ABOUT CYANOSIS

Cyanosis is a bluish discolouration in the skin, indicating that oxygen levels in the blood are dangerously depleted. Whilst pulse oximeters are commonly used in medical facilities, there are many situations and medical conditions where they are unsuitable. Therefore visual observation to reliably detect Cyanosis is still critical for patients’ wellbeing.

Australian Standard AS/NZS1680.2.5 specifies the particular requirements for illumination in these Clinical Observation areas. High Colour Rendering Index (CRI) and sufficient red at wavelengths greater than 600nm are required to achieve the mandatory Cyanosis Observer Index (COI) of less than 3.3.

Conventional 8xx & 9xx Series fluorescent tubes cannot meet the COI requirements; the specialised “Hospital White” tubes that are commonly installed have notoriously poor efficiency (around 50 Lumens per Watt) and relatively lamp short life.

Luminaires used for clinical observation, operating theatres, emergency areas, and autopsy / mortuary labs are usually IP65 “Cleanroom” units that are sealed to the ceiling to eliminate hygiene risks.

These luminaires are difficult to open for service, so long lamp life is paramount. Since these sealed fixtures are extremely expensive to replace, an economical tube-only retrofit is the ideal solution to minimise the total cost of upgrading existing installations and reducing energy consumption.

THE FIRST GENERATION LED PRODUCTS

LED lamps are certainly revolutionalising the lighting market, and standard white LEDs are made cost effective by using a blue chip with a yellow phosphor coating to create the appearance of “white light”. The spectral emission of these conventional chips show distinct spikes in blue and yellow, and low levels of the vitally important red light above 600nm.

A few manufacturers have worked around the limitation by adding approximately 20% of red LED chips. Whilst improving the COI performance, it is not optimum since numerous red chips significantly reduce the efficiency of the overall package.

CARINDA’S INNOVATIVE SOLUTION

“True White” has been developed by Carinda to solve the inherent inability of standard white LED products to meet the stringent COI criteria for Clinical Observation areas.

Uniquely customised SMD LED chips have a specially formulated structure and phosphors that provide far more balanced light output, with reduced peaks in blue and yellow and substantially increased deep red lighting.

Performance is outstanding – over 115 Lumens per Watt from the 4 foot frosted T8 tube, which is unparalleled for a diffused LED product with a CRI of over 90. In combination with the numerous features and benefits of Carinda’s CIT LED Tube range, the upgrade of the old fluorescent lights in Clinical Observation areas has finally become financially viable.

This diagram compares the spectral light output of the new Carinda “True White” COI chips to standard 4000K LEDs:

NUMEROUS ADVANTAGES COMPARED TO FLUORESCENT

“True White” LED tubes provide equivalent lighting performance to the commonly used “Hospital White” style T8 fluorescent tubes, together with many notable advantages:

System efficacy is significantly increased from around 52 lm/W to 115 lm/W (around 55% more energy efficient).

Lamp life is doubled from <20,000 to over 36,000 hours.

Instant illumination to 100% (no warm up time).

Flicker-free illumination, both when starting and also during operation, provides excellent visual comfort.

LED lamp life is not decreased by frequent switching, so occupancy-based control systems become viable to save further energy in less frequently used areas.
