PUT YOUR FAITH INTO ACTION THIS LENT: Our faith tells us that Lent is a time for transformations. It’s a time to look at our own lives and make changes which bring us closer to God.

This Lent, CAFOD is giving us the chance to create amazing transformations in the lives of other people too by praying, giving and taking action. You can make a difference to people like Amparo Oylia, an exceptionally brave and inspiring woman.

Amparo used to live on a beautiful island in a river in the north of Colombia. Her family didn’t have much, but they were happy. She says: “It was a peaceful and natural life. We had land to farm, crops to grow. I used to fish for our dinner and we had vegetables and fruit to eat.” But Amparo’s life changed forever when her house in Colombia was seized by guerrilla soldiers. “The rebel soldiers gave my family one hour to leave our home before they killed us. We took nothing, just the clothes we were standing up in. Everything changed that day.”

Alone in a new town, Amparo found the only job available: washing clothes. An exhausting 12-hour shift paid barely enough to feed her family. Traumatised and angry, she sank into depression.

CAFOD’s partner, Pastoral Social, was able to help her by providing food packages for the family and counselling for Amparo. Soon, Amparo’s spirits started to lift. Her life improved further when Pastoral Social helped Amparo learn the practical and business skills she

needed to open a metal furniture workshop together with six colleagues.

A regular income means Amparo can improve her house and pay for her children’s education. With her confidence growing daily, we know she can do it. “The business project is a great

opportunity – the best I’ve had in my life,” she says. “Now we have food to eat and regular money to buy clothes and shoes. Best of all, I rely on myself – I can provide what my family needs.” Amparo is at the start of her transformation. It’s not going to be easy, but she is determined to work hard and build a better future for her children.

Amparo was forced to ‘give up’ her home. What will you give up to help her start again? Why not join other CAFOD supporters and give it up! throughout the Lenten season?

Ask for a money box! Whatever you give up, put the money you save in the box and watch your donations grow throughout Lent.

You can order give it up! resources by calling 020 7095 5682 or by going online to www.cafod.org.uk/giveitup.

You can also sign up online for weekly Lent reflections so that you can pray in solidarity with those in need, or join CAFOD’s campaign to support people like Amparo who rely on a small business to make a living.

Thank you for supporting Lent Fast Day. Don’t forget, you can make your donation go even further to help Amparo and others like her, by filling in the Gift Aid form on the Fast Day envelope or the give it up! money box.

Please give as generously as you can and make a life-changing difference this Lent.

Thank you!

“Thank you for all you have done – I can assure you it is a lot! I am so pleased with my job; it’s given me and my children happy faces. Please continue to find it in your hearts to help other people who are experiencing tough times.”

FAST DAY PRAYER

A BEACON OF HOPE

God of light, spark in us the desire for an end to poverty and injustice, and let our actions shine like a beacon of hope as we reach out in solidarity to others around the world.

Help us to bring about a world where all people have the opportunity to be creative, use their skills and work in dignity, growing in confidence, and transforming lives.

And may all our work reflect your glory and your unending love.

Amen.

£1800 FOR HAITI FROM HOLY INNOCENTS PRIMARY SCHOOL IN ORPINGTON

CAFOD Southwark Diocesan Manager Jim Simmons visited Holy Innocents' Primary School in Orpington on October 4th last year to talk to the pupils about CAFOD’s work and to receive a cheque for the CAFOD Haiti Appeal.

The school had decided to raise funds for Haiti following the earthquake in January. Ideas came from the children themselves, with encouragement from Mrs. Kathleen Kerr the Head Teacher, and events were organised and run by the school council. There was a sponsored "film and popcorn" afternoon, and a "nearly new" toys and books sale. One of the children came up with the idea of a cake sale and parents from each class baked some things which went down very well and were enjoyed by all the school, including the teachers! There was also a sponsored run by the children, and a St Patrick's Day celebration when everyone wore something green. All of which raised £1800 for CAFOD's work in Haiti. Well done and congratulations to Holy Innocents' Primary School.

