Adjourned: 7:29pm From the Library Committee—

This month I asked Rue Chagoll about his background and what he recommends in the way of training dogs. Here is his response:

"I got hooked on competitive obedience training in the late 80's when I lived in Kansas City. A pet class instructor told me about an obedience trial that might be fun to attend as a spectator. I took my dog, and watched in utter fascination. I plainly remember leaning over to my pal and saying “I think we can do this, too!” And we did. A year later, competing in a Novice A class of nearly 50 dogs (that's right, in those days the classes were huge) we won first place with a score of 197½. What a thrill that was! And all these years and training partners later, it's still a thrill to have a successful ring outing.

Personally, I've only trained Golden Retrievers. My last two partners have been rescued Goldens, and have been the most challenging. The scores we've achieved haven't been as great as with earlier dogs selected for suitability to obedience, but I learned to define success with each dog as achieving our very best. And these two have probably taught me the most about training and handling. I like to think I've trained many other breeds as well, at least indirectly, through the many pet and competition classes I've taught for IDTC. I've many pals among the IDTC canine population, who know me as the perpetual soft touch for a treat, and whose owners refer to me as "Uncle Pez."

Page 4: Letter from the President - Ithaca Dog Training Club · To be successful, training must always be fun – for both trainer and dog. One way to achieve this is to make sessions short

I've competed in obedience, rally obedience, retriever hunt tests, and dabbled a bit in agility until stymied by personal mobility issues (bad hips and knees). I consider competition obedience my favorite and believe it to be the best foundation for pursuits in any other performance venue. Training for hunt tests was also great fun. I was fascinated to watch my “pet” Goldens morph into different characters at the sight of a bird and sound of a shotgun.

Had bad hips and knees not interfered I would have pursued an AKC obedience judging license. Nevertheless, I've enjoyed judging dozens and dozens of matches over the years. Every title my dogs have earned has been a source of great pride, recognition of the teamwork we invested and special bonds we developed. The Utility class in obedience I find to be the most fun, as well as the most challenging. Earning the UD title is reason to be particularly proud. One additional pleasure my dogs have given me is the opportunity to write about dogs, which I began about twenty years ago and continue presently. I take pride in the national awards I've received for those endeavors. When I wrote a regular dog column for the Ithaca Journal a few years back it took a while to get used to folks stopping me in Wegmans and other places to comment and compliment my writing.

To be successful, training must always be fun – for both trainer and dog. One way to achieve this is to make sessions short (10-15 minutes) and frequent (2-3 times per week) and to include play. You don't always need a big yard or facility; effective training can occur in the space of your kitchen. If you have a particular problem, or hit a roadblock, don't be shy about consulting an experienced and successful trainer. I'm always pleased to lend assistance, remembering those who have helped and continue to guide me along the way. Jane Jackson, one of the highly successful trainers I admire most (and whom I've paid for private instruction) is also always willing to dispense free advice and training suggestions on specific issues. It's gratifying to know Jane's more interested in my success than her personal remuneration.

The very best training resource available in my opinion is a book published probably twenty years ago, “Competition Obedience: A Balancing Act” (Byron & Yunck) that's already available in our library. It's a classic. While “fad” methods come and go, the concepts and training approaches contained are as timely and valid today as they were when first published. An excellent companion resource, for serious trainers, is “Success is In the Proofing” by Debby Quigley & Judy Ramsey. I think it's only available now as a PDF download, but at a very reasonable price ($9.95). Visit debbyquigley.com to order. I have it with me at all times on my iPhone. Another very useful resource for trainers at all levels are the materials (written, on DVDs, and on her website) available from Connie Cleveland, another of my most admired trainers. Her website is https://www.dogtrainersworkshop.com/. She also has a free blog that you can sign up for on her website."

Note from the librarian: The library will soon have a set of Connie Cleveland Dog Training DVDs, recommended above, which cover every aspect of Dog Obedience training!

Happy Reading and Viewing!

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR PARTICIPANTS IN THE TEMPERAMENT EVALUATION PROGRAM

1. The ATTS Temperament Evaluation measures the dog's strength of response to arrive at the temperament baseline.

2. Dogs of at least 18 months of age, either pure-bred or neutered or spayed mixed-breeds, are eligible to participate. Non-neutered and non-spayed mixed-breeds may also participate but will not receive a certificate or a Temperament Title.

3. Owners of eligible dogs, which pass the test requirements and are officially verified by ATTS, will be awarded an ATTS

Temperament Title Certificate showing the dog's TT number with breed designation. This title may be listed after the dog's name.

4. The combined findings of the Chief Tester and the two Testers at the test are binding and final.

5. To promote uninfluenced, fair and uniform testing of all dogs, only one dog and one handler will be allowed in the test area

during testing. Those who do not adhere to the A TTS Chief Tester's instructions may be denied participation without refund or may risk having their evaluation process cancelled without refund.

6. In compliance with changes in ATTS regulations, male dogs and bitches are no longer required to be tested separately, but

will be followed by bitches in season. Bitches in season should not be in or near the testing area prior to being tested.

7. Taking of photos/videos is encouraged but must not interfere with the testing.

8. Smoking and consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the testing area.

9. Dogs deemed unacceptable for testing for reason of temperament (uncontrollable, overly aggressive, extremely fearful, etc.), health, poor appearance, handicap or advanced pregnancy may not participate.

10. A dog failing one or more of the ten subtests is considered as failing the evaluation. A subtest is failed when a dog shows

unprovoked aggression, obvious avoidance, or panic without recovery; the test may be terminated immediately without refund. A dog may be retested after a five-month waiting period (full entry fee required).
