Jon has lived in Bolsover District for 34 years, the past 24 in Carr Vale. A Unite the Union and Socialist Party member, he has been involved in and helped organise many campaigns for better facilities and against cuts.
“Councils can’t maintain services by selling off public land and facilities,” says Jon. “As a councillor, I would oppose big business taking over Bolsover town centre on land that should benefit the local community.”

TRADE UNIONISTS AND SOCIALISTS AGAINST CUTS

DALE Bolsover South
How much more hardship does the government want us to suffer? Pensioners choosing between eating and heating. Children hungry at
school. Workers facing redundancy and job insecurity. Pay falling way
behind rocketing bills.
But it’s still bonus time for bankers. Big companies still dodge
billions of pounds tax. The gulf between the super-rich and the rest of
us has never been wider.
The government and their supporters running the county council
want even more cuts. They want their business friends to run vital
public services for profit, including the NHS. Job, pay and service
cuts will follow.
What’s the alternative? Labour councils have been swinging the axe too while UKIP are
saying they would be prepared to enter a coalition with the Tories.
Sheffield’s Labour council is closing family centres, libraries, youth services and the Don
Valley stadium. Where will a future Jessica Ennis train? Labour-run Nottingham City has cut day
centres for the elderly and children’s services. Labour in Derby City is carrying out the worst
attack on housing support in the country. Being prepared to join the butchers in this government in a coalition spells out
clearly that UKIP are no real alternative - just another party of big business.
TUSC councillors would oppose all cuts. Clay Cross Council defied the Tory government 40 years ago, refusing to
increase rents. Socialist councillors with the same fighting spirit are what we need today.
TUSC councillors will propose a budget based on what is needed to provide and maintain proper services. We would
help build united campaigns across local communities and trade unions to force the government to give the council
enough money for the services we need.
We are fighting for a democratic socialist world to meet the needs of the millions, not the millionaires.
The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition has the backing of the RMT transport union, leading trade unionists, the Socialist Party and other campaigners. We are standing in these elections to give an alternative to all the other parties that support this rotten capitalist system.
