Newsletter YEAR 11 MARGARET RIVER CAMP HELD IN MAY

The Year 11 Outdoor Education and Year 11 Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation students enjoyed an amazing camp in Margaret River. Four days in Week 2 of Term 2 saw students take part in snorkelling at Busselton, Cowaramup Bay and Castle Rock beaches, fishing, abseiling 40 metres into a cave, hiking 7 kilometres of the Cape to Cape track and rock climbing the sea cliffs at Willyabrup. The students were faced with challenges and fears but all persisted. There was a real sense of camaraderie amongst the students as they encouraged one another to overcome some of the difficulties they faced. A big thank you to teachers organising and running the camp (Mr McPhail, Mrs McCarthy and Mr

Bettella) and also to Mr Claxon, a former teacher at the school, who assisted on the camp. We were very proud of the Year 11’s who gave all activities a go and made the experience of taking them on camp as wonderful as it was!

Newsletter CAREER DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Year 10

Students in Year 10 have been busy learning how to write application letters for employment, compiling a resume and developing strong interview techniques. We have addressed each of these skills over the last few weeks. Students will use these skills to create a career portfolio and participate in a formal ‘job’ interview with a panel of staff early in Term 3. We are committed to building work readiness at Bullsbrook College, and these real life skills and opportunities are vital for our young people. The students have embraced the program with such enthusiasm and interest. We look forward to continually upskilling our Year 10s as the year unfolds, in preparation for their work experience opportunity in Term 4.

Year 11

Students in Year 11 recently participated in a two week work placement to build their connections in the industry of their choice. We know how vital work experience is for our students, and are proud that we continue to offer this program at our school. We know that employers highly regard work experience on resumes and TAFE staff are requesting logbook evidence of work experience for entry into competitive courses. Well done to our Year 11 participants.

Year 12

Throughout the year a range of guest speakers visit our Year 12s during Workplace Learning lessons to deliver valuable information to assist our students as they transition from school to work. This term we have heard from;

The Australian Electoral Commission, Consumer Fair Trading and the Australian Taxation office.

Next term we will welcome presenters from the Defence Force, University Representatives, Bendigo Bank and Superannuation Funds.

Our Year 12s will also complete their final work placement throughout Weeks 2 and 3 of Term 3.

BIGGEST MORNING TEA HELD IN MAY

The Biggest Morning Tea was held on Thursday, May 30th and, thankfully the weather held out for us. It was a huge success, raising $1016.70 in total for the people who are most in need. Students and their parents enjoyed a fabulous morning tea provided by the amazing families in our college community. It was a pleasure to spend some time with so many of the parents who prepared the food and came along to support their children and the Cancer Council.

To accommodate the Secondary campus we held a morning tea on a separate day to raise more money for cancer research.

Newsletter YEAR 9 HASS EXCURSION

Year 9 students had a fantastic day visiting the Kanyana Wildlife Centre and John Forrest National Park in mid June. The field trip consolidated students’ understanding of animal and plant adaptations in ecology (Science) and the study of biomes and interconnections (HASS). Key topics were: diversity and uniqueness of Australian animals, the importance of their conservation and some of the human and natural impacts to our biodiversity. Despite the weather on the day the students displayed great interest, engagement and responsibility all day.

Some highlights were the Echidna (despite not being able to shoot his spikes) who was held close to students so they could see his backward facing feet and sealed pouch. The Tawny Frogmouth Owl, who showed his unique pose, camouflage and eating habits, and we had a special experience with the highly endangered Bilby currently being bred back from the brink of extinction. Students walked the old railway tunnel and saw some incredible views from the Darling Scarp to finish off the day.

Well done all students and staff for making a great day happen!

“I enjoyed the tunnel and the history connected to it.” Sharleze Bin Omar

“We saw a woylie, which is one of the most endangered animals in the world. They have a backward facing pouch, so when they dig their pouch and joeys don’t get full of dirt.” Keira Applegate

“In the Wildlife entre they have a Bilby breeding program to help the Bilby numbers go up and to help stabilize their future”. Kayla Applegate

Newsletter MDSA INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

CARNIVAL

On Friday 14 June, 30 students from Years 2 to 6 travelled to Gingin Golf Club to participate in the annual MDSA Interschool Cross Country Carnival. Students walked the course in their respective year groups with the help of host school Gingin District High School. Once familiar with the course, students were called up in their groups to compete against students from eight different schools.

