Family Reading Activities

Adult Family Members/GuardiansAsk your child:

• “What do you think about what you just read?”• “What new information did you learn?”• “What do you already know about this topic?”

For example: Before reading about polar bears you might ask, “What do you know about polar bears?”

Students• After you read, share what you learned with someone at home. • Tell someone at home what you wondered about as you read. • After you read, talk to someone at home about the important

ideas in the book. Why are those ideas important?

Reading Conversations– When talking about reading at home, use the language most comfortable for your family.

To Support Reading Comprehension - Students who have difficulty reading on their own should be encouraged to:

• Listen to books and follow along as someone else reads • Practice reading “just-right” books on their own

Talking about books and sharing ideas together at home is an important part of reading for students. Below are suggestions for engaging in reading conversations with your child that will help them better understand what they read.

Dear 2nd Grade Families, Well, we’ve reached the end of the school year. Thank you for being such a great partner in your student’s education. education. Please keep playing all the games and thinking about all the activities found in the learning packets over the summer. Think about signing up for summer school so that we will all have a strong start in the new school year. For this week’s packet and video lesson, our focus is on solving mathematical questions around money. Counting on, counting up, and skip counting are important parts of this skill. Encourage students to always be counting. This week we continue to include Choral Counting activities so families can count out loud together.

Our new game this week is ‘Target Number’. The game is quick and fun, encourages creativity and mathematical thinking and adjusts to the abilities of each players.

Special Shout-Out to Math For Love -https://mathforlove.com/ - for another great game.

Stay well everyone.

Target Number – counting coins edition Materials: Cut out money Players: Best with 2 players. Object: The goal of the game is to make the target number using dollar bills and coins. How to Play: One player makes the target. They choose any amount of money – under $3.00 – and write it down. Another player tries to ‘hit’ the target by choosing bills and coins that add up to the target amount. players take turns making the target and trying to hit the target. If there is a third player, they can attempt to hit the target using fewer bills and coins

Example Game Player 1 writes down a target of $1.17 Player 2 Chooses 4 quarters, 1 dime, and 7 pennies – and Hits the Target! – using 12 coins Player 3 chooses 1-dollar bill, 1 dime, 1 nickel, and 2 pennies also hitting the Target! – using 4 coins and 1 bill.

Which One Doesn’t Belong? Look at this set of four pictures. Decide which one doesn’t belong with the other three. Describe your thinking using math words. There are many ways to think about each one!

Which letter do you think doesn’t belong? Share your reason?

Challenge Find reasons why each of the pictures might not belong with the other three.

Share Explain your thinking to someone else. Do they have different reasons why one doesn't belong?

Mobile Math This mobile has two parts that balance – Each part has EQUAL weight.

One side has 1 trapezoid and 1 heart

The other side is an equal weight. It has 3 hearts.

The key tells us that each heart is worth 2 units of weight.

1. What does each side of the mobile weight?

2. What is the total weight of the mobile (both sides)?

3. How much does the Trapezoid weigh?

Shopping Groceries can be very expensive. Ask if you can go to the store the next time a family member buys groceries. All the goods are very distracting but here are some things you can do to stay focused on costs.

1. Look at the shelves when picking out items.

2. Notice that some things have more than one price – cartons of eggs for example

3. Write down some of the prices.

4. When you get home – add up some of the prices

Compare Ask to go to the store with your family. Compare the prices of the items you see there. Compare two things that seem the same. Which one is less? How much less? Why is that? Counting up Gather people in your home to count with you. Starting at five dollars, count up by fifty cents. When you reach the bottom of a column… continue at the top of the next column.

Task Arianna has been saving her chore money all summer. Her mother has allowed her to spend the money on school supplies of Arianna’s choosing. Here are some of her favorite items and the price for each:

Arianna has four dollars and twenty-five cents to spend.

a) Select two items she might choose to purchase.

What is the total cost of these two items?

b) Select three items she might choose to purchase.

What is the total cost of these three items?

How much money will Arianna have left over if she buys these three items

c) How many pencil boxes can Arianna buy without going over the $4 and 25¢ she has

saved? Explain your thinking in words.

Please keep playing all the games and thinking about all the activities found in the learning packets over the summer. Think about signing up for summer school so that we will all have a strong start in the new school year. For this week’s packet and video lesson, our focus is on time. Some of the most common questions in our lives are around time – ‘How much longer?’, ‘When are we leaving?’, ‘Is it time yet?’. Time is counted in a different base than we are used to – base 60. That means we count to 60 before turning over to a new unit – 60 seconds makes 1 minute, and 60 minutes makes 1 hour - in the same way that 10 ones make a ten. 60 is a cool number because we can make it by skip counting by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30! It is like a Lego model that can be built with many different pieces.

Building a new World I’m playing a lot of board games lately. I like this game because I get to build a new society.

I have to work around the mountains and the canyon in the center – can’t build there. I can draw forests, villages, or farms. Every farm must have at least one water source.

Every section I draw has to be a rectangle with at least four grid squares inside. That is the size of 1 tile. Monsters will live in any spaces left over.

My score is the sum of the areas of the sections I draw. The monster villages don’t count.

I earn bonus points for larger sections. Outline any areas on the map where I can earn two bonus points.

Outline any space left where I can earn one bonus point

How Much Longer? I’ve been spending my time indoors working on puzzles. This one is really difficult and I can’t wait to finish.

I asked my daughter “what fraction do we have left to do. She drew a line with her finger and said a little less than half. I agree, it is less than half but that dosen’t seem to be very precise. Use you math powers to make a more precise estimate of what fraction of the puzzle is left to do. Chalenge: Use a straigth edge – like a ruler or the edge of a book – to make your fracton model even more precise. Magic Pyramid For this pyramid, can you place the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the circles?

Only one number may be placed in a circle and all numbers must be used. When the final arrangement is complete, the sum of each side’s three numbers must all be the same.
