Lennart Georg Meri (29 March 1929 – 14 March 2006) was a writer, film director, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and statesman who served as the second President of Estonia from 1992 to 2001.

Meri was a leader of the Estonian independence movement.

Lennart Meri was chosen the European of the Year in 1998 by French newspaper La Vie.

Meri was born in Tallinn, a son of the Estonian diplomat Georg Meri and Estonian Swedish mother Alice-Brigitta Engmann.

In 1941, the Meri family was deported to Siberia along with thousands of other Estonians.

The family survived and found their way back to Estonia.

Lennart Meri was married twice.

He had three children.

The 80th of the birth of Lennart Meri was celebrated by the publication of the speeches and by tributes from many former colleagues in Lennart Meri, The Pathfinder.
