This placement has helped to prepare me for the workplace

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Student Comment: “Learned how to use different note taking software. Feel more confident in my hands skills especially nail surgery” “Has helped me to gain experience on how different health boards operate as it is slightly different.” “It has really prepared me for the workplace as you had the opportunity to run your own clinic, however you knew you were fully supported if you had any problems.” “This placement has been fantastic. All tutors have been unbelievably helpful and attentive to all my needs. All tutors I treated under the supervision of were amazing and have helped my confidence a great deal when it comes to treating and my knowledge base. Having said this, I have spent more time in clinic than a lot of my peers and so I am now left at a finical disadvantage due to this. This placement should be done during term time to avoid this.” “Gave a good insight into the flow of the clinic” “It has given me a lot more exposure to what comes into a community clinic and has helped improve my confidence.” “Gives us an understanding of the real working world as opposed to QUEH where its an educational environment. also feels less pressured in external placement which allows for better thought processes and hence better outcomes.” “Loved it. Was great to get patients all day and enjoy being in a busy full clinic.” “Time management, more exposure to patients, undertaking complete nail surgery procedure including LA on the one patient.” “I have absolutely loved my placement. I can not thank the staff I have had the opportunity to work alongside enough for the opportunity and progression they have allowed me over the last 2 weeks.” “It was good to see what clinics are like outwith the QEUH.” “This placement has prepared me as it has given me experience of working in the community in a variety of clinics and has helped me to improve my time management. It has also been very helpful working as part of a team and I have been able to utilise trakcare to carry out referrals etc.” “Placement did not tend to have clinics dealing with one specific thing. Every day there was a really varied caseload.” “This placement has allowed me to improve my speed when treating patients.” “Having the chance to do domicillary visits allows you to get the experience of going into an individuals home and adapting to the area you're working in.” “Treating patients within a certain time period” “Showed a wide variety of area of podiatry. All staff very friendly and enthusiastic.” “exposure to different clinical settings” “Provided me with the opportunity to work on my time management skills and improve my clinical skills.” “Has helped with gaining confidence in skill set and working in the work environment. Gained confidence in being able to work to time restraints as in QEUH patients take longer due to checks and questions surrounding patient.” “I feel it has prepared me for the work place as it has allowed me an insight as to how things are run in community as oppose to the teaching clinical setting therefor giving me more realistic expectations.” “I was exposed to a wide variety of different patients and conditions and was shown other methods of practice not used within the university clinic”

Presentation Notes
Student Comment : “Quicker and efficient skills and techniques improved” “Having the 30 minutes with a patient has helped speed up my skills and able to gather relevant information in the patients medical history prior to treatment”# “I feel that my speed has increased during the course of the placement, I felt more confident while treating patients due to the support given by all clinicians at Clydebank.” “Due to more exposure to patients and having a set time limit, it's enabled me to speed up my treatments while maintaining a high standard of work” “I prove technique especially in terms of dressings and callous reduction” “It has allowed me to improve my skills and confidence which has given me the opportunity to work more efficiently.” “trying to make sure we are seeing each patient on time makes us work faster” “Getting to the point and the problem. Yes being aware of all the other health links and conditions and the meds and how that all impacts and may increase the risk - but it was refreshing to deal with lots of different patients.” “Volume of patients to be seen in clinic. Trust from staff has helped my Podiatry confidence grow.” “I was given the opportunity on a few occasions to run the clinics as they had been set via trak care and only required checks from my practice educators, I was allowed to manage my caseload and timing well to help me progress practically.” “Most review clinics were not new patients so little assessment was nessessary beyond history taking. The clinics allowed more practice with more patients then we get in the QEUH.” “It has positively improved my speed and time management when treating and assessing patients.” “I often treated over 8 patients per day and got the opportunity to observe treatments.” “While doing assessments is important it is not as rigorous outside of the QEUH” “I didn't spend time doing unnecessary assessments” “See how long treatment takes without various checks and questioning from clinical teachers.” “Busy clinics allowed me to increase the my clinical skills and speed” “Increase in the number of patient enhances your skills.” “Working to appointment slots and having 8+ patients a day.” “Having access to patients notes detailing their medical history and medications therefor not having to spend as much time taking a medical history and not having to wait for various checks throughout treatment.” “Due to shorter patient appointment times I wad required to complete treatments in a shorter time frame than I was previously used to”

