Einführung / Introduction
DIE SCHABLONE THE TEmPLATE
The combined creative fields of theme groups list the essential colours of each individual theme. Highly ap-plication-oriented colour schemes can be developed with the help of the template. This works in a playful, experimental way for all colour-related terms represent-ed in this book.
The template has a black and a white side with good reason. Very bright shades can be better determined using the white template: it modulates the single light shades in a more nuanced manner. The black template, on the other hand, brings medium to dark colours more densely and more harmoniously together. It is not suit-ed for very bright colours because the contrast of the extremely strong bright and the dark blurs the nuances.
The template also makes possible the creation of col-ours that span a number of themes. Colour groups from the reproductions of the research study can also be “searched”. Frequently, this brings about surprising, creative and useful results.

HOTELS WITH LUXURY APPEAL: FROm THE LUXU-RIOUS TO THE EXPENSIVEThere is nothing better than being a member of a dem-ocratic civil society and living in a castle, if only spo-radically. Plenty of stucco on the ceilings, rooms with ceilings four and a half metres high, a freestanding bathtub with lion-paw feet, brocade in front of the three-metre high windows, tassels and cord edges on cushions and upholstery, as well as baroque, rococo or Empire armchairs that offer ample room for two peo-ple. Bordeaux-red fabric covers the walls. On the side-board stands a huge vase with fresh gladiolas.
At the table d’hôte, the guests come together in the evening in sober suits and elegant dresses; trouser suits are frowned upon, as are casual athlete’s uniforms with logos on their collars. Even if the great meal includes 14 to 20 people of various age groups and different nationalities, the evening will, thanks to skilful modera-tion by the host or hostess, be judged a success due to entertaining conversations and charming chats.
Of course the menu, the wines, the table decoration, the ambience and the gentle lighting, supported by lighted candles, should also contribute to making the evening unforgettable.
Small private hotels in France but also in England and Italy still cultivate this form of hospitality. Why do they have to remain an insider’s tip? Imitation is definitely in order. Quality of living is always also a question of extraordinary ambience, of exceptional guests and a dedicated hostess, but also of beautiful colours and col-ourful anecdotes.
Such small and intimate hotels also reveal themselves to be guarantors of informal understanding among na-tions because the guests are invited to participate in multi-national dinners. It is amusing when 16 people sit at a table with an joint verbal treasure of two to three dozen living languages, and have great conversations. There is always an interpreter translating from one lan-guage into another while the next one conveys another idiom. Impatience would not be appropriate, and nei-ther would be the certainty that one can exclude the possibility of a misunderstanding.

Gold, black, violet and pink and rose are pure luxury. Luxury depends on glamour and not necessarily on tangible splendour. Luxurious fashion does not call for pure gold but first and foremost for golden looks and glamorous opalescence.

Luxury is not necessary. Its non-existent affinity to real user value in particular makes it so desirable. The large black section acts as a stable statement of its power.
This is what colour combi-nations of outrageously expensive silk scarves often look like. One wears them as a trophy and as a conspicuous fluttering signal of recently acquired or recovered authority.
The drawing is not as necessary as the colours: a few rough lines and simple basic shapes from round to angular suffice.

The colour programme dispenses with surprises: it is suitable for the masses and thus tolerable and comprehensible for everybody. All shades that might possibly cause irritation, like brown, beige and yellow-green, are absent. The “in-between” colours lack an unambiguous ability to express value.

Metallic colours like brass, copper and gold as well as the primary colours red, blue and yellow and their derivatives have long been among to the preferred hotel colours all over the world.
The colour range is power-ful and radiates much of the authority required when giving directives. If a reception situation is designed with this colour scale, the guests will feel as if they are with Gloria Swanson or Prince Charles having afternoon tea.

Rooms designed in such colour schemes feature a high capacity for luxury. These shades call for perfect materials and products and value-preser-ving careful craftsmanship.

The exclusive imposes a ban on what we describe as “not belonging”. Being banned from participation is especially hard for those who insist on exclusiveness. The colour substance of this term ranges some-where between Bollywood and Hollywood.

The shades vie with each other in a power struggle. The contrariness and ambiguity are glaringly obvious. Attraction and rejection as a design model! Soot-black versus light yellow, orange-red and purple.
The colour range is ambi-tious and fashionable, but also traditional, baroque and trendy. The outrageous-ly expensive, funfair punk, new swank, and old dignity are united.
Vibrant, graphic signs stand for exclusivity. We are not surprised to recognise them.

Doing without luxury can be as excruciating as an overabundance of pink, splendour, pomp, purple, rosewood, powder, chocolates and plush. Looking closely at the adja-
cent 64-shade colour field, it becomes clear that the dark shades together with the bright, pure pastel hues form an equal community of feminine and masculine nuances. Sweet fruit and light blossom shades constitute a unit of splendour, elegance and captivating freshness, whereas the contrary colours are made up of martial black nuances, sophisticated purple and velvet shades, as well as regal shades of blue and gemstone colours.
And yet behind all colours lies an overt claim to power and importance. The Roman emperors wore purple, the French fleur-de-lis stands out resplendently against a blue
background, the Russian tsars loved green, and the Dutch court banks on orange because the Orange Order had a lot to do with Oranje. At the Spanish court under Philip II, there was only one shade: majestic black.