While we did not leave with any trophies this year, we had a fantastic overall effort, with many students braving the rain and cold. Students were all positive and encouraging throughout the entire day, demonstrating excellent school spirit. Thank you to all the parents who came and supported the students and helped throughout the day, it’s always great to see.

MDSA INTERSCHOOL YEAR 6 WINTER CARNIVAL

On Friday 21st June, Bullsbrook College hosted the 2019 Year 6 Winter Carnival. We saw over 350 students from seven different schools participate in Volleyball, Soccer, Football and Netball.

Volleyball took part in the sports hall here at the college, where 9 teams either competed in a Division A or B competition. Bullsbrook entered two teams and both played extremely well. Our B grade team came in first place, with our A grade team coming second. The day had a great atmosphere with fun

and participation being the main focus. Thank you to Mrs Edwards for managing the team as well as Year 11 students, Skye Broughton, Lily Smith and Stephanie Dauwerse for being excellent coaches.

Soccer took place on the College oval, where a mixed team of Year 6 students displayed fantastic sportsmanship skills throughout the whole carnival. Team Bullsbrook played 5 games on the day finishing in fourth place. Thank you to Mr Bettella and his senior school students for managing, as well the amazing Giya Mtwale and Cameron Brady for their coaching and umpiring support.

Netball had two teams of Year 6 students in Division A and B competitions down at Pickett Park. On the day students were full of nerves but excited with anticipation about showing off their netball skills. Our Year 6’s demonstrated fair ball skills, exceptional teamwork and admirable sportsmanship. ‘A’ grade won 3 out of 6 games, with ‘B’ grade winning one game. A huge thank you to Year 11 students Sophie Papich, Zoe Parker, Stephanie Webber and Nicole Partridge who supported the Year 6s and took on the roles of coach/umpire and to Mrs Zorzut for all of her hard work overseeing the score sheets at the managers table.

Football took place at Pickett Park with seven schools competing for the trophy. The team were full of confidence and ready to get stuck straight into their first game. The whole team put in a big effort and finished in third place overall. Ms Paterson couldn’t speak more highly of all students, who demonstrated sincere sportsmanship and school pride. Thank you to Ms Paterson for giving up her free time to manage the team, as well as students Liam O’Connor, Chevy Butcher, Izak Davies and Nathaniel Jansen for their coaching and umpiring.

All students are to be commended for their sportsmanship and behaviour demonstrated throughout the day. A warm thanks to the Year 6 teachers, the Health and Physical Education department and Mrs Schmidt for running the medical tent. It was a pleasure to be able to see everyone involved participating in the spirit of the day.

Newsletter JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

On Wednesday 26th June, all students from Year 1 to Year 6 pulled on their jumping shoes and red shirts to celebrate our annual Jump Off Day. The day comprised students participating in a range of skipping tabloids to develop their skipping skills. It was a joy to see so many students happily taking part and being active on the day.

Congratulations to all students who participated. Together we raised a total of $5 400 for the Heart Foundation. As a result we have provided the Heart Foundation with much needed funds to assist with their research into Heart Disease.

A huge thank you goes to the Year 6 House Leaders and helpers who mentored students from Years 1 to 5 to develop their skipping skills during the tabloids. I was so proud to see such an amazing display of teamwork amongst peers.

Thank you for the parents that came to the Jump Off Day and helped set-up their child’s fundraising page.

Congratulations to the teachers, parents and students on a successful day!

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR ED EXCURSION

On Thursday 27 June, Mr Carpenteri, Mr Bettella and the Year 10 Outdoor Education students went on an excursion to 'The Hangout Indoor Rock Climbing Centre' in Bayswater, as part of their Outdoor Education course. Students had a very enjoyable and challenging day, climbing the walls and also competing in climbing races up the walls between each other and the teachers. It was a very rewarding excursion as students enjoyed themselves immensely and behaved well.
