relating to the preservation and conservation of the world’s cultural heritage. In a widely reported 1995 federal case, he recovered a 1,000-year-old sculpture that had been stolen from a temple in Southeast Asia.

Ian Tattersall is Curator Emeritus in the Division of Anthropology of the American Museum of Natural History and is also Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University. Dr. Tattersall is an expert on physical anthropology and human evolution, lectures on many educational expeditions

throughout the world, and is currently working on a multi-volume project to document the major fossils in the human fossil record. Trained in geology as well as in archaeology and anthropology, he has authored many books both for specialist and general audiences and curated several popular exhibits, including the Hall of Human Origins at the American Museum of Natural History.

Tuesday & Wednesday, January 31 & February 1. Enter Togo, the birthplace of vodun (voodoo), an animist religion well known for its colorful rituals. In the heart of the capital city of Lomé, experience a traditional voodoo ceremony, which includes dancing, chanting, and live music. Also visit a fascinating market filled with amulets, talismans, and ingredients for traditional medicines and “magic” spells, including love potions and good luck charms. This once-forbidden country is a window on North Africa’s ancient Roman world and home to some of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable historic sites. Swept by waves of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Turks, and Italians, Libya tells a fascinating tale of cultural conquest and evolution.

In Tripoli’s old town, explore an impressive array of Roman statues, arches, and relics of classical antiquity. Visit the ancient city of Sabratha—situated on the shores of the Mediterranean—and marvel at its beautifully reconstructed theater and exquisite mosaics. Then walk in the footsteps of Romans and Phoenicians who lived long ago in Leptis Magna, considered the best-preserved Roman ruins in Africa. Sunday, Monday & Tuesday, February 5, 6 & 7. From Alexandria, fly via private local air deep into the Sahara to the edge of the Great Sand Sea. Home to the Berber Siwan people for thousands of years, and at one point settled by the Greeks and visited by Alexander the Great, the Siwa Oasis is a world apart, filled with numerous salt lakes, freshwater springs, ancient olive and palm groves, fantastic sandstone hills, Greek temple ruins, and ingenious dwellings made of mud, salt, and straw. At sunrise, ride a horse or jeep through the unending sea of dunes, and unwind in a truly extraordinary eco-lodge, which has hosted such luminaries as Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Built with traditional methods, this lodge has no electricity and is softly lit by candles and the starry desert sky.

Delve into Egypt’s glorious past in Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in the 4th Century B.C. Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, February 8, 9 & 10. Reboard our private jet and fly to Sri Lanka, the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” Land in the capital city of Colombo, and spend the night. The next morning, take a vintage steam train to lovely Habarana, situated near nature preserves and the country’s ancient capitals. Saturday, Sunday & Monday, February 11, 12 & 13. Return to Colombo by train, then board our private jet bound for Burma—officially known as Myanmar since 1989. In the capital of Rangoon (Yangon), visit the dazzling gold stupa of the Shwedagon Pagoda, which has dominated the city’s skyline for more than 2,500 years. Legend has it that eight hairs of Gautama Buddha are enshrined inside.

The next day, fly by private local air to the ancient capital of Pagan (Bagan), one of the world’s most remarkable religious centers. In the two centuries before Kublai Khan overran the region in 1287, some 13,000 temples, pagodas, and other religious structures were built on the vast plain east of the Irrawaddy River. Today, more than 2,200 monuments remain in this “Kingdom of the Temple Builders.”

Venture into the northernmost corner of Oman, to the Musandam Peninsula, known as the “Norway of the Middle East,” where the ruggedly beautiful Hajar Mountains meet the sky-blue Strait of Hormuz. Cruise the Strait at sunset on a traditional wooden dhow, used by seafarers and traders here since the 8th century.

Take a jeep safari through the striking mountain landscapes of Wadi Khab Al Shamsi and see ancient petroglyphs and fascinating rock formations. Atop a high plateau, stop for an extraordinary vista over the peninsula and the Strait of Hormuz below.

Alternate: Instead of venturing into the mountains, take a cooking class and learn how to make some of the local delicacies. Two thousand year-old Shiraz was one of the most important cities in the medieval Islamic world, and also served as the capital of Persia during the Zand Dynasty in the 18th century. Due to its many notable artists and scholars, Shiraz became synonymous with learning, poetry, and artistry. Visit the Nasirolmolk Mosque, famed for its magnificent stained-glass windows and intricately tiled floors. Admire the artistry of Qavam’s Orangerie, an elegant house and gardens built in the 19th century for the governor of the province.

Explore Persepolis, the ancient ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid (or Persian) dynasty, which contains impressive remnants of a magnificent palace complex built by Darius the Great more than 2,500 years ago. See the grand Gate of All Nations and the glorious Apadana Palace. Please note that costs for visas, commercial air tickets, insurance, suite upgrades, and pre- or post-tour independent arrangements may not be refundable. We strongly recommend trip cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you upon registration.

insurance: trip cancellation, health, and accident insurance are available for purchase; we will send you more information upon registration. these important protections can save you money if you are forced to cancel or alter your trip. Insurance premium pay-ments are subject to the policies of the insurance carrier.

