Learning Activities 2nd and 3rd Grade
Suggested Learning Activities for 2nd and 3rd Grade students during the COVID-19 school closure.
Seattle Public Schools is committed to making its online information accessible and usable to all people, regardless of ability or technology. Meeting web accessibility guidelines and standards is an ongoing process that we are consistently working to improve.
While Seattle Public Schools endeavors to only post documents optimized for accessibility, due to the nature and complexity of some documents, an accessible version of the document may not be available. In these limited circumstances, the District will provide equally effective alternate access.
Due to the COVID-19 closure, teachers were asked to provide packets of home activities. This is not intended to take the place of regular classroom instruction but will help supplement student learning and provide opportunities for student learning while they are absent from school. Assignments are not required or graded. Because of the unprecedented nature of this health crisis and the District’s swift closure, some home activities may not be accessible.
If you have difficulty accessing the material or have any questions, please contact your student’s teacher.

[English] Dear Students and Families: In the following learning activities, you will find materials to practice skills from English Language Arts, Science, Math and Physical Education for grade levels 2 and 3. The activities in this week’s learning packet are aligned to grade-level content and broadcasted educational programming on SPS TV, social media, and our website. These materials serve as supplemental and extensions to your child’s learning and do not replace classroom instruction. They are not required nor will be graded, and students should go through each page at their own pace. Please note that based on staff availability and health, broadcast schedule is subject to change.

6/21 Pick 5 different muscles to stretch. Hold each stretch for 20 seconds.
Purpose: This calendar encourages families to become more physically active and to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Each day, students are asked to complete a different activity with a family member (or with adult supervision).
Directions: After a student completes a day’s activity, adults make a check mark and initial in the space provided. Each week, you can miss one day (activity). If this happens, put an “X” in the space provided for a check mark (do not initial).

Dear 2nd Grade Families, Well, we’ve reached the end of the school year. Thank you for being such a great partner in your student’s education. education. Please keep playing all the games and thinking about all the activities found in the learning packets over the summer. Think about signing up for summer school so that we will all have a strong start in the new school year. For this week’s packet and video lesson, our focus is on solving mathematical questions around money. Counting on, counting up, and skip counting are important parts of this skill. Encourage students to always be counting. This week we continue to include Choral Counting activities so families can count out loud together.
Our new game this week is ‘Target Number’. The game is quick and fun, encourages creativity and mathematical thinking and adjusts to the abilities of each players.

Target Number – counting coins edition Materials: Cut out money Players: Best with 2 players. Object: The goal of the game is to make the target number using dollar bills and coins. How to Play: One player makes the target. They choose any amount of money – under $3.00 – and write it down. Think about signing up for summer school so that we will all have a strong start in the new school year. For this week’s packet and video lesson, our focus is on time. Some of the most common questions in our lives are around time – ‘How much longer?’, ‘When are we leaving?’, ‘Is it time yet?’. Time is counted in a different base than we are used to – base 60. That means we count to 60 before turning over to a new unit – 60 seconds makes 1 minute, and 60 minutes makes 1 hour - in the same way that 10 ones make a ten. 60 is a cool number because we can make it by skip counting by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30! It is like a Lego model that can be built with many different pieces.
Our new game this week is ‘Target Number’. The game is quick and fun, encourages creativity and mathematical thinking and adjusts to the abilities of each players.

Building a new World I’m playing a lot of board games lately. I like this game because I get to build a new society.
I have to work around the mountains and the canyon in the center – can’t build there. I can draw forests, villages, or farms. Every farm must have at least one water source.
Every section I draw has to be a rectangle with at least four grid squares inside. That is the size of 1 tile. Monsters will live in any spaces left over.
My score is the sum of the areas of the sections I draw. The monster villages don’t count.
