Key Reasons for Client Virtualization

• Reduce security risks by retaining data in a remote data center & not on a local or mobile device

• Improve availability of applications

• Improve data accessibility on multiple devices

• Reduce TCO with operational efficiencies:

• Allows quick patching of the OS and applications

• Improve SLAs

• Allows device independence

• Simplifies data recovery, archiving, purging, & backup

• Allows IT administrators to react quickly to ever changing needs

Lenovo Client Virtualization with Citrix XenDesktop

• Platforms supported in this RA

– System x3550, System x3650; Flex System x240

• Hypervisors Supported

– XenDesktop is an open architecture that supports several hypervisors

– VMware ESXi (vSphere), Citrix XenServer, and Microsoft Hyper-V

• Provisioning – Two Types

– Provisioning Services (PVS) – Streams a single desktop image to create multiple virtual desktops on one or more servers; Pro: VM on a target device does not need local hard disk drive to operate;

– Machine Creation Services (MCS) - Streams a single desktop image using integrated functionality built into the hypervisor; Pro: Requires fewer servers

• User Types

– Office Workers – Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel

– Power Workers – CAD, Programmers, Video Creation

– Knowledge Workers – SAP, Finance

Citrix XenDesktop RA - Performance Results for Hypervisors

• This RA provides performance results for all three worker types and on all three hypervisors provisioned with Machine Creation Services

• Client Types

– Stateless – Desktop image not personalized to an individual user and have the same appearance for all users

– Dedicated – Desktop images dedicated to one user and can be personalized

Page 12: Lenovo Client Virtualization

12

Citrix XenDesktop RA - Sizing for User Types

• Compute server recommendation for Office workers

• “The default recommendation for this processor family is the Xeon E5-2680v4 processor and 512 GB of system memory because this configuration provides the best coverage for a range of users. Lenovo testing shows that 225 users per server is a good baseline and has an average of 75% usage of the processors in the server. If a server goes down, users on that server must be transferred to the remaining servers. For this degraded failover case, Lenovo testing shows that 270 users per server have an average of 87% usage of the processors. It is important to keep this 25% headroom on servers to cope with possible failover scenarios”

• Compute server recommendation for Knowledge workers

• “For knowledge workers the default recommendation for this processor family is the Xeon E5-2680v4 processor and 512 GB of system memory. Lenovo testing shows that 175 users per server is a good baseline and has an average of 77% usage of the processors in the server. If a server goes down…”

• Compute server recommendation for Power workers

• “For power workers, the default recommendation for this processor family is the Xeon E5-2699v4 processor and 768 GB of system memory. Lenovo testing shows that 175 users per server is a good baseline and has an average of 72% usage of the processors in the server. If a server goes down…”

14

Citrix XenDesktop RA - Sizing for Graphics Accelerators

• Guidance provided for all three supported hypervisors and for multiple GPUs

• The VMware ESXi hypervisor supports the following options for multiple GPUs and modes of operation

– Dedicated GPU with one GPU per user: Virtual dedicated graphics acceleration (vDGA) mode

– GPU hardware virtualization (vGPU) for 1 - 8 users

– Shared GPU with users sharing a GPU: Virtual shared graphics acceleration (vSGA)

HEARTLAND JIFFY LUBE

Revving up the reliability of its IT services with hyperconverged infrastructure from

Lenovo

Client success summary Oil change and car service provider Heartland Jiffy Lube found that its diverse and

aging IT infrastructure was increasingly impacting operations and employee

productivity. To boost availability and reliability, the company implemented Intel®

Xeon® processor-equipped Lenovo Converged HX5500 Appliance with Nutanix

Enterprise Cloud Platform software – radically simplifying its infrastructure. Today,

Heartland Jiffy Lube has peace of mind that IT systems will run uninterrupted, all

while leaving room for growth.

GOAL ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL

Delivering grade-A academic services to students with Lenovo technology

Customer success summary GOAL Academy High School delivers academic courses and learning material to

students online. But without a centralized server infrastructure in place, the school

found it increasingly difficult to react rapidly to curriculum changes, and often

suffered from unplanned outages. To boost agility, performance and reliability,

GOAL Academy implemented the Lenovo Converged HX3500 Series appliance

with Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform software. Supported by the Lenovo

solution, GOAL Academy can give students anytime access to up to date learning

material – without interruption.

Customer success summary From grain to glass, Beam Suntory must ensure that manufacturing systems run

24 hours a day, seven days a week to distill the premium spirits the company is

known for.

To minimize the risk of unplanned downtime, Beam Suntory replaced the aging IT

infrastructure supporting its core Wonderware industrial management systems with

Lenovo Converged HX3310 hyperconverged appliances, integrated with Nutanix

software. Now, the company has complete confidence that its IT systems will run

uninterrupted, keeping the drinks coming.

39

Client Virtualization on HX3310 and HX3510 Platforms The Lenovo Converged HX Series appliances are available in five families

that can be tailored to your needs:

• HX3000 Series: optimized for compute-heavy workloads like client

virtualization.

The Lenovo Converged HX3310 and 3510 platforms deliver a turnkey

infrastructure solution for VMware Horizon and Citrix XenDesktop client

virtualization workloads and benefit from:

• Higher performance and scalability: Start small and scale

databases as your needs grow, but without the concessions of

traditional infrastructure.

• Improved availability: Keep key applications protected and running

with frequent, easy-to-restore backups and affordable, simple disaster

recovery.

• Reduced operational complexity: Leverage simple, consumer-

grade management, VMcentric operations and unprecedented

The Lenovo Converged HX Series Nutanix Appliance is simple to deploy

with compute, storage and virtualization co-located on a single node

• Enables you to dramatically simplify your server, storage and

virtualization deployments and pool your resources into a single

virtualized infrastructure

Starting with as few as three nodes to keep your acquisition

costs down, the Lenovo Converged HX Series appliances are

capable of immense scalability as your needs grow and support

a rich suite of workloads which are detailed herein.

Citrix XenDesktop & VMware Horizon on HX Series All Flash

The Lenovo Converged HX3310 hybrid appliance has been complimented

with an all flash variant:

The results for all flash and hybrid are somewhat similar for relatively low

logon rates of every 30 seconds, with the HX-3310-F providing some

slight advantages.

However as the logon rate increases, the all flash HX3310-F appliance

delivers better performance compared to the hybrid HX3310 appliance.

The all flash appliance has a higher capacity for IOPS and lower

latencies, particularly for the write requests that occur during a logon and

any accesses to slower hard drives is eliminated.
