INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The School Sports WA Interschool Athletics Carnival was held at the Western Australia Athletics Centre on Thursday, 11 October with Bullsbrook College competing in Division E. All students need to be commended in the way they represented the school, competing to their best ability and encouraging all members of the athletics team through their events.
It was a very successful day for Bullsbrook College, winning the Meritorious Award (highest amount of points based on student population) and finishing second overall by 260 points which means we will be promoted to Division D next year. Special individual congratulations to Kaitlin Henderson (Year 7 Champion Girl), Sarah Henderson (Year 9 Champion Girl), Ryan Portelli (Year 9 Champion Boy) and Jarrod Messenger (3rd overall).
A big thank you also needs to be given to all the student assistants on the day who helped the long jump event run smoothly. To the athletics team - you have all done the school proud, exceeding expectations whilst all enjoying a great day. Excellent effort Team Bullsbrook.

PLANNING 2019
We are already well into our planning for 2019. An early indication of our enrolment numbers significantly helps with this planning. We ask that if you know that your child(ren) will not be attending our school in 2019, please pass this information to the school office. Also, we are keen to know of anyone intending to enrol with us for 2019 that has not yet done so. If you or anyone you know of is intending to enrol their child(ren) for 2019 and have not already contacted the school, please encourage them to do so at their earliest convenience – this includes for Kindergarten and Pre-Primary.
To attend Kindergarten in 2019, children need to have been born between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015. If your child’s birthday falls within these dates, and he/she is not yet enrolled, please complete an application for enrolment as soon as possible. Forms can be accessed from the Reception.

YEAR 12 PRESENTATION
By the time our students reach the end of Year 12 the bonds between the teachers who have spent the most time with them and these young adults have become strong. For that reason, the final day of Year 12 is filled with mixed emotions. Relief is one of those emotions and so is sadness that another cohort is moving on.
The events of their final day are carefully planned because we want our Year 12s to leave knowing they matter greatly to us. We also want to send them off with the feeling that they have so much support behind them as they take the next step to follow whatever their dreams may be.
The staff who worked with the Class of 2018 describe them very fondly because of the wonderful characteristics the group exhibited. Whenever they participated in off campus training, camps or excursions we weren’t the only ones who felt that way. They have been a terrific bunch to work with.
A very big thank you to all of the staff who worked behind the scenes to make the last day a highlight for our departing Year 12s. The day started with a healthy breakfast. Following that we gathered the group at the front of the school and a Lone Piper piped them into our traditional Farewell Assembly where Year 6 students and Year 11 students formed a ‘guard of honour’. At that Assembly we celebrated the achievements of a number of Year 12s. Jewel-Marie Williams was our star. Her contribution to the sport of Basketball has been very noteworthy and we’re extremely proud of Jewel-Marie as one of our strongest ATAR students balancing the workload that her commitments in and out of school require of her. The extent of Jewel-Marie’s civic mindedness and sporting achievements is no mean feat when studying ATAR in Year 12.
At the Assembly, each of our Year 1 students presented each of the Class of 2018 with a sash and an affirmation card. It was a very warm experience to see our little ones reaching up to the heights of our tallest students.
Having almost all of our school gathered in the Sports Hall for such important occasions is always a heartening experience. The behaviour
was outstanding and the sentiment warm.
Mandoon Estate Winery hosted us for the Presentation Evening. Special guests assisted staff in presenting special awards and we have listed our proud award recipients here in this newsletter.
A very warm thank you to: Squadron Leader, Richard Heith, RAAF Base Pearce Ms Ella Cahill representing Attorney General, Hon Mr Christian Porter, MHR Pearce Ms Kim Travers, candidate for Pearce, representing Ms Jessica Shaw, MLA Swan Hills Ms Patty Jones, City of Swan Councillor, Pearce Ward representing Councillor K Bailey, North Ward
Our Guest Speaker was the Dux of the Class of 2008, Miss Danielle Hay, who shared with the audience her experiences and those of a fellow student of that year, Stacey Byrne. Stacey chose the VET pathway and then went to the University of WA (as did Danielle) to study Law. Both Danielle and Stacey are inspirational examples of what can be achieved when we back ourselves and work hard to make our dreams a reality.
The award winners are listed in this newsletter. Congratulations to each of them.
To all of the proud parents and family members who attended these events, thank you very much for your support also. The backing you show your child’s school means a great deal to us.

FENCING SUCCESS
Year 6 student, Matthew Aiton (pictured left), who is a member of the Ellenbrook Fencing Club finished third in the under 13s State Fencing Championship recently. Matthew fenced fantastically, moving from eighth at the last competition (which was his first) into the medals at this competition also defeating the boy that beat him last time in the process.
Matthew works so very hard at his fencing and this is a sensational result. He will finish the year in overall fifth place in the State!

