fields of quinoa, turmeric, corn, squash, and cabbages. We shared the path with trains of mules transporting goods between villages, water buffalo, goats, porters, and fellow trekkers. Passing through dense bamboo and hardwood forests, we arrived at Ghorepani. Our room had a “5 Star view” of Mach-hapuchre, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and the Annapurnas! At 4:30 a.m., wearing

headlamps and woolies, we climbed 2,000 feet to Poon Hill for one of the most spectacular sunrise viewpoints in the HimalayanRange.

A steep descent; a steep ascent, and we arrived in beautiful Chhomrong, located on the lap of the Annapurna massive. We lay in bed with the moon shining on Machhapuchre. We cracked open the window and breathed the frosty air. It just might be as close to heaven as we will ever get. The stars were floating just a fingertip away.

In two weeks we viewed a lifetime of waterfalls. The Nepalese don’t bother to name them as there are so many. Most of the peaks aren’t named either; if they aren’t snow covered year round they are not “worthy” of a name! As the vegetation disappears, our solitude in the wilderness became more obvious. Our attention remained riveted on the views of majestic Machhapuchre. It is the one virginal mountain in the Himalayan range; the Nepalese government (fortunately) refuses to allow climbing there.

The trail between MBC and ABC is a strenuous path that leads into the fro-zen heart of the Annapurna range. This is an unparalleled mountain experience with unparalleled views. We arrived at Base Camp just before the fog rolled in shrouding everything. We spent the evening sipping bowls of garlic soup and gorging the best pizza we have ever eaten.

Before dawn we trekked out for a posi-tion to wait for dawn to sear the tips of the frozen peaks. Red and gold com-menced to etch across the amphitheater of rock and ice. The staggering scale of the mountains was all but overwhelm-ing. Lost in our thoughts, we silently hung a prayer flag, and then slowly, savoring the moment, turned toward lower elevation.

After 15 months the memories are vivid. The yearning remains. We are currently partnering again with HGT to create another Himalayan adventure!

The glacier looks like a jewel box hanging on the neck of the mountain, hence the name Ama Dablam, literally meaning ‘The Mother’s Jewel Box’. to me felt the most diffi cult of the whole trip--and I was not alone in perceiving it that way.

The whole expedition was in fact quite physically demanding: from its fi rst Days, when we had to negotiate very steep slopes and signifi cant elevation gains, to the very end

when we covered long distances while dealing with exhaustion. I nevertheless feel grateful that HGT chose to get us to Kothe from Lukla on a less popular path, despite the feeling at that time that it was defi nitely not an easy trip: when we returned to Lukla (from Kothe) via Thuli Kharka, I realized how much

IONUT PRODAN, ROMANIAIn October 2011, I did the 19-Day Mera Peak Climbing with Himalayan Glacier Trekking (HGT), with Ghadul Tamang as main guide. This was my second expedition with HGT, and it beganright after their 17-Day Annapurna Circuit, which had been an overall success. I am pleased to say that this second trip more than met my expectations well.

While not technical, this expedition was more than a typical trekking trip, as it involved a few Days of walking on glacier. This meant that we had to wear crampons and be attached with ropes a good part of that time. Otherwise, reaching Mera was pretty straightforward, provided that one was in good shape and reasonably acclimatized.

The summit Day was very long and exhausting; in the end we clocked 24 hours in a row of trekking on diffi cult terrain. Descending from Mera to Khare that same Day, after a long and tough night (and with only a brief stop at the high camp, on the way back), took a toll on all of us. It was this Day following the summit that

Going from Lukla to Mera I came across no roads, and often used only narrowmountain paths, on which trekkers and locals alike carry their burdens and stories.

Page 36: LEADING ADVENTURE & TOUR OPERATORSo, in 1992 I established Himalayan Glacier to provide authentic travel experience to fellow adventure seekers like myself. I had no experience in

more diffi cult it must have been going up the same way, on those never ending steep slopes.

I would like to emphasize here that preparation for this trip should not be taken lightly, no matter how experienced a trekker one could see oneself; just because Mera is not considered technical, it does not make summiting it accessible to just anybody. Quite a few people who trekked along with us could not reach the top, while others had a very diffi cult time doing it.