Would you recommend the block placement is continued in future years of the programme?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Student Comment : “I would continue staff are friendly” “I would continue the placement as it has been great to meet members of the team and get to work in the different clinics.” “The placement has been the best way to experience what we will see day-to-day in podiatry, it's not just treating patients there is so much more involved, which was helpful to see” “It is very helpful. But would be more beneficial during term time” “Good experience getting patient contact” “It is a great experience. I feel more confident in my clinical ability and knowledge.” “I think we need to have more experience like this. We are in the QEUH clinic too much. It almost feels like we are fighting over patients in there, too much time allowed for each patient in the QEUH - this placement has been so valuable in getting my clinical skills up to the level they should be.” “Staff are helpful, supportive and informative. Very inclusive placement with a huge scope of practice exposure.” “I would continue the placement without a doubt for the coming years as it has helped with my clinical skills, knowledge and confidence, but I wish it had been longer, even by 1 week to so.” “It is good to see Podiatry out with the QEUH. The independence of having your own patients helps build confidence” “Personally I have found this placement very beneficial which has helped improve my clinical skills, knowledge and also time management.” “This is a very interesting placement. The podiatrist must be able to treat everyone who needs them because there are no specialist clinics for high risk etc. It means I got the opportunity to treat a great variety of patients.” “It is essential for aiding confidence building when treating patients and becoming part of a team.” “This placement provided me with a variety of clinics and provided me with plenty of opportunities to get hands on and learn.” “I think the block placement is great but it was too close after exams that I was exhausted” “Good amount of time to get a taste of post graduation working. Good opportunity to work in a different health board.” “I would continue the placement as it allows the students to have a feel for what podiatry is like outside of a clinic designed for students” “Allows study to see podiatry in a working environment and encounter real world scenarios providing valuable experience.” “A great opportunity to work in a clinic and also as part of a team.” “I would continue the placement as I found it beneficial to experience podiatry in a community setting.” “Great exposure in relation to what will be faced in future employment”

The competency record was easy to complete?

The competency record was useful for tracking my development over the duration of the placement.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Student Comments: How to improve competency record: “I think it was useful to have the competency record for practice educator comments.” “It doesn't need to be so long” “None” “Having now completed my placement and my competency record, It would be better for more space for feedback per week and a comparison on improvements from one week to the following” “Placement diary was easy to use and understand, no changes needed” “Involvement of a variety of clinics - possibly domiciliary visits.” “None” “A better lay out of the competency record, without my added notes, a lecturer or mentor would be unable to look at the record and see what three attempts (type of patient and treatment) i was evaluating.” “Daily feedback as oppose to weekly.” “Ensure this is filled out by the mentor appropriately each week and have someone else in place to do so if this is not possible.”

The weekly sessions with my mentor were useful.

Any suggestions on how to improve the block placement?• The block placement was amazing I couldn't fault it, the only suggestion I would make is

maybe including DOMs? However I understand that it's not always possible as you are going to houses etc.

• The placement should take place during term time.• Less placement sites within one centre as was quite daunting being in a new health centre

every day and getting used to new surroundings and equipment storage which did take up time.

• Longer block placement please• It would definitely help improve confidence and experience if under some supervision

students could take part in nail surgery and or wound care rather than all being shadowing

Page 20: Level 3 Podiatry Block Placement 2018/19...Level 3 Podiatry Block Placement 2018/19 Student Feedback for NHS Scotland 2018/19 Student Placement NHS Scotland Number of students / Number

Any suggestions on how to improve the block placement? (Cont)• Domiciliary visits would have been helpful to have been included in my placement rota.• It was planned that I shadow the orthotist but that fell through. I think that would have been

interesting and useful.• More variety in types of clinics seen, was a lot of routine treatment that I undertook.• I would have liked to have seen the joint foot clinic however it was cancelled so this was

unavoidable.• None. Hands-on experience. Looked to forward to it each day.• A better weekly plan for clinics as a few days there was confusion about what the students

were doing• Exposure to multidisciplinary team and more exposure to high risk patients.

Page 21: Level 3 Podiatry Block Placement 2018/19...Level 3 Podiatry Block Placement 2018/19 Student Feedback for NHS Scotland 2018/19 Student Placement NHS Scotland Number of students / Number

Any suggestions on how to improve the block placement? (Cont)• Consistency between all students attending the same amount of days and hours should be

implemented (i.e. some students getting days off and half days and not having to treat many patients compared to others such as myself who had to attend each and every day even when my fellow student was allowed to go home early one day).

• Ensuring lunch breaks are applied at all times (i missed out on a lunch break one day and worked non-stop from 8.45 until 4pm without a single thing to eat or any break from the setting, which I wasn't even getting paid for as it was a placement).

Presentation Notes
Student comments: “We never had academic staff visit. Email was sent however” “Because the clinics were busy it was decided the mid placement visit was over the phone, we were fully supported the full time we were there anyway which I why I don't see a need for it.” “It was useful but I had other tutors on placement more and it was more useful there feedback as they had been tutoring me throughout the process” “Able to highlight improvements/ what was going well” “It was good just to check in and feel supported” “lecturer emailed over - she welcomed feedback and asked us to let her know if we needed any help - all was fine but it was nice to know who to contact should I need to.” “If there were any issues with the placement the phone call would have been more useful but it was nice to still have support available if needed.” “Did not have a mid placement visit.” “I was emailed to ensure that I was managing well with my placement. This was helpful for me as it was a good reminder that academic staff are there when needed with any concerns.” “We never got a visit but an on-site practice educator took on the role of academic advisor and I had a couple useful meetings with them, one at the end of each week.” “Our mid-placement visit was carried out via phone with my clinical mentor and students were emailed to give feedback. There were no issues which I needed help with and no problems to be followed up.”
