The Leeds German Market, “Christkindelmarkt”, is one of the biggest German Markets in the UK and is a great festive day for this time of the year. The market is located in Millennium Square, which is in the heart of Leeds City Centre and creates a brilliant festive atmosphere throughout the City. The market is organised by Leeds City Council in partnership with Frankfurt Am Main, and is now one of the most established markets in the U.K.

Suitable for all of the family, Christkindelmarkt provides a little something for everyone! Consisting of over 40 wooden stalls from authentic German traders, the market contains the perfect day out for the fam-ily, where the kids can pick up a gift for grandma and Dad can relax with an authentic German Beer!

If your kids need entertaining then the market has plenty for them to do! You can take them for a ride on the traditional carousel, look around all of the stalls, particularity the Christ-mas toy stalls and the food stalls! Then after all of the excite-ment they can settle down with a yummy bratwurst sausage and a big fluffy candy floss! The new Alp Chalet Bavarian eatery is the perfect place for families to eat. The cosy retreat enables you to sit in the café amongst others, to sample some of the finest German food or drink, until your stomach wants to pop! If you’re particularly interested in trying out some of the authentic German delicacies, then the market is right up your street! In the Alp Chalet Bavarian eatery there are various ap-petizers such as marinated pork with mustard vinaigrette, green salad & croutons, potato pancakes with salmon tartare, creamy potato soup with herbs and fried bacon, broccoli soup with slices of smoked salmon, all of which smelt delicious. Main courses include German hamburgers with fried egg and fried potatoes, Swabian roast beef with fried onions and Grilled pork fillet with ham & Swabian cheese noodles.

There is a selection of yummy food to enjoy from the wooden chalet stalls. Of course the popular bratwurst sausages is sold in many of the stalls, which comes in many different flavours such as spicy or cheese filled! There are stalls for desserts such as waffles & crêpes and you can choose from a variety of toppings. You can also enjoy candy floss, chocolate covered marsh-mallows, pretzels, potato cakes, gingerbread, dough-nuts and a candied fruit… the list is endless!

The Beer tent is situated in the centre of the Market and has plenty of seating areas for you to enjoy your beverages. A selection of alcoholic beverages are available for you adults, so when the kids are tucked up in bed you can get a baby sitter and sample some of the finest German beers. German beer is available in a beer stein, which holds a litre of the stuff so you can use the excuse as it’s Christmas to get very “merry”. Mulled Wine is also very popular and comes in a variety of different flavours such as: Roast apple, rasp-berry, cherry, blueberry, rum and amaretto. Shots are also on the list if you’re planning on a drunken even-ing! There is a choice of various vodkas & schnaps, including a speciality of vodka slush! Others include Rum, Jἅgermeister, amaretto and red & white wine. Hot drinks are also for sale in case you need to warm yourself up. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate are of course available, but if you want to spice things up you can try “Lady’s Dream” which is chocolate, baileys & cream, “Men’s Dream” which is chocolate, rum & cream or “Santa’s Dream” which is chocolate, ama-retto & cream. You must be drooling by now, surely?!

The German Market is also known for its unique seasonal gift ideas such as handmade crafts, candles and hand crafted jewellery and Christmas essentials including decorations, cards and perfect festive presents. Why not treat a family member or friend to a lovely gift which cannot be bought down the high street!

Traditional live entertainment is shown in the Beer tent every evening, so whilst you are supping your steins you can sing along to the authentic German show band and live music. However it does get very busy in the evening when the entertainment is on, so make sure you arrive early enough to get a seat! The atmosphere is great, you can just simply socialise with friends and sample some of the finest German beers and mulled wines, all for a warming festive sensation.

Handy Tip...

Millennium square is only a ten minute walk away from Leeds City Train Station, so you can get merry and not have to worry about driving home. However there is pay parking nearby and coach parking if you want to organise a trip with a group of people. Disabled access and toilet facilities are available at the market and there are stewards on standby if you need any help.

Over a quarter of a million visitors are expected to attend the market in the lead up to Christmas, so make sure you don’t miss out!
