Editor’s note...

Dear Reader, “I detest racialism, because I regard it as a barbaric thing, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.” - Nelson MandelaWelcome to 2014 a very Happy New Year to you, may you receive the Blessings needed at this time. Living in a multi-cultural society in the East End of London, may not give you an immediate feeling of being treated differently because of the colour of your skin. But there is evidence to suggest racism is very much alive within our neighbourhood. A subject often avoided as people don’t like to be involved at either end of the spectrum. The recent death of Nelson Mandela has given people the opportunity to discuss this topic quite openly. This issue is jam packed with great articles and the What’s on p20 and p21 has some fabulous events for pretty much everyone to participate in. As always the information is checked but it is always good to check with the organisers whenever possible for any changes.A big thank you to you all for continuing to support Leyton Life, through reading, stocking, and advertising. Should you have any comments, suggestions or any other contributions please write in with these. This is an independent magazine for the community, so use it to your advantage! So if you want to send a contribution in for the next issue, regarding aspects of racism, homelessness and modern slavery in the UK please do so by 7th of February. More interesting quotes by Nelson Mandela p23 do take time to read and reflect.

Take Care, Yasmin Allen

After losing 2 1/2 stone and being nominated for a slimming competition, the only thing that’s big about Cher Sadou nowadays is her beaming smile.

Cher lost weight with her local Slimming World group in Leyton and has dropped from 12 stone 2lbs to 9 stone 7lbs in just 8 1/2 months. And her transformation hasn’t gone unrecognised as Cher has just been nominated for the Leyton’s group’s Woman of the Year 2013.

Cher joined Slimming World in November 2012 after becoming i n c r e a s i n g l y unhappy with her size. She says: “I started to put on weight because of comfort eating and losing my job. I tried lots of different diets but they usually left me

feeling hungry and miserable. Slimming World is completely different, I never have to go hungry and after losing 2 1/2 stone I’m the happiest I’ve been in years!”

The 45 year-old started following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is based on satisfying even the largest of appetites so slimmers never feel deprived or hungry. Now, Cher fills up on everyday foods like fruit and veg, lean meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, rice and pulses without having to weigh or measure them because they’re all filling yet naturally low in calories and fat.

She says: “My family and friends are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight. I cook for them now and they can’t believe it’s all healthy food because it tastes so good, I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club – they don’t know what to expect. But from the minute I walked into Slimming World, the support I’ve received from my Consultant Sarah Andrews and the rest of the group has been brilliant,” adds Cher. “I never dreamt I could achieve so much. I’ve gone from a size 18 to a 10 and it’s made such a huge difference – it’s changed my life.

Sarah Andrews, who runs the Leyton group, says: “I’m so proud of Cher. Not only does she look fabulous, she’s improved her health and is bursting with energy. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women in Leyton to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help, but I think Cher shows just what’s possible when you do.”

The Leyton Slimming World group is held every Thursday at 7.30pm at All Saints Church, Melbourne Road, Off Capworth Street, E10. To join or find out more call Sarah Andrews on 07958646942

“There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark

moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

“A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.”

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more

naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

“Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”