MICHELLE RAN THE GREAT SOUTH RUN FOR CAFOD

26 year-old Michelle De Souza from Morden in Surrey ran for CAFOD in the 21st BUPA Great South Run on Sunday 24th October 2010.

Michelle, who qualified as a dentist in 2006, completed the 10 mile run in 1 hour 52 minutes. This is her first year of taking part in sponsored running events. She decided to do the Great South Run after a successful run in August which encouraged her to run again and over a longer distance. She chose to run for CAFOD because her parents are supporters and her church supports CAFOD too. She wants to do another run next year, either the Great South Run again, or possibly the Great North Run and is considering running for CAFOD again. So far Michelle has raised £325 for CAFOD from the Great South Run.

Many thanks and very well done Michelle. Photo: Laura Bigoni

SR ELIZABETH VISITS CAFOD’s CONNECT2 PROJECT IN ETHIOPIA

Sister Elizabeth Campbell, OSU gave a talk to parishioners of Our Ladye, Star of the Sea in Greenwich on Sunday 24th October 2010 – following her visit in August 2010 to Biera where CAFOD’s Connect2 project in Ethiopia is based.

This is an edited version of her talk:

This summer, having given an English course in the capital, Addis Ababa, we travelled north to check on some of the schemes we had obtained funding for. We found ourselves in Adigrat, just near the border with Eritrea and only 34 kilometres from the little village of Biera which our parish is being asked to help, in a project sponsored by CAFOD in co-operation with the Catholic Archdiocese of Adigrat.

The Archbishop, hearing that we would like to visit the village, lent us his car and his driver. We set off to negotiate the track to the village, an unmade road, which in spite of the driver’s skill and care, was quite a bone shaker. After some 30 km, the driver turned off the track we were following, and launched into the scrubland. Without warning the car stopped, the driver turned off the engine, announced that we had arrived. Walking forward a few paces, we realised that we were standing on the edge of a cliff, and there, 200 feet below, in a green flat bottomed valley, lay a small hamlet, peaceful and silent. This was Biera, a small church, a primary school and a few scattered houses. In fact, where we were standing, was the ideal place for a bird’s eye view of the whole project which CAFOD was promoting in the valley below. The local priest, Fr. Fitwe, is a young man of 80 years who studied at Cambridge for 4 years in his youth, lectured in science at the local seminary and has gained enough medical expertise to enable him to act as the village doctor. From our vantage point on the cliff top he gave me a tour of the work being sponsored by CAFOD and supported by the parish of Our Ladye, Star of the Sea, a wonderfully heartening spectacle to see a community emerging from poverty and moving towards a more stable and secure livelihood. Fr. Fitwe was genuinely thrilled with our visit and full of gratitude for all the financial support.

Hitherto the villagers have grown their crops in the rainy season and lived off the produce for the rest of the year. If times are hard in the dry season, they have to sell their livestock and perhaps even their household chattels. But irrigation projects could change all this. The government is anxious for people to stay on the land. There is no alternative occupation for them, but food production needs to be more secure.

The plan which CAFOD is promoting in Biera hits all the right buttons. It covers a three year period and entails building reservoirs in 10 little communities along the length of the valley. These will collect the rainwater and underground spring water, and serve a network of canals, to deliver the water to each small holding; all the structures will be lined with stone to prevent water loss by seepage. In this way it should be possible to grow 3 crops a year, instead of one – cereals in the rainy season, and a variety of crops at other times. There will be guidance for the smallholders in agricultural techniques, use of fertiliser, control of pests, preparation of soil, and storage of crops. Fruit tree seedlings will be distributed to encourage apple growing which fetches a good market price, and if a cooperative can be established it will generate funds to buy seeds, beehives and fertilisers – to help them to be self reliant in the longer term.

This is a project which has the potential to transform the lives of people in Biera, I hope you will feel it is something worth engaging with.

