The UK fashion industry contributes nearly £21 billion to the UK economy and employs nearly a million people. Leicester is famous for its knitwear, hosiery and footwear heritage and the wholesale clothing and footwear industry in the East Midlands is expected to be the fastest growing sector over the next four years.

Our Leicester-based training facility is excellently equipped, with fashion and footwear workshops and computer suites. Uniquely, Leicester College has the most comprehensive suite of footwear design specific software available in the UK and Europe, including a recent installation of Delcam Crispin’s 3D footwear design solution ShoeMaker.

Pattern Cutting and Garment ConstructionCertificate

Course Code: C0584 Fees: £600 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?It develops skills in pattern cutting and pattern manipulation.

Who should attend?Employees currently working in the fashion and textiles industry who wish to increase their pattern cutting skills. An understanding of pattern cutting is essential.

Training outcomesEmployees will learn about shrinkage of woven fabrics and how to apply shrinkage allowances to patterns. Employees will develop skills in pattern cutting and pattern manipulation. Both stretch and woven fabrics will be explored and it is anticipated that employees will gain an understanding of checks and pile fabrics and an insight into garment construction.

Duration20 weeks, three hours a week.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionEmployees could progress into new technical areas within the textiles and fashion industries. Upon completion employees may wish to progress on to full or part-time training in fashion and textiles.

Pattern Cutting for IndustryCertificate

Course Code: C0580 Fees: £312 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?It is suitable for employees who wish to develop skills in pattern cutting and pattern manipulation, learn about shrinkage of woven fabrics, how to apply shrinkage allowances to patterns, use stretch and woven fabrics, checks and pile fabrics.

Who should attend?Employees currently working in the textiles industry who wish to increase their skills.

Training outcomesEmployees will build on existing knowledge of pattern cutting to become more proficient in advanced aspects of pattern blocks, pattern adaptation, shrinkage, stretch and woven.

DurationTen weeks, three hours a week.

AssessmentPractical assessment.

ProgressionOn completion of the training employees may wish to progress on to BTEC First Certificate or National Diploma.

Vetigraph Fashion Digital Solutions contacted Leicester College in June 2013 with the aim of forming an education partnership.

The company based in Brighton, specialises in pattern cutting software and has kindly donated CAD software to Leicester College’s fashion department.

Director, Hervé Andrieu said the College provides a good grounding for future talent. He said: “Leicester College encourages nurturing and its reputation exceeds itself in terms of technical training. This was one of the reasons we approached the College.

“Employers today look for staff with talent along with technical training in essential skills. To my knowledge the College is only one of a handful who teaches industry-sought skills such as pattern grading, which is in increasing demand today as the industry is coming back to our shores.”

Introduction to Footwear College Certificate

Course Code: C0582 Fees: £350 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?It has been specifically designed to provide employees already working within the fashion and/or footwear sectors with an understanding of the fundamental principles used in the main areas of shoe production.

Who should attend?No previous shoe making experience is necessary but expertise within the fashion industry is strongly advised in order gain the most from this training. It would be an ideal introduction for employees who work in design, quality control, distribution, sourcing and all other allied trades.

Training outcomesIt will cover in a practical manner general principles of pattern construction, clicking and closing and lasting. It will enable employees to gain a broad insight into how footwear is developed and constructed for the mass market. Employees will produce one full pair of shoes from the design stage through to completion.

DurationThree days, 9am to 5pm.

AssessmentContinuous assessment.

ProgressionSuccessful employees may wish to progress on to Level 4/5 full and part time courses in fashion and textiles. This qualification will help individuals progress into new technical and managerial areas in the footwear and fashion industries.

Footwear Foundation Degree

Course Code: C0024 UCAS CODE D26 WJ74 Annual Fee: £6,000Start Date: 22 September 2014 Level: 5

What is the training about?This course addresses the needs of today’s footwear industry. It is equivalent to years one and two of a BA (Hons) degree and combines academic research with vocational practice in a range of footwear disciplines.

Who should attend?Trainee or junior technician in the footwear industry who wish to gain a professional qualification.

Training outcomesEmployees will study modules in: • footwear fashion and design• production technology• footwear buying• supply and management skills• style prediction and marketing strategies• manufacturing technology• professional development• product design and development.

DurationThree days per week, for two years full-time.

AssessmentEmployees are assessed through practical and written assignments. The training offers an opportunity to take part in competitions and live briefs.

ProgressionOn completion employees can top up by joining the final year of the BA Hons in Footwear at De Montfort University. It may also be possible to apply to other Universities to top up to other Footwear related Degree programmes.

This training allows you to progress within a global context into product development and design, footwear manufacturing and retail, quality control or footwear technology.