Ghadul deserves special praise, for he was truly instrumental to the success of this trip (all his clients reached the targeted Mera Central Peak, and made it back safely). First of all, he had a good understanding of what his mission was, and what it took to make things happen. Always with good humor and nature, he

could manage with ease both clients and staff. He had individually picked his men from people whom he knew and trusted, and he appeared to be mindful of their health and general well-being.

During our trek, he always knew what the best spot to spend the next night was, and how to make sure we would get it; whether it was through his network of friends in strategic positions along the way, or simply by sending one of his men early ahead

of everybody else, to reserve the best camping site.

In my opinion, Ghadul did much more than what was expected of him, to ensure that his clients reached their goals. He made sure that

everybody had the right climbing equipment, including by going with clients to a specialty shop in Kathmandu to buy crampons, ice axes, and rope. He also took care, before we left for Lukla, that we all rented down jackets and sleeping bags of the best quality the shop he was doing business with could offer (the cost of this rental was covered by HGT). While on the glacier, he personally installed the crampons and harness for every one of us, double checking like a responsible

parent that everything was in good order. During the summit night in particular, this was not an easy task, given the combination of dark, extreme cold, and strong wind. He even helped put our gloves on, and preferred not to wear his--to be able to faster and more reliably attend to our needs.

The Mera Peak expedition introduced me to a part of the Himalaya less developed than what I could see around the Annapurna mountain range. Either came with its own beauty and wonderful people. Going from Lukla to Mera I came across no roads, and often used only narrow mountain paths, on which trekkers and locals alike carry their burdens and stories. I experienced less comfort, endured more frigid nights, and got humbled by the mountain again and again. I just loved it, and can’t wait to go to the Everest region again.

introductionThe Kailash tour traditionally has had a deep spiritual significance to Hindus and Buddhists, some of whom take a yearly pilgrimage to the mountain site and encircle it for the purpose of good luck. Its natural beauty and religious and cultural significance has made Mount Kailash not only one of the holiest places for these devout followers, but also a great place of interest for trekkers who want to walk the Kora, the sacred circuit around Mt. Kailash. If you are lucky, you might even see some devout pilgrims encircling the Kora in the most difficult way of all—by doing full-body prostrations the entire length!

In summary: 11nights in Tibet, overland from Lhasa to Kathmandu stopping at Everest base camp at 5200m altitude, 10 nights in Nepal, and then fl ying to Bhutan for 8 nights and overland crossing to West Bengal+Sikkim for the remaining 6 nights.

Tibet: It was a great experience. We had such fond memories of Potala Palace, Sera, Drepung, Sakya, and Shalu monasteries. Also, we were very lucky to be in the Himalayas on a clear Day without a single cloud. Even the guide was astonished and he said people seldom see this. We took lots of pictures of the whole Himalayan range as seen from Tibet as well as at the base camp. Accommodation outside Lhasa, Gyantse, Shigatse is basic but acceptable for a one-night stay. We decided not to stay at Namtso lakeside guesthouse as it was already cold and instead we made the trip in one Day from Lhasa to Namtso Lake and stayed an extra night in Lhasa, which was a very

good decision on our part. Also, we did not stay at Everest View Hotel in Rongbuk and opted to stay in Tingri. We will never forget the journey from Tingri where the altitude dropped from as high as 5000m to close to1500m in Zhangmu! And then fi nally we crossed the friendship bridge on foot into Nepal. We then said good-bye to our excellent guide in Tibet and met our next crew in Nepal. The best hotel in Tibet was no doubt Kyichu for the location in Lhasa as well as amenities.

TRIP TO TIBET, NEPAL, BHUTAN AND WEST BENGAL

JOAO TOME, PORTUGAL

When we decided to embark on this trip, I searched on the internet for a good local travel agency to prepare this trip for us. I always organize my trips this way, on the many journeys we have done so far around the globe and will continue to do so. Local agents are far better in comparison to Western-based agencies, which are mere intermediaries. Local agencies have better knowledge of the situation, give much better on the spot support if needed, and above all we can get a better deal. After some search in early 2011, Himalayan Glacier appeared to be the best choice, and I am glad I made this decision!

nePALKathmandu, Chitwan National Park and Pokhara were our stops in Nepal. We will never forget the road conditions in Nepal and the brave drivers they have in this country! For a 180 km journey from the two biggest cities Kathmandu and Pokhara, you will need about 7 hours which goes along quite dangerous roads fl anked by high slopes and precipices.