PAKISTAN: CAFOD TRAINING HELPS VILLAGE FIX WATER SUPPLY The worst floods in living memory hit the village of Basala in northern Pakistan in August 2010, destroying the system that supplied homes and schools with safe drinking water. The floods caused such widespread damage that many people feared the water system would never work again. It wasn’t the first time the pipe had been affected by a natural disaster: the earthquake of 2005, which killed nearly 75,000 people in Pakistan, had also cut off Basala’s water supply. After that earthquake, we worked through our partner, Catholic Relief Services, to fix it – and also to train villagers how to carry out repairs in the future. Thanks to that training, local people were able to identify the damage quickly when the flood struck. They dug out the broken pipe, and fixed the system in just five hours. HAITI: INCREASED SUPPORT FOR FIGHT AGAINST CHOLERA CAFOD stepped up its efforts to fight the cholera outbreak in Haiti, as concerns grew at the accelerating rate of the infection. Poor sanitary conditions and flooding in some regions as a result of Hurricane Tomas put more and more people at risk.

Those living in camps in and around Port au Prince are especially vulnerable Earthquake-devastated Haiti is facing the most severe outbreak of cholera in its history. According to the World Health Organisation the disease has killed more than 2,000 people. An estimated 80,000

Haitians are now said to be symptomatic. We are supporting the work of our Caritas partners in the fight against cholera by: • Supporting the clean water, sanitation and health promotion

work of Catholic Relief Services within camp communities whose poor sanitary conditions make them vulnerable to infections.

• Supporting the purchase of medical supplies for seven health centres. These supplies include antibiotics, oral and intravenous rehydration fluids, and sanitation products such as aqua-tabs, bleach, hand sanitizers and soap.

• Supporting Caritas Port au Prince in their work distributing aqua tabs, and in their public awareness campaign in eight camps.

CAFOD Head Office Staff moved into a new office building, Romero House, on 10th May 2010. Adapted from the staff guide book, here is some information about CAFOD’s new 21st Century headquarters.

A BUILDING FOR CAFOD Romero House was designed for us. A sense of community, sharing ideas, working effectively together, talking and socialising are important to us. Open plan working environments make it easier to interact and share knowledge and ideas. Break-out areas and meeting rooms on split level floors give us the opportunity to meet colleagues from other teams. The Pavilion, with views over London, is a place to relax, make lunch and talk to colleagues informally. It has been designed to encourage us to leave our desks and enjoy lunch with others.

A GREEN BUILDING Romero House embodies CAFOD’s livesimply philosophy by minimising the impact on the environment. The building produces around 20 per cent of the energy it uses, which will save about £6,000 each year. The building is heated and cooled by highly efficient heat pumps connected to five boreholes dug 125m into the earth. The atrium and office windows are designed to maximise daylight in the building. This reduces the need for artificial lighting and the amount of energy the building consumes. Lights are connected to movement sensors to make sure they switch off when spaces are empty. A natural green sedum roof increases the biodiversity of the area by encouraging

plants and insects to make it their home. Rainwater collected from the roof is used for toilet flushing. Aerated taps and low water use fittings mean less water is used. Space for 50 bikes, and dedicated shower and changing facilities encourage us to choose environmentally friendly forms of transport to get to and from work. Recycling bins are provided in all kitchens and office areas to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Page 11: Lent Fast Day Friday 18 March 2011 - WordPress.com · 2011-01-17 · 1 Newsletter January 2011 Southwark Lent Fast Day Friday 18 March 2011 “The rebel soldiers gave my family one

11

The roof mounted solar panels, which convert the sun’s energy into electricity, generate around 3500 kWh per year saving the equivalent of two tonnes of CO2.

Why is it called Romero House ? Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador from 1977 to 1980, is a high profile modern martyr. Shot dead while saying Mass, Romero had spoken out against a repressive regime and the torture and killing of those who called for reform. A CAFOD partner, his archdiocese’s radio station was bombed twice, and twice replaced by us. Romero’s memory continues to inspire us today: Working in solidarity with the poor and enabling them to have a voice. Showing compassion for our brothers and sisters around the world. Being ready to take risks for the cause of justice and peace. Romero is a figure who goes beyond Latin America; his death has challenged the universal Church to put the poor first, to recognise their challenges and work with them to overcome them

Shared spaces

The Pavilion, on the top floor, is a place to relax, make lunch and talk to colleagues informally. Our library is in the Pavilion. There is a wide range of books on development, economics, history, Catholic Social Teaching, management, self-development and there are a number of travel guides which can be borrowed. There are also current and back issues of newspapers and journals. Mass is celebrated in the pavilion every week.