Early in Term 3, our Year 4s in Room 5.4 started planning a recycled fashion show for their assembly. The students were excited and started bringing in egg cartons and old clothes and cardboard and newspaper and plastic bags and all sorts of other recyclable materials. When groups were formed and creating costumes had begun, there were so many materials to choose from it was very difficult to maintain a sense of direction. Eventually the students sorted out what each group was going to create and started refining
their ideas.
It took a while to work out that there was always an alternative way to get the effects that they needed and wanted. Plans were changed and changed some more as the children came across design problems and even failures. It took a whole term to design, plan, make, remake and repair all the costumes ready for the show. We had lots of help from some really creative and special mums – thank you. We couldn’t have done it without you.
We spent most of this week practising to make sure the children were ready for the day. We had some disasters with rehearsals along the way
but the students persevered and managed to put on a fantastic show of which they should be very proud. We had a special presentation session back in our classroom after assembly for the parents that helped us. We celebrated with juice boxes and cookies because…ROOM 5.4 WERE AWESOME!

Following the “Teachers versus Students” game at the end of Term 2, a few of the Year 6’s decided to start a netball tournament. The tournament consisted of sixteen games, two every Friday second break. There were four teams and each team was led by a teacher. The teachers were Ms Zorzut, Mr Hale, Miss Bettison and Mrs Marshall.
At the start of term students signed up to be a part of a team. We eventually decided that each Year 6 class would have their own team and the captain of their team would be their teacher. So the students in Miss Bettison’s class would be on her team, the students in Mr Hale’s class would be on his team and the students in Ms Zorzut’s class would be on her team. The extra students that wanted to play in the netball tournament would be on Mrs Marshall’s team.
During the game there were two umpires which were either two students or one student and a teacher. Students would record how many goals were scored during the games that were being played. Afterwards, two students would work out scores and percentages and determine who would be on the top of the ladder. Last term, the team that made their way to the top of the ladder and eventually won was 6.3, Ms Zorzut’s class!
During the games, we noticed how everyone was having a great time! We’re hoping to continue the tournament this term and have as much fun as the previous term. It has been a wonderful experience, playing with and against fellow peers, and seeing other student’s skills.

We have such a busy Term 4 ahead of us as the Year 10 and 11 students will be participating in Workplace Learning this term. We will also be finalising placements for off campus courses for 2019, in partnership with TAFE and various RTO’s. This ensures that our students can gain Pre-Apprenticeships and Certificate qualifications in their chosen fields, whilst still attending Bullsbrook College in Years 11 and 12. We are very proud of the range of opportunities we have sourced for our students in 2019, and are pleased that our students have been actively pursuing these courses. These courses are in addition to their completion of WACE here at Bullsbrook College.
These courses include Public Sector Traineeships, Pre- Apprenticeship courses in Electrotechnology, Heavy and Light Automotive, Plumbing, Building and Construction and Engineering. Other than pre-apprenticeship courses, we have Certificate Courses in Population Health (as a pathway into Nursing), Aviation (Cabin Crew), Education Support, Business Administration and Kitchen Operations. We are working with outside training organisations to ensure we meet the career pathway needs of our Senior School students. This has also meant inviting many agencies and guest speakers to our Work Readiness classes to deliver up to date information and help our students design smart career pathways.
We thank representatives from Building and Construction Training Group, Chamber of Minerals and Energy, Bendigo Bank, Worksafe, Edith Cowan University, Australian Defence Force, Australian Electoral Commission, Taxation Department and Red Frogs for visiting our Work Readiness classes this year.
Try a Trade also visited our school and those students in Year 10 who have expressed an interest in the Building and Construction industry were invited to take part in a trade exercise and a White Card course. This allowed 12 of our students to complete the much needed White Card accreditation, funded by the Building and Construction Training Group, who we now work closely with to provide further opportunities for our students.
WORK PLACEMENT
Year 11 students begin Work Placement on Monday October 29 for two weeks. We have placed 52 Year 11s at 52 worksites, and have been site checking each site over the last few weeks. Our students will also be visited by school staff whilst on placement. Many opportunities arise from Workplace Learning as students begin to network within their chosen fields.
Year 10s begin Work Placement on Monday November 26 for two weeks. As this is the first time Bullsbrook College has offered Work Placement to Year 10 students, we have been busily preparing 70 of our students for the workplace. They have worked on building career portfolios including writing strong application letters, piecing together their resume and practising good interview techniques. These lessons have also included safe work practices and career pathway development, to assist our students in mapping out there futures.
We wish all our students well for their upcoming placement, and hope they make some great connections and contacts with the world of work and reflect on their experience to fine tune their career plans.
