Let Him Be

LET HIM BE

In a camcorder recently purchased at a flea market by his father, Tim Bennett, a documentary filmmaker discovers a "lost"tape, andcomes face-to-face with footage that could potentially shake the world. On this shaky homevideo, Tim is stunned tosee an old man who bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the greatest icons of the 20th Century, a man whose "assassination" rocked the world some twenty years earlier.

Determined to confirm first-hand that history has deceived us, Tim persuades a skeptical and reluctant Kathleen, to take a short trip to discover the origins of the tape. Armed with a movie camera and an array of surveillance equipment Tim plans to document their journey in his quest to uncover the truth.

The search is a series of dead ends until they walk into a small general store. When a woman and her daughter enter the store Tim recognizes them from the home movie footage. Following them out into the car park, he pretends he is interviewing locals for a show on the area and wants to ask her some general questions. At first happy to oblige, she quickly becomes suspicious when he starts to ask personal questions about the man she is dating, and she cuts the interview short. Tim now believes that he is on to something, but Kathleen is still far from convinced.

Later, a man comes into the shop sounding like hes just arrived from Liverpool but leaves before Tim can speak to him. Tim questions the shopkeeper who reveals his name is Graham and that he lives near by with his friend Noel, who, now she comes to think of it, bears a resemblance to the man in Tims photo. The shopkeeper gives them directions to their farmhouse and they head out, hot on the trail of what Tim feels could be the discovery of the decade. Making a wrong turn, they instead come across an eccentric neighbor who reveals some interesting facts, most significant of for Tim is that Noel has a band! Tims excitement mounts as he feels the clues are beginning to add up.

After tracking down and interviewing the members of Noels band who provide Tim with information that he wants so badly to believe to prove his suspicions, he is ready to meet the man. The two young filmmakers locate the right farmhouse but Tim is taken completely off guard by the hostile reception from Graham who tells them in no uncertain terms to leave and slams the door in their face. Frustrated he persuades Kathleen to give the quest a few extra days. Tim is now completely obsessed with his expose, and what it could mean to the world. Tim decides to break into Noels farmhouse and plant his surveillance equipment. Kathleen voices her concerns about the morality and the legality of what they are doing. Later in town after planting the spy cameras, Kathleen tries to pay for some groceries and finds out that Tim has maxed out her credit card to pay for the surveillance equipment. Its the final straw for her, they argue and upset she orders him to stop the car, and she gets out.

That evening when Kathleen returns, she reveals that she was picked up by Graham and Noel and has spent the day with them. Tim is stunned especially when she presents him with the first tape from the surveillance camera he hid in their barn. Tim is mesmerized by what he sees.

Convinced that he is witnessing a now 67-year-old John Lennon, he spends his days holed up in the motel room glued to the screen. Kathleen spends her time getting to know Graham and Noel at the farm. Her conflict about the spying is becoming more apparent but when she tells Tim that Noel has asked her to tape his band playing for his girlfriends daughters birthday, he is ecstatic. Its short lived when Noels girlfriend appears at their motel distraught, accusing Kathleen of coming between her and Noel. Kathleen fervently denies this and Tim dismisses her accusations as jealous paranoia.

On the night of the party, Tim sneaks up to house and spies on the band from a window transfixed by what he believes is a performance by one of the worlds greatest musicians. Back at the hotel, he tells Kathleen hes ready to show the footage to the world but she persuades him that they need to be 100% sure and the only way to do that is see if Noel has bullet wounds on his back. Kathleen volunteers to find out by staying the night at the farmhouse and trying to accidentally walk in on Noel with his shirt off.

The next morning, she returns, and tells him its not him. Tim is devastated as they pack up and return to the city. On the ride home Kathleen is very quiet and Tim feels the strain between them. Several days later, Kathleen is gone taking all her belongings with her. Tim knows she has returned to the farmhouse but he cannot bring himself to face it. Eventually he heads up there, only find it deserted.

Tim believes that he was right all along but at the expense of losing the woman who meant the world to him.
