FRIDAY STEM CHALLENGE! With just a few supplies, kids can build a catapult that really launches.
Getting Ready
• 7 craft sticks (jumbo sized works best but regular old sticks will do too)
• 4 rubber bands
• A small lid
• Hot glue gun – or sticky tape, or glue (let it dry overnight)
• A handful of lollies, pom poms or LEGO pieces, or scrunched up balls of paper. Building Catapults The catapults are surprisingly simple to build! We stacked them on top of each other and tightly bound both ends with a rubber band. Next, we placed two sticks on top of each other and wrapped a rubber band around one end to squeeze them together.
We pried apart the unwrapped end and slid our bundle of five sticks as close to the hinged end as it would go. Then we wrapped the final band criss cross around them to secure the two parts in place.
After our hot glue gun warmed, we squeezed a pea size amount on the end of the top popsicle stick and pressed our lid in place to make a launch pad. Or you could use sticky tape, or glue.
3, 2, 1, Launch! Safety rules:
• The catapult should be launched outside. Check with Mum and Dad. • The objects must be aimed away from people. • All objects must be cleaned up at the end of the activity.
