Lesson 1 – True or False? Read the poem on p2 of the booklet and identify whether these statements
are true or false.
Stretch: Correct any false statements so they become true.
1. Eagles are very strong creatures.

3. In the poem, the poet describes the eagles straight hands.

In this poem, the writer is looking at a _ _ _ _ _ . The poet is asking what kind of

also famous for illustrating many of his poems. He even painted a scene from
A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Today, he is known just as much for his
fascinating paintings as he is for his poems.

Lesson 4.2 Exercise 1 RULE: When you put actions in the past simple, you say what happened, not
what was happening.
Put the following sentences into the past simple. Cross out the relevant
word(s) and replace them with a word from the box.
1. The event was starting at 9.30am.
2. Ms. Davis was motioning for the class to start writing.
3. They were wanting to see the film tomorrow.
4. The frog was turning into a prince.
5. Celebrations were happening all over town.

Each of these sentences contains a subject and the main action they are
doing. The writer has forgotten to put some of the capital letters and full stops
in.

Faduma and her mum decided to go shopping. They took the bus into
town they started walking around the shops. Faduma saw a dress she loved
her mum thought it looked very elegant on Faduma she said she would buy it
for her she rummaged in her bag. She couldn’t find her purse she sighed she
had left it in the kitchen

In this poem, the writer is looking at a tiger . The poet is asking what kind of person
could design the animal, and how they could make such a fearsome creature! The
poem was written in 1794 (after Shakespeare and before Dickens) by William Blake.

Use this model paragraph to check your work:
Hesketh makes the owl seem dangerous as she describes how powerful it is.
This can be seen when the owl is described as ‘striking silent as frost’.
Striking means hitting something or appearing beautiful. This verb could be
describing how intense an owl’s eyes are as they stare at things but it could also
describe how an owl might attack its prey. By comparing it to frost, this metaphor
allows the reader to imagine how threatening it must be as coldness is also
associated with being heartless. Frost can creep up on things slowly just like the owl
so it successfully kills its victims who do not see him approaching.
