Leicester College’s Sport and Leisure teams work closely with local employers to develop the skills of their employees to meet changing demand within the sport and leisure sector.

We are proud of the City’s successful sporting heritage and during the last 12 months we worked once again with a number of the leading clubs to deliver spectator safety qualifications.

The College is also a leading provider of sport and leisure apprenticeships within Leicester and Leicestershire, training the next generation of sports professionals.

Activity Leadership Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2492 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This training aims to develop employees’ skills and knowledge within their chosen industry and aid progression skills and qualifications in activity leadership.

Who should attend?Employees working within the leisure or sports industry for more than 30 hours per week and who have successfully completed an initial assessment process.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees could progress on to the Advanced Apprenticeship in Leisure Management or Sports Development. This training can lead to a career within the sport and leisure industry as a coach or recreation assistant.

Exercise and Fitness Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2493 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?It aims to develop employees’ skills and knowledge within the exercise and fitness industry.

Who should attend?Employees working within the exercise and fitness industry for more than 30 hours per week and who have successfully completed an initial assessment process.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionOn successful completion, employees will have an industry recognised qualification which will allow progression in the exercise and fitness industry. Employees could progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Leisure Management, Sport Development or Personal Training.

The local authority is supporting young people through its apprenticeship programme, allowing them to earn and learn through a two year partnership with Leicester College.

“Leicester College has provided us with excellent training programmes for all our apprentices one of whom has gone on to the role of Sports Development Assistant.

“The training covers all aspects, including delivery of coaching and supporting staff on holiday and participating programmes, project planning and administration.

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to complement the skills that they learn, develop and use within the workplace with theoretical knowledge gained at College.

Training outcomesOn completion employees will achieve:• a NVQ in their chosen occupation (NVQ Level 2 for

Intermediate Apprenticeships and NVQ Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships)

• technical certificates relevant to their occupation and level of work

• Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT• workplace Health and Safety knowledge.

AssessmentAssessment is undertaken in the workplace and at College. Employees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence. Spectator Safety Intermediate Apprenticeship

What is the training about?It is aimed at employees within sports events. The qualification concentrates on all the aspects of spectator events and aims to highlight the importance of health and safety, and following ground rules and associated regulations.

Who should attend?Employees must be employed for more than 30 hours within the industry, and successfully complete an initial process.

Duration12 to 24 months, depending on the employee.

ProgressionProgression could be on to an NVQ Level 3 in Spectator Safety Certificate, or employees could become team leaders or shift managers.

What is the training about?The training aims to develop employees’ skills in management within the sport and leisure industry. Employees are required to be working in a supervisory position.

Who should attend?Employees must be employed for more than 30 hours within their chosen industry and successfully complete an initial assessment process.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionOn successful completion, employees will have an industry recognised qualification which will allow progression in their chosen career. Employees could progress on to the Foundation Degree in Sports, Sports Development, Sports Science or ILM.

Personal TrainingAdvanced Apprenticeship

What is the training about?This training is for employees who need to develop skills in advanced gym and personal training who are working in exercise and fitness roles within sport and leisure facilities.

Who should attend?Employees need to be Level 2 gym qualified and employed for more than 30 hours within their chosen industry, and successfully complete an initial assessment process.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionThe apprenticeship will lead to a career in personal training within the sport and leisure industry. Employees could progress on to the Foundation Degree in Sports, specialise in GP referrals or running their own freelance personal training.

Sport Operational ServicesIntermediate Apprenticeship

What is the training about?The training covers a range of topics, such as health and safety, accidents and emergencies, customer service, supervising pool users, setting up equipment and a range of other facility operation units.

Who should attend?You must be employed for more than 30 hours a week within your chosen industry and successfully complete an initial assessment.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees could progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship or Level 3 QCF/NVQ qualification. This training can lead to a career within the active leisure industry.

Training outcomesAt the end of the training employees will have covered the mandatory units of planning, instructing and evaluating an activity session and optional units covering topics, such as Health and Safety, accidents and emergencies and customer service.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

Fitness – Exercise to Music Progression CYQ Certificate

Course Code: C0523 Fees: £249 Start Date: 13 January 2015 Level: 2

What is the training about?It is for employees to develop knowledge and skills in planning and delivering safe and effective exercise to music sessions. The progression qualification is an add on to the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness – Gym.

Who should attend?Employees must already hold a CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing or equivalent.

Training outcomesThe training investigates generic topics essential in fitness. Employees will study units that involve learning how to plan for and deliver a safe and effective exercise to music session.

DurationFour weeks, five hours per week.

AssessmentContinuous assessment and exams.

ProgressionEmployees could continue their professional development by progressing on to the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.

Customer Service in the Leisure Industry Certificate

Course Code: C1246 Fees: £1,265 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This is a vocational course that embeds introductory customer service skills from preparing to deliver customer service through to following the rules and regulations in a customer service role within the sports and leisure industry.

Who should attend?Employees need to be working within the industry.

Training outcomesEmployees will gain the opportunity to select the most relevant units based on their particular job role. This includes handling customer service problems and delivering and dealing with customer service in a variety of ways.

DurationThis is a one year course.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionSuccessful completion allows progression to Advanced Customer Service level 3 that will cover supervision as well. Alternatively there is progression to supervisory positions in customer service, or into similar customer service roles within other organisations .

Fitness InstructingCYQ Certificate

What is the training about?It is for employees to develop the knowledge and skills to plan and deliver gym-based exercise sessions.

Who should attend?It is ideal for any gym/fitness worker who should be accredited in fitness instructing in order to run classes.

Training outcomesThe training includes basic anatomy and physiology, how to programme safe and effective exercise, healthy eating and how to communicate and motivate clients. It also provides employees with the skills and knowledge to deliver gym-based exercise programme.