Kathmandu is a mythic city with lots of charm and exquisite places to see such as the “Monkey Temple”, Swayambu Nath and Boudhanath stupas. We thought the best site was Bhaktapur with its palaces, temples, and Durbar Square, and we regret for not having stayed there for even one night. Chitwan National Park has good facilities and it is an adventure to get there on a small boat and muddy roads. Rhinos and the safari elephant ride is the highlight of the park. Next, we went to Pokhara and a trip to Sarangkot to see the Himalayas

at sunrise. We were not so lucky the Day we went there, as it was foggy. Phewa Lake and the Peace stupa as well at the many good restaurants complemented our three-night stay in Pokhara.

The best hotel was no doubt the recently opened Temple Tea resort in Pokhara. In Kathmandu the Hotel Shanker has the charm of an old hotel and good rooms.

bhutAnFlying to Paro from Kathmandu with Druk Air and seating on the left side of the plane provided another exciting part of the journey. The Himalayan range with its highest peaks including Everest were clearly on sight and then the landing at Paro was similar to that of an adventure movie considering the maneuvers the pilot needs to make in order to land at this international airport with no automatic land guidance system. It all depends on the expertise of the pilots, the

good weather and then …welcome to the land of the Dragon! We had an excellent guide and driver waiting for us to be our escorts for the full trip of 9 Days up until the Bhutanese Indian border at Phuentsholing. The only country in the world where cigarettes and tobacco are forbidden to sell, (to the despair of my wife) smoking is strictly forbidden in public places. It is also known as the happiest country in the world according to the Gross Happiness Index! We arrived to Paro on the last Day of the royal wedding celebrations, and what an amazing show it was! The places we visited in Bhutan are full of ancient history and stunning sceneries! All the Dzongs are worth visiting particularly in Trongsa, Punakha and Rinpung dzong in Paro. We had the chance to seat with the monks in Trongsa Dzong Monastery and witness for a full hour one of the daily prayers. To our surprise Bhutan hadthe best hotels of the entire journey with special mention to Tashi Namgay Resort in Paro, Yangkhil resort in Trongsa (magnifi cent view over Trongsa Dzong!), and Punakha Meri Puensum resort overlooking immense rice terrace fi elds and the valleys and river. All hotles had free Wi-Fi, in a country where TV did not exist up until 1999! The divine madman Drukpa Kunley is another interesting side of the story of Bhutan, which explains why so many houses and restaurants have phallic symbols at the entrances protecting the premises.A trip to Bhutan is incomplete without trekking the step hills to the Takstang Tigers nest Monastery situated at 3200m altitude near Paro, meaning a quick and very demanding ascent and descent from 500m below. Well worth going to the top!Being Portuguese I was happy to know that two Portuguese Jesuits in the xVI century were the fi rst European and perhaps foreigners to visit this land!

Sikkim And WeSt benGALAt the border between Bhutan and India, we left our excellent guide and driver from Bhutan and another pair

waited to escort us on the last 7 Days of our journey through the Himalayan Region. Next stops are Darjeeling, Gangtok and Kalimpong! While there, we had stunning sceneries with high mountains and tea fi elds. Due to the road conditions and recent earthquake, some of the roads we traveled had some problems and perhaps the sequence of places visited was not the best, but this needs to be addressed for future trips in this part of the world where things change very quickly. Many things were left for us to see around Darjeeling (the road from Siliguri to Darjeeling for example). In this part a three-night stay is better than two so as to enable riding for a much longer distance the incredible steam train line along the tea fi elds. The zoo at Darjeeling and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is a must see! Rumtek Monastery on the way to Gangtok is better seen either on the way to Gangtok while leaving Sikkim. Strangely enough, when one enters Sikkim we need to obtain a special entry permit at the bridge separated from mainland India. A photo is needed as well as fi lling out a form. Even our passports are stamped with an entry Sikkim stamp even though we are still in India.

Thank you Himalayan Glacier for making our trip in the mighty Himalayas an amazing one!
