Dear Parents and Whānau
Ngā mihi nui i te tau hou ki a koutou katoa - New Year
greetings to you all!
A warm welcome to
Renee and her family
to our Banks Avenue
School community.
Renee started in
Dudley this week.
Have a go a learning the flute! On Thursday 15 February at 8.15am in the
Music Room, Room 23, you can come and
have a go at learning the flute. Janet Simone
is an experienced musician and teacher at the
SDMS and will be available to help you and
talk to you about potential lessons.
Sione Nuku is a star learner in Dudley. He has made a
great start with his Passion Based Learning through
knowing how to create a mind map that shows his
passions and things he would love to learn about. Well
done Sione, we are proud of you.
Hi, kia ora, Ahalan, Goede dag, Bonjour, Guten Tag. . .

‘HOT SHOT’ LEARNER’
Happy Valentine’s Day- I hope
there has been lots of aroha shared
today.
Great to see so many children
wearing mufti to support Heart day
- we raised $390.00.
Gentle Reminders School Hazards
If you identify a hazard around the school, e.g., a nail
sticking out, let the class teacher or office know.
Sunhats
School hats should be worn for Term 1 and Term 4.
Trees
Please remind your children that they are not allowed
to climb trees - reinforcing this safety concern from
home helps us.
Children waiting after school:
We are aware there are a few children leaving the
school grounds after school to wait for a parent to pick
them up at a designated point. This is a worry to us as
we don’t want any child waiting around on the street
without being supervised.
Kapa Haka We are thrilled to Matua Maaka taking our Kapa haka
group again this year. Kapa haka will begin this
Friday.
Cultural Day 28 March We are very proud of the fact that we have more than
30 different ethnicities at BAS. To
celebrate our wonderful diversity
we will be having a cultural day on
Wednesday 28 March. More
information will be coming home
later this term about the role
families will play in helping us
celebrate us.
Learning Conversations Reminder: These take place on:
Tuesday 27 February
Thursday 1 March
Children will be dismissed at 12:10pm on both these
day.
Booking information will be distributed with the
newsletter today and online bookings also open today.
We will be running a crèche for
siblings while you attend these
conferences. If you have any questions
or need some help with your booking,
please contact our school office.
Social Worker This is the third year the BoT are funding a school

Junior School Fencing In the school holidays we will have a fencing
contractor come in and fence
the junior school. This is as a
safety precaution as we have
some junior students who
could potentially leave the
school grounds.
HEARTbeat 106.7FM Don’t forget to tune into our school radio station,
HEARTbeat 106.7FM. Morning shows run from
8:30am-9:00am and lunchtime shows from 12:10pm -
12:40pm. If you live close to our school, you will be
able to listen to it by tuning into your radio at home or
in the car on the way to school. If not, our shows are
streamed online. All you need to do is Google
Shoutcast and then type banksavenueschool in the
Search Box. The name of our radio station will then
show up. All you do is click on play.
From Team Miro e-Learning is an integral part of the learning that takes place in Team Miro. This year we introduced BYOD (Bring
Your Own Device) into the Senior School, which gives children the option of bringing their own Chromebook or
Macbook Air to class. If you are thinking of buying a device it is important to make sure it has all the specifications
we require. All the information you need to know is on our school website. Please remember that bringing your own
device is not compulsory. We have school-owned devices available.

Little HEART Day At BAS we have several students with a variety of medical conditions. Some children have heart health issues and
receive support from Heart Kids Canterbury. One of the supports Heart Kids Canterbury offer is travel assistance to
families who must travel to Auckland hospital for medical treatment with their heart child. Where possible we try to
support organisations that support our whānau therefore today everyone dressed in red or wore a red heart on their
sleeve. Our value of Aroha sure shone today as we raised shone $390.00. Thank you
Walk or Wheel Safely to School Day
Wednesday 21 February The Christchurch City Council is promoting safe and
active travel to and from school by holding their
annual Walk or Wheel Safely to School Day on
Wednesday 21 February. All children who walk,
cycle or scooter to school on 21 February will receive
stickers and will go into a prize draw to receive a gift
card for the winning family. The draw for this will take
place at our Week 4 school assembly.
We will be sending home entry forms for this
competition to all families. Completed entries need to
be handed to our Wellbeing Team members who will
be at all of our school entrances next Wednesday
morning giving out stickers and collecting your entries.
We hope you will join in and support this event that
celebrates our school value of Hauora.
Digital Citizenship
John Parsons In the first week of March all Otakaro Cluster school
will be learning with John Parsons from ‘Simulate 2
Educate’. John specialises in ‘Internet Health and
Wellbeing’ and is a specialist in his field having
worked extensively with police, schools and
communities all over New Zealand. He will be
facilitating a number of events for our Banks Avenue
School community: student workshops, staff
professional development and parent workshops.
‘Nurturing and Valuing Identity’ Workshop for
Team Kahikatea and Team Miro
‘Digital Boundary’ Workshop for Team Totara
The philosophy underpinning these workshops that
students need to learn to make informed ethical
decisions founded on common decency and reasonable
standards of right and wrong. John’s workshops will be
held at school on Friday 9 March and will help
children to learn to:
Repel and report
unwanted attention
when online
Support each other in
times of need
Project self-confidence and control online
Nurture and protect online identity
Future proof themselves for later employment
Develop a strong sense of self worth
‘Raising Resilient Capable Children’ for Parents All of our parents are invited to join in. The first parent
workshop will be held at Chisnallwood Intermediate
on Tuesday 6 March in the afternoon (1:30-3pm) and
the second community presentation will be held at
Waitakiri School on Wednesday 7 March in the
evening (7-8:30pm). These workshops will cover:
Identifies the specific challenges children face
when using ICT
Includes guidance on behaviour management
processes for parents in the practical situations
they will face
This workshop empowers parents to take
responsibility for safeguarding their children
Parents leave with the tools to support their
children in how to use ICT safely and ethically
at home and at school
We hope you will be able to attend as John is
considered an expert in this field. To
further support parents we have bought
two copies of his new book for our
Parent Library: ‘Keeping Your
Children Safe Online’. Please email Ms
Thompson if you would like to read
this: [email protected]
and she will get it to you.
Linewize This year we have implement Linewize across our
school for all students. This programme has three
components: Surfwize + Classwize + Familyzone and
is being used for over 130,000 students across New
Zealand schools. Surfwize and Classwize allow us to
know in real time where our students are and what they
are doing. These give us alerts if there is any activity
that isn’t acceptable within our school HEART Online
expectations. We appreciate the support of our Board
of Trustees in subsidising this as this has reduced the
cost of this to $3 for all students for 2018. This will
come home as part of school accounts in Week 5,
Term 1. In next week’s newsletter we will outline the
Familyzone programme which is available for families
who wish to increase internet safety at home.

First Sovereign - Thank you We are grateful to have the robotics equipment needed to teach our children using the
objectives from the new Hangarau Matihiko Technology curriculum. Our learners couldn't
be more excited as you can see. The two changes to the curriculum have an emphasis on
digital technologies. Computational thinking for digital technologies is about
understanding the computer science principles that underlie all digital technologies, and
learning core programming concepts to become creators of digital technology, not just users. Designing and
developing digital outcomes involves learning how to design and produce quality, fit-for-purpose digital solutions.
The arrival of our new robotics gear is perfect as we can now take off with our learning through using these across the
school. Thank you to First Sovereign for making this happen by funding $2727.61. Banks Ave learners LOVE
robotics and you have got us out of the starters blocks - yippee!