DurationEight weeks. two evenings per week from 6pm to 8.30pm.

AssessmentContinuous assessment and exams.

ProgressionUpon completion of this training employees will be able to work as qualified fitness instructors. To further enhance their professional development, employees could also enrol on the following training: CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training and NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.

Circuit TrainingCYQ Award

Course Code: C0524 Fees: £249 Start Date: 10 February 2015 Level: 2

What is the training about?It is for employees to develop knowledge and skills in planning and delivering safe and effective circuit training sessions.

Who should attend?It is ideal for employees who should be accredited in order to run effective circuit training sessions.

Training outcomesIt consists of two units: group teaching skills and instructing circuit training. Employees will gain a thorough understanding of how to deliver safe and effective circuit training sessions.

DurationEight weeks, two evenings per week from 6pm to 8.30pm.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionUpon completion of this training, employees could progress on to the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing or CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness – Exercise to Music. Within the industry, employees will be able to deliver safe and effective circuit training sessions.

Instructing Kettlebells Award

Course Codes: C0527 Fees: £169 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This training will develop the delegate’s knowledge and skills to plan and deliver safe and effective kettlebell sessions to individuals and groups.

Who should attend?Delegates are required to hold a minimum of a CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing or equivalent.

Training outcomesThe training consists of two units: planning a kettlebell exercise session and instructing a kettlebell exercise session. Upon successful completion, delegates will have an industry recognised kettlebell instructing qualification accredited through Active IQ.

Duration9am to 5pm, two Saturdays.

AssessmentContinuous, delegates will be assessed via a portfolio of evidence and a practical demonstration.

ProgressionSuccessful completion of the training will allow delegates to instruct kettlebells and enhance their profile in the fitness industry, or they can progress on to any other Level 2 or 3 fitness qualification, providing that they meet the entry requirements.

Leisure Management Diploma

Course Code: C1181 Fees: 3 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?This qualification covers the following pathways: sport centres, gyms, hotels, caravan parks and activity centres.

Who should attend?It is for those who need to develop skills in leadership and management and is suited to employees who are working in management roles within sport and leisure facilities.

Training outcomesAt the end of the training employees will have covered four mandatory and five optional units covering a range of topics, such as health and safety, customer service, leadership and supervision.

DurationApproximately 12 months.

AssessmentEmployees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence. Assessment takes place within the workplace.

ProgressionUpon completion employees could look to progress to the Foundation Degree in Sports, Sports Development, Sports Science or Institute of Leadership and management, or pursue a career in management within the Sport and leisure industry.

Personal Training CYQ Certificate

Course Code: C0525 Fees: £1,600 Start Date: 24 February 2015 Level: 3

What is the training about?It will give employees a nationally and internationally-recognised qualification in personal training, enabling them to give one-to-one advice and guidance in a fitness environment.

Who should attend?Employees must already hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness – Gym-based Exercise or Exercise to Music.

Training outcomesThe training consists of four key units: anatomy and physiology for exercise, applying the principles of nutrition as part of a personal training programme, programming personal training with clients and delivering personal training with clients.

Duration16 weeks.

AssessmentExams and continuous assessment; employees will be assessed via two multiple-choice exams, two work booklets and numerous practical observations.

ProgressionEmployees can become personal trainers or further their professional development by moving on to a Level 3 Certificate in Exercise Referral for Specific Conditions, or a CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness – Exercise to Music (Progression), for instance.

What is the training about?A competence based qualification to perform tasks related to health, fitness and wellbeing.

Who should attend?It is for those who need to develop skills within the health, fitness and leisure industry and have responsibility for promoting fitness and exercise. Employees need to be in working within the industry.

Training outcomesAt the end of the training employees will have covered planning, instructing, motivating and evaluating a fitness induction and also parts of health and safety, accidents and emergencies and customer service. DurationNine to 12 months.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionOn successful completion employees can progress to the Level 3 Instructing Physical Activity or Sports Development. It could also lead to enhanced career prospects within the sport and leisure industry as a coach or fitness instructor.

Spectator Safety City & Guilds Certificate

Course Code: C1188 Fees: 3 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?This training is for spectator safety supervisors working at sports stadiums and spectator events. Supervisors are required to complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Who should attend?Employees should be working in the industry at supervisory level.

Training outcomesThis training is successfully completed through assessments within the work environment, planning for spectators, checking venues, dealing with emergencies and developing your skills.

Duration30 weeks.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionFrom the supervisor role, the next stage is stadium safety officer. Employees could also further their professional development by enrolling on the Spectator Safety Level 4 training.

Fast Track Travel and Tourism Management Higher National Certificate/Diploma

Course Code: C3134 Fees: £4,000 Start Date: 22 September 2014 Level: 4/5

What is the training about?A one year course providing learners with a range of essential travel and hospitality skills to further career opportunities in the sector and or lead to University progression. It is intended that employees will gain vocational experience through part time work.

Who should attend?Employees should have GCSE English ‘C’ or equivalent (without this they will be asked to complete a literacy test to the equivalent of GCSE). BTEC National Diploma/GNVQ Adv/AVCE in a related subject. A2 qualifications. In addition we welcome applications from employees (21yrs+) without the qualifications above but with appropriate work experience. There is a minimum International requirement for IELTS of 5.5.

Training outcomesThe course consists of core and optional units. The HNC is made up of eight units in total including: Travel and Tourism Sector, Finance, Developing Manager, Marketing, destinations, Tour Operation Management, Contemporary Hospitality and Customer Service.

Duration18 months.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionA HND Diploma top-up programme with the College which involves a further year of study. Alternatively you may choose to apply to progress on to university for a top-up degree. The qualification equips learners for a variety of interesting and worthwhile careers in the industry.
