Premier Ministre du Canada Bureau du Premier Ministre 80, rue Wellington Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2 Monsieur le Premier Ministre, Nous soussignés, membres de la profession juridique et du monde universitaire duCanada, déplorons les insinuations, sans fondement et sans précédent, du Premier ministre canadien à l’effet que la Juge-‐en-‐chef de notre pays se serait conduite de manière incorrecte. Une magistrature indépendante est vitale pour toute démocratie. C’est un élément fondamental de l’ordre constitutionnel canadien et de la règle de droit. Attaquer l’intégrité de la magistrature, y compris par des critiques personnelles adressées publiquement à la Juge-‐en-‐chef, constitue une tentative de saboter l’indépendance judiciaire. Nous voulons affirmer notre appui à l’indépendance de la Juge-‐en-‐chef et de la Cour suprême du Canada. Nous en appelons au Premier ministre pour qu’il clarifie ses déclarations publiques et qu’il dissipe toute impression que la Juge-‐en-‐chef aurait agi de manière incorrecte.

Prime Minister of Canada Office of the Prime Minister 80 Wellington Street Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2 Dear Prime Minister: We, the undersigned members of the Canadian legal profession and legal academy, deplore the unprecedented and baseless insinuation by the Prime Minister of Canada that the Chief Justice engaged in improper conduct. An independent judiciary is vital to the health of any democracy and a foundational tenet of Canada's constitutional order and the rule of law. Impugning the integrity of the judiciary, including through public and personal criticism of the Chief Justice, represents an attempt to subvert that judicial independence. We affirm our support for the independence of the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court of Canada. We call on the Prime Minister to clarify his public statements in order to remove any impression that the Chief Justice behaved improperly.