The prayer room, on the 4th floor, is a quiet place to pray, reflect and meditate.

The break-out areas, on each mezzanine floor, are places to make tea and coffee, talk and meet colleagues from the floors above and below. There are recycling bins in the break-out areas and near the copy points where Cardboard, Paper, Card, Newspapers, Magazines, Envelopes, Plastic bottles, Aerosols, Tin cans and Glass jars and bottles, Tea bags, Coffee grounds, Fruit skins and cores and Vegetable peelings can be recycled.

FLOODS AND LANDSLIDES HIT COLOMBIA Floods and landslides have affected more than 1.5 million people in Colombia, killing nearly two hundred and leaving tens of thousands homeless. The floods were caused by the heaviest rains to hit Colombia for forty years, a consequence of what’s known as the “La Niña” phenomenon: colder than usual water currents in the Eastern Pacific have caused an exceptionally wet rainy season. The floods destroyed the houses of the most vulnerable people and also some of the country’s most important farming areas. Our local partner, Pastoral Social / Caritas Colombia, has provided support to over 11,000 people in the last three months. They have distributed food, cooking materials, personal hygiene kits, mattresses, blankets, hammocks, and mosquito nets, and carried out vital health visits. But the emergency is by no means over… FLOODS IN BENIN: A FORGOTTEN EMERGENCY The severe floods that hit Benin in October 2010 received little media attention, but they had a devastating effect on the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

The floods were the worst that the West African country has faced in nearly half a century, affecting more than 680,000 people. At least 46 died, and several hundred cases of cholera were reported. Thousands of families are still in need of clean

drinking water, shelter and food. Floods are not rare in Benin, but these have had devastating effects. The torrential rains claimed many lives, and many have lost their houses and their crops. Our financial support will be used for the purchase of food, which is one of the most important needs at this stage. We gave £43,500 to our partner, Caritas Benin, to help them provide food for the most vulnerable. Thanks to your support, they are handing out baskets containing cereals, beans and cooking oil to 4,000 families made homeless by the floods. CAFOD RESPONDS TO ‘TWIN DISASTER’ IN INDONESIA CAFOD is pledging £30,000 to help our partners in Indonesia respond to the twin disasters which struck the country – a volcanic eruption in Yogyakarta, Java, and a tsunami in the Mentawai islands off the western coast of Sumatra. Caritas Indonesia aid workers are travelling the long distance by boat to the remote Mentawai Islands to distribute vital emergency supplies, including shelter, clean water and cooking utensils. In Yogyakarta, a team of workers from the local Parish helped the community members to evacuate their homes and identified the most pressing needs. Over 100 people were declared dead and 500 more missing following the tsunami, which was triggered by a 7.7 Richter Scale underwater earthquake late on Monday 25th October 2010. Waves up to 3 metres high swept away hundreds of homes in ten villages. The earthquake also rocked towns along Sumatra’s western coast — including Padang, which was hit last year by a deadly 7.6-magnitude quake that killed 1100 people. Less than 24 hours later, Mount Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, erupted, spewing out rocks and ash, severely affecting the community living nearby. Up to 19,000 people living within the 10-kilometre danger zone were evacuated, with 25 people reported killed.

Joseph and Matthew Watchorn from St Edmund’s Parish in Beckenham saw pictures of the floods in Pakistan last year and decided over the summer holidays that they wanted to do something to raise money for CAFOD’s disaster relief work in Pakistan. They chose to hold a sale and mini-fete in their garden, which turned into quite an event in the end. Everything sold either belonged to the boys, or was donated by family, friends or neighbours. There was even a little piece in The Catholic Herald about their endeavours.