Baggage: On the private jet, each passenger is limited to 90 pounds of checked baggage in 2 bags (one bag of your choice limited to 50 pounds, and one wheeled bag that TCS & Star-quest Expeditions, Inc. will send ahead of time to you specifically for use on the expedition, limited to 40 pounds); plus a few smaller carry-on items such as a backpack, purse, camera, and/or laptop. For international flights, the air carrier’s liability is limited to the actual value of the baggage but not more than 1,000 Special Drawing Rights, approximately $1,250 per person, unless a higher value is declared at the time of check-in and an appropriate excess valuation charge is paid. Baggage, when not handled by TCS & Starquest Expeditions, and personal effects are at all times the sole responsibility of the participant.

single/shared accommodations & suite Upgrades: A limited number of single rooms are available at an extra cost on a first-come, first-served basis. We will do everything pos-

sible to assist persons requesting a roommate. If one is not confirmed, the single rate will be charged. Suite rooms are available in some destinations; more information about them, including their extra costs, will be sent to you in the months before departure.

itinerary changes: The itineraries and staff are subject to modification and change by TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. Every reasonable effort will be made to operate the expeditions as planned; however, should unforeseen world events and conditions require our itinerary to be altered, we reserve the right to do so for the safety and best interest of the group.

international Flights: The operation of these flights is subject to the foreign governments involved granting landing rights for the flight. If the air carrier cannot obtain these rights for any particular flight leg of an expedition, that flight leg will be canceled and alternative ar-rangements may be made, at the discretion of TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc.

health requirements: This is an active program, which requires you to make a realistic as-sessment of your health. All participants are expected to be in active good health, to enjoy traveling as part of a group, and to be ready to experience cultural differences with grace. Walking and climbing stairs are required in many hotels and airports, to board the aircraft, and are part of many excursions. Prior to traveling, we highly recommend visiting your personal physician for a check-up, so that you may discuss your ability to participate in this type of journey. To go to certain destinations or participate in certain activities, you may need to obtain your physician’s approval. In this case, a form will be sent to you for your physician to sign. An al-ternate destination or activity can be arranged, if your physician recommends it. Malaria and other diseases are present in some of the countries featured in this itinerary; proof of yellow fever inoculation is required. For the latest recommendations on specific health precau-tions for the areas you will visit, consult your physician and the Centers for Disease Control. Any physical condition requiring special attention, diet, or treatment should be reported in writing when the reservation is made. We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate travelers with special needs; however, we regret that we cannot accommodate wheelchairs. If you require a slower pace, extra assistance, or the use of a cane or walking stick, arrange-ments will be made for private touring at each destination, if necessary, at the discretion of our tour staff. Any extra cost for such arrangements will be the responsibility of the traveler. If you would like to forego some of the scheduled sightseeing to rejuvenate and relax, please feel free to do so at any time.

responsibility: TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. is the qualified tour operator that will or-ganize and administer the Legendary Places by Private Jet expedition. TCS & Starquest Expe-ditions, Inc. acts only as the agent for any transportation carrier, hotel, ground operator, or other suppliers of services connected with this tour (“other providers”), and the other provid-ers are solely responsible and liable for providing their respective services. The passenger tickets in use by the carriers shall constitute the sole contract between the carriers and the passenger; the carriers are not responsible for any act, omission, or event during the time tour participants are not aboard their conveyance. TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. shall not be held liable for (A) any damage to, or loss of, property or injury to, or death of, persons oc-casioned directly or indirectly by an act or omission of any other provider, including but not limited to any defect in any aircraft, watercraft, or vehicle operated or provided by such other provider, and (B) any loss or damage due to delay, cancellation, or disruption in any manner caused by the laws, regulations, acts or failures to act, demands, orders, or interpositions of any government or any subdivision or agent thereof, or by acts of God, strikes, fire, flood, war, rebellion, terrorism, insurrection, sickness, quarantine, epidemics, theft, or any other cause(s) beyond their control. The participant waives any claim against TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. for any such loss, damage, injury, or death. By registering for the Legendary Places by Pri-vate Jet expedition, the participant certifies that he/she does not have any mental, physical, or other condition or disability that would create a hazard for him/herself or other partici-pants. TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. reserves the right in their sole discretion to accept, decline to accept, or remove any participant on an expedition and reserves the right without notice to withdraw any part or all of the trip and to make such changes as may be necessary. TCS & Starquest Expeditions, Inc. shall not be liable for any air carrier’s cancellation penalty incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket to or from the first or last destination of the Legendary Places by Private Jet expedition.
