In some Christian sectors there is considerable unease about the role and purpose of science in society. It is not at all unusual to hear such questions as: Are science and religion in conflict or do they compliment each other? Isn’t the origin of the universe contradicted by the early chapters of Genesis? Does the universe need a God to start it at all? How do we understand the foundational Christian doctrines about God and humanity in the light of science? Is embryonic stem-cell research acceptable? More broadly, how are ethical issues raised by science to be handled? With regard to the relationship between science and faith, there are many people who imagine that the two are incompatible. There are some who demand that they should be kept as far apart as possible, whilst others argue that to prise science and faith apart is to rob ourselves of the joy of investigating the amazing complexity and ingenuity of a world that is God’s gift to human beings. This conference aims to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between science and faith in today’s complex and fast- paced world. Nearly all who are involved in Christian ministry face many questions about science and religion during the course of their pastoral work. There are many scientists too who are beginning to recognise the presence of mystery and a deep spirituality in the physical universe and acknowledge the need to engage with faith communities if they are to fully appreciate the remarkable creation in which we live. Key speakers have been drawn from around the world in an outstanding program that will address many of the questions people are asking about the relationship between science and faith in today’s world. Registrations are now open for the inaugural Tabor-Faraday Conference.

This conference is an initiative undertaken by Tabor Adelaide in collaboration with the prestigious Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, based at St Edmunds College, Cambridge University, UK.

Students and friends of Tabor Adelaide are encouraged to attend, what will be a meeting of the minds and generate great debate about this topic.

In some Christian sectors there is considerable unease about the role and purpose of science in society. It is not at all unusual to hear such questions as:

Are science and religion in conflict or do •they compliment each other?

Isn’t the origin of the universe contradicted •by the early chapters of Genesis?

Does the universe need a God to start it at •all?

How do we understand the foundational •Christian doctrines about God and humanity in the light of science?

Is embryonic stem-cell research acceptable? •

More broadly, how are ethical issues raised •by science to be handled?

With regard to the relationship between science and faith, there are many people who imagine that the two are incompatible. There are some who demand that they should be kept as far apart as possible, whilst others argue that to prise science and faith apart is to rob ourselves of the joy of investigating the amazing complexity and ingenuity of a world that is God’s gift to human beings.

This conference aims to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between science and faith in today’s complex and fast-paced world.

A Graduate Conversation with…Rachel KoopmansThis month Liberamente spent five minutes with graduate Rachel Koopmans and this is her story.

Name: Rachel Koopmans

Age: 29...again....

Course: Bachelor of

Theology

Graduated: Class of 2009

Five favourite things about Tabor Adelaide:

Making fantastic, lifelong friends.•

wonderful, Godly, amazingly brilliant lecturers.•

Coffee and theological debates out in the quad.•

The atmosphere of supported learning.•

Starting every history class with a hymn!•

Best Tabor memory:

Too many to count, but Biblical Theology out on the lawn and being gob smacked with revelations whilst reading Torrance in Dave McGregor’s Jesus the Christ class would have to be up there.

Why Tabor?

honestly? God spoke and said, “Get wisdom, knowledge and understanding.” Tabor was a natural choice with such a directive. I never intended on getting a degree however; I blame that on the amazing sense of support and belonging that carried me from one subject to another until before I knew it, a degree was in my hand!

Where are you now?

I took some time off study after the birth of my son in 2010. I’m currently running a small business from home and due to commence my Master’s degree in the new year.

‘Tales from the Upper Room’

‘Tales from the Upper Room’, stories and poetry from the Tabor Adelaide Creative writing Program is on sale now.

The publication is a compilation of student work from the class of 2010.

here is just a taste of what is on offer:

Hospitality – Pamela wilson

I long to ask my friends around

For a cup of tea or two.

To walk them round my garden

And show them what is new.

I’d like to chat awhile with them

To see how they are doing.

Then share with them a tale or two

And tell them how I’m going.

I’d also tell them how my Lord

has helped me through some times,

Of sheer and utter devastation,

And then along those lines

I’d ask if they have had a time

Of Jesus showing up

And telling them just what to do

Or drinking from his ‘cup’.

I’d love for us to share those times

That are so precious to us,

when Jesus and the holy Spirit

work their wonders through us.

Pick up your copy from the Tabor Adelaide front office for just $10. Not only a great read but you will be supporting the talents of your fellow students and the creative writing program.
