Let Us Pray—Prayers of the Faithful

• For our Church, that it be a hopeful sign of God’s presence in our midst. We pray to the Lord.

• For an easing of tensions between and within nations: that God will open new paths for communication so they may work together to promote justice and peace. We pray to the Lord.

• For deeper respect and appreciation for creation: that we may be good stewards of the earth that God has provided for us. We pray to the Lord.

• For all who are fighting the Coronavirus: may God strengthen caregivers, inspire researchers, and guide those who will be distributing the vaccine. We pray to the Lord.

• For all who are experiencing deep loneliness: that God will sustain them, help them be aware of the blessings in their lives, and help us to accompany them. We pray to the Lord.

• For all who feel entrapped by life, particularly those with addictions or in abusive situations: may they experience hope and freedom through God’s presence and love. We pray to the Lord.

• For the gift of hope. May it illuminate our hearts and enlarge our vision so that we recognize our kinship with all the people of the world. We pray to the Lord.

• For all who are ill; that God will ease their pain, and restore them to their communities of family and friends. We pray for: Jack Tipton, Michael Rogers, Blanche Kolojay, Theresa Matiakis, Concepcion Pangilinan, Betty Anne Tomney, Stella Hollman, Kathleen Kroeger, Oma Kloeble. We pray to the Lord.

• For all who have died, especially for: Helen Bitz, Ray Michaud, Richard Shanner, Maximilian Igwe. We pray to the Lord.

As Catholics, we seek healing and strength in the Eucharist. Through our parish Ministry of Care we bring communion to those who cannot be with us for Mass, whether temporarily or on an ongoing basis. Ministry of Care staff and volunteers will gladly make a home visit to the sick, the lonely and the homebound. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Spiritual Communion Prayer

“My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart ...

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You, Amen.”

CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS

RCIA is being offered this year virtually. They are meeting Wednesday evenings at 7:00 via Zoom. For further information please contact Arch McKay at [email protected] or [email protected] .

MARRIAGE PREPARATION This program is intended not only for engaged couples but also for couples considering engagement and marriage. For information and to register for the next session contact Nicole Gursky at 306 229-0384 or email [email protected].

INFANT BAPTISM

If you have had a child in the past few months and would like him/her to be baptized, or are expecting a baby I would love to hear from you! We were not baptizing babies for a few months but we are able to do so once

again. We are baptizing children one family at a time. If this is not your first child and you have attended baptism prep sessions in the past couple of years you don’t need to take prep again. If this is your first child please call and we can arrange for prep sessions and the celebration. Please contact Sharon at 306-374-1425 or email [email protected].

CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF CHILDREN

In the past couple of years we have had inquiries from parents of a number of children who have not been baptized and now the child is showing a keen interest in receiving the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion). Is this happening in your home too?

We, at Holy Spirit Parish, are trying to meet this need and have created a process for children 8 to 16 years who would like to explore the possibility of being baptized and receive the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion.

I would love to talk with you and your child if she/he has been questioning. I so look forward to telling you more about this encouraging and gratifying process. Please either call or email me at [email protected] or 306-374-1425.

FAMILY ADVENT TRADITIONS

At this time of year, I often hear people telling others about celebrated traditions that focus on Christmas. We somehow skip over Advent and jump right into Christmas. This year, I challenge your families to start the Advent season by adopting or developing Advent Traditions. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Advent Wreath: One of the most popular ways to celebrate Advent is with an Advent wreath or Advent candleholders. Four candles (three purple and one pink), are used to count down the weeks until Christmas. Each Sunday of Advent one of the candles is lit and special prayers are said. Each Sunday of Advent has a particular theme leading up to the birth of Christ. 2. Advent Dinners: Make the Sundays of Advent into something special. Prepare a nice dinner for your family. This would be a great time to light the candles on your Advent wreath and invite all to join in the special prayers for that week. 3. Prepare Seasonal Food: Many historically Catholic countries have traditions of preparing food that goes with the liturgical seasons, especially Advent and Christmas. Catholic bloggers are doing a great job of making these traditions more popular for all Catholics. Come up with something crea-tive yourself or find inspiration on an Advent Ideas Pinterest Board. 4. Advent Devotional Reading: There are lots of great Advent books that take you deeper into the profound theology of Advent. God comes to us as a Child, and this is amazing to think about! Going through each day with devotional reading is one of the best ways to spiritually prepare yourself for Christmas, the birth of the King of Kings. 5. Special Prayers: Adopt special prayers during the Advent season. You can often find them in Advent devotional books. 6. Advent Calendars: Another popular way to celebrate the Advent season, especially popular with children, is the Advent calendar. Counting down the days to Christmas helps children to anticipate patiently and to focus on waiting for the baby Jesus to be born. You can purchase one, or make one as a fun craft time for kids. 7. Advent Music: Make your own playlist of music appropriate for Advent which anticipates Christ’s birth.

8. Nativity Scenes: Nativity sets are a classic tradition and are great to display during the Advent season. To make the display especially poign-ant, wait until Christmas Eve to place the Baby Jesus into the scene. The Vatican has a neat tradition of the Holy Father blessing the Baby Jesus from family nativity scenes, called Bambinelli Sunday. This takes place on the third Sunday of Advent—Gaudete Sunday. Perhaps you could ask your parish priest to bless your Baby Jesus figure!

But it doesn’t end here! Next week there will be a few more ideas...to be continued!

Act of Contrition (alternate form)

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,

I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.

I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever

leads me to sin.

are doing all the things that will keep us ready to receive Jesus when he comes again. Talk to your family about how you are doing in attending to your spiritual life as a family. Recommit yourselves to praying daily, reading Scripture, and staying faithful to God’s commandments. Pray together that through this Advent season your family will be more prepared to receive Jesus when he comes again.

God of Love,

Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us.

He is a sign of your love.

Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent,

As we wait and prepare for his coming.

Sunday, Dec 06, 2020SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENTBegin at the endBeginnings are really the Act II of endings. That’s why we hearso much Apocalypse in the early Advent readings. Something hasto give way for the new thing to arrive. In order to move into thenew house, you have to leave the old one. That goes for the life ofthe world to come, as well. So when John the Baptist summonsus to prepare the Lord’s way, he simultaneously obliges us torepent our former way. Consider what obstacles need to “passaway” to “make straight” the path of the Christ child’s arrival intoyour heart.

Tuesday, Dec 08, 2020SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGINMARY (PATRONAL FEAST DAY OF THE USA)Original graceThe Immaculate Conception is so key to Catholic consciousness,it’s hard to believe it hasn’t been around forever. The teaching—that Mary was born without original sin—was in fact opposed byscholarly saints like Anselm, Aquinas, Bernard, and Bonaventure. They insisted that, because sin entered the world through Adamand Eve, Mary would need salvation as much as the rest of us.But the Council of Trent concluded that Mary had been spared, and popular piety began to revere her Immaculate Conception. The significance? Perhaps, as theologian Elizabeth Johnsoneloquently points out, it’s that “grace is more original than sin.”