They made a flyer for the fete which said: Garden sale and mini-fete, in aid of Pakistan disaster appeal, Sunday 12th September 2-4 pm. We are selling some of our toys and will have some stalls in our front garden to raise money for CAFOD’s Pakistan appeal. There will be a tombola, raffle, some children’s games, a second hand sale and homemade cakes. Please please come along. Joseph and Matthew

Mum (Susie) told us: “We had the most fantastic afternoon and the boys raised an amazing sum for CAFOD’s Pakistan appeal! The most popular game for the children was the loo roll challenge. Plumb Centre in Forest Hill kindly lent us a toilet and the children paid 20p a go to try and throw toilet rolls into it!”

Joseph (9) and Matthew (7) attend St Mary’s Catholic school in Beckenham, and they wrote this article about the event for their school newsletter: OUR FETE FOR PAKISTAN We organised a fete in our front garden on September 12th to raise money for CAFOD’s disaster relief work in Pakistan. The pictures we saw of the floods there during the summer holidays made us want to do something to help people who have lost their homes. At the fete we had a toy stall, tombola, a raffle, a book stall, drinks and cakes, name the bear, ‘win a football’ and a loo roll challenge. Everyone loved the loo roll game; you had to throw loo rolls into a toilet to win a prize! We have raised more than £700 altogether, from all the friends and neighbours who came along and people have given us donations as well. Thanks everyone! Joseph and Matthew

Well done Joseph and Matthew and thanks very much for all your hard work raising so much money for flood relief in Pakistan.

On the last weekend in September 2010, young people in St Thomas a Becket Parish, Wandsworth were invited by Parish Priest Mgr Gerry Ewing to speak to parishioners about the Act on Poverty Campaign and Harvest Fast Day. They gave a short talk during Masses, in place of the homily, and showed 2 CAFOD Videos. They also invited parishioners to write their personal promises and prayers and to stick them onto a No. 10 Downing Street door that they had made. Act on Poverty Action Postcards were also available, and 89 of these were signed and sent to the Prime Minister.

A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO BABY LILY

Frank and Christine Hayward from Thornton Heath write about their granddaughter Lily, in whose memory they set up a Candlelight Fund for CAFOD.

“If you had told us two years ago that our family and friends would be able to raise almost £6,000 for CAFOD we would have responded with one word: ‘impossible’. Yet through the Baby Lily May Alice Carlyle Candlelight Fund, ‘impossible’ has become ‘possible’ and ‘possible’ has become reality! This is our story:

On 30 December 2008, at a routine 28-week scan, our daughter Katherine and son-in-law, Ian, were told that one of their expected twins had died. Baby Lily’s heart had stopped beating. So began her twin brother’s fight for survival in the womb – and the agony of loss for Katherine, Ian, and their children Jack and Emily; an agony shared by the rest of our family.

Katherine faced the six weeks that followed with astounding courage and Lily and William were delivered by Caesarean section on 10th February 2009. We celebrated William’s safe but premature arrival and we mourned the loss of our little granddaughter. With the memory of Lily’s tiny face and form in our minds, and trying to find ways of consoling our dear Katherine and Ian, we decided to ask CAFOD to set up a Candlelight Fund in her memory. There had to be some purpose for Lily’s short life...

Together with Katherine and Ian we felt that the fund would give other children the chance of life and enable their families to face a future full of hope and fulfilment. Amazingly we feel that we have also become beneficiaries of the fund! Our families received the warm and caring support of Beth, Susanna and John at CAFOD; we cheered Ian as he ran the half marathon at the O2; and we have made cuddly toys, watercolours and jams which we sold at our summer fair and the childrens’ school Christmas fair. Throughout this time, we’ve been overwhelmed by the

generosity of our family and friends in donating to the fund.

Katherine has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of CAFOD as well as finding the time to write a book about Lily for her children. And as a family, we are resolved to do all we can to help the fund grow for CAFOD, so watch this space! We are ‘just one family’ hoping to make a small difference for ‘Just One World’.