Frequently, too much light is unsuitable.
Concentrating on a few areas is more fitting. That way one not only flatters the person but also the colours and materi-als in the room.
It is not without good reason that bars are so sparsely lit: this transforms the modest, hardworking city dweller into a shadow-casting Spanish hidalgo, and the friendly woman next door into a femme fatale.
one has no choice but to love luxury hotels. This is where we find a space that gives us the freedom
to occasionally make a wonderful dream of the exceptional come true. Being surrounded by more space than is actually necessary is part of the wonderful world of abundance.
The play with light also has a great impact on the generously designed ambience. Many concentrated but gently flowing lights
constitute visual events whose enticing offerings invite you to linger. Warm light attracts people, whereas glaring light arouses their curiosity or repels them.

Mysterious but also exhaust-ed to morbid interpretations seem to have a sufficient level of interpretational sovereignty. The pompous or extremely precious is mostly not suspected behind the fascinating.
The chromatic colour sequence can be described as “elegant” and “fashion-able”, “extremely decora-tive” and “becoming”. Sobriety and tradition are relevant attendant aspects seem to take the place of pomp and showiness.

Whenever the colours reflect a high feel-good factor, they are predominantly warm-toned, mostly unmixed and sensually, animatingly beautiful. The impressions made by
the four colour ranges are similar because they are unified by a delicate, cautiously soft and mild foundation. The colours of the “snug” and the “nostalgic” vary regarding their degree of warmth: what we understand by “snug” is frequently reddish, whereas “nostalgic” is interpreted with deeper tones and with brown and grey-black colours.
Nonetheless, when underlining out fields covered by single terms, their independence catches one’s eye because they are nuanced more brightly or darkly, more purely or
cloudily. The profiling of a type of term frequently shows, especially when repeated, a very finely adjusted result.

Raum.

T he details are as important as the big picture. Radiating snugness requires warm shades of gold, tea and mint, which, regardless of whether they are viewed in clear light, bright sunlight or by a flickering open fire, have the ability to permit
complete relaxation. Every detail must be right, regardless whether it is the brass rails, the picture next to the headboard of the bed or the sand-coloured curtains.
T he essential elements when designing are successful combinations. Rooms are nothing other than landscapes in the
smallest of spaces. Both on the large and the small scale, they must offer visual axes of stimula-tion and easing, of animation and quiet. Hotel rooms in particular must provide a microcosm of snugness in a fairly confined space and yet combine cosy closeness with a far-reaching perspective.
a n upholstered and leather-covered head section of a bed suggests warmth and additionally generates feelings of security, of natural quality and melodious
acoustics. In the bathroom, large mirrors are the most important component; they also enlarge the room and give travellers the opportunity to look at themselves in more detail by affording them a little more leisure than usual ...

Kapitel 5 / Chapter 5
HOTELS FOR CONNOIS-SEURS AND BOHEMIANS: FROM WEIRD TO DISCREETVicki Baum wrote the famous novel “Grand Hotel”. It was made into a movie with a top-class cast.
Fifty years ago, grand hotels were the meeting places of high society. Their reputations preceded them as stately, international places where dramatic liaisons, impostures and historical events took place when secret service agents met grey eminences. They were places where famous film stars got to know industrial mag-

nates and impresarios met opera divas. In the movies of those days, gentlemen wore pencil moustaches and Borsalino hats, and they were very elegant. The ladies with tight-laced waistlines wore delicate veils in front of their faces and little feather hats. People still travelled on the “RMS Queen Elizabeth” or “RMS Queen Mary” from continent to continent, or by aeroplane with stops in Shannon and Newfoundland.
It is wonderful when hoteliers remember those days and do not consider “weird” or “nonconformist” to be insults, but incentives to re-stage the well-known. At a time when we divide the service world into areas of expertise, judge people to be “competent” or “incom-petent”, and become set on the idea that competence, in addition to sustainability and innovation, is one of the main markers of competence, we need not be at all surprised that the struggle to prove competence, as a sign of being “better” and “more diligent”, starts to bore us.
Hotels with a heart and soul, in touch with history or the future, which are “chic” or “unusual” or “iconic”, but also “turbulent” and “eccentric”: that is where I want to be. Every now and then, one still encounters connoisseurs’
options. These come from the heart, intuition and ex-perience; they help to make a decision as to where I want to rest my weary head and where I will refresh my hungry and thirsty body. They are more trustworthy than any tourist guidebook or glossy magazine.
The pages that follow will give examples of what ho-tels with that special image might look like, and which forms, products and interiors are crucial. We will see that accentuations can be just as conducive in creating an “inspiring and exciting” design, and that the “witty”, the “charming” and the very “discreet” has a stimulat-ing effect.
The work of designers always revolves around the same question: “How can one develop the sense of being touched?” Whenever colours, surfaces, shapes, structures, dimensions, light and shadow complement each other and harmonise, then we feel at ease.
