Liberty Volleyball By the Numbers1 Liberty currently sits atop the Big South statistical charts in hitting percentage, kills per set, assists per set and aces per set. She is in sixth place in conference history, eight shy of entering the top five.3 Liberty head coach Shane Pinder won his conference-record third Big South Volley-ball Coach of the Year award this season.4 The Lady Flames swept all four Big South major awards this season, the first confer-ence volleyball team to do so in the league’s history. 5 Liberty has faced five Big Ten volleyball teams in its history (Illinois, Michigan, Ne-braska, Ohio State, Penn State).6 For the sixth year in a row, Liberty has won 20 matches, 10+ conference matches, claimed the Big South regular-season title and qualified for the conference final.8 Liberty went on an eight-match winning streak immediately after falling in the 2012 season opener.9 When Jade Craycraft was named 2012 Big South Tournament MVP, it marked the ninth time that a Lady Flame had received conference tournament MVP recognition.10 The Lady Flames are currently on a 10-match winning streak, their longest since a program-record 16-match winning streak in 2007. 21 Senior Loren Thomas, who wears No. 21, needs exactly that many more kills to be-come the 14th Lady Flame in the 1,000-kill club. Among the Liberty players with 1,000 or more kills are current assistant coaches Jennifer (Belk) Vaden and Becky Rudnick.

Who Else Can Say That? Liberty volleyball has posted six straight 20-win seasons, earned six straight confer-ence regular-season titles and made six consecutive appearances in the conference fi-nal (2007-2012). The Lady Flames are the only volleyball team in NCAA Division I about which each of the following three statements is true. Liberty is: - one of four volleyball programs in NCAA Division I to have won or shared their con-ference or division regular-season championship in each of the last six years. - one of six volleyball programs in NCAA Division I to appear in its conference cham-pionship match in each of the last six seasons. - one of 21 volleyball programs in NCAA Division I to win 20 or more matches in each of the last six seasons.

On a Roll The Lady Flames take a 10-match winning streak with them into the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. Liberty’s current winning streak is tied for its second longest since becoming a Division I program in 1988, as the 2003 squad had a 10-match streak as well. The 2007 Lady Flames went on a 16-match winning streak from Oct. 5 through Nov. 17. Liberty is one of 13 teams in the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship field with a current winning streak of 10 or more matches. Western Kentucky has the longest winning streak at present, at 24 matches. Creighton, who will also be playing in Minneapolis this weekend, is sixth with a 16-match winning streak.

2012 Season Highlights Liberty opened the 2012 regular season with an 8-1 record which included an eight-match winning streak and a title at the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic. The Lady Flames posted a 10-5 non-conference record. The Lady Flames went 9-0 at home, extending their home winning streaks to 14 matches overall, 26 home sets and 21 straight conference home matches. Liberty recorded 3-0 victories over High Point on Oct. 6 and Presbyterian College on Oct. 19, as the Lady Flames entered both matches in a first-place tie with their opponent. The team closed the regular season by winning all seven matches during the second half of the conference schedule to gain the Big South regular-season championship.

Block Party The Lady Flames recorded 15 blocks during their Big South final victory over Coastal Carolina, marking the team’s third 15-block match this season. Loren Thomas led all play-ers with seven blocks, followed by Jade Craycraft with five and Melissa Racz with four. Thomas and Kendle Rollins are tied for the team lead with 120 blocks this season. Thomas’ 24 solo blocks are a new program rally-scoring record. Thomas is currently second in program history and sixth in conference history with 472 career blocks. Rollins ranks eighth all-time at Liberty with 307 total blocks.

Double-Doubles Setter Jade Craycraft has shown versatility this season, leading the team with 11 double-doubles. She has been effective on the attack, hitting .345 to pace the Big South, and contributes 2.16 digs and 0.73 blocks per set in addition to 9.65 assists per set. Junior Lillie Happel leads active Lady Flames with 26 career double-doubles, in-cluding seven this season. During Liberty’s current 10-match winning streak, Craycraft has posted five double-doubles and Happel has registered four double-doubles.

Acing the Test Liberty leads the Big South and ranks 20th in the nation with 1.58 aces per set. Ju-nior Becca Haraf paces the Lady Flames with 39 aces on the season, one of four Lady Flames (also Jade Craycraft, Kendle Rollins and Gabrielle Shipe) with 30 or more aces this season. This season marks the first time that Liberty has had four players serve up 30+ aces during the same year under the rally-scoring format.

Looking AheadIf Liberty defeats Minnesota on Friday, the Lady Flames would advance to play the winner of Friday’s Creighton-Marquette matchup on Saturday. Liberty has not faced Marquette, and is 0-1 all-time against Creighton, falling 3-0 to the Bluejays on Sept. 2, 2005 in San Diego. Tournament RewindLiberty has competed in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship on six occasions. In 2007 and 2008, the Lady Flames’ opening round opponent went on to the Final Four, and both years that team lost to Penn State in the national semifinals. 1997 NCAA TournamentThe Lady Flames went 26-9, capturing their first Big South title and making their ini-tial NCAA Tournament appearance, under head coach Chris Phillips. Led by first-team all-conference middle blocker Anthonia Akpama and Big South Tournament MVP Ashley Fletcher, the Lady Flames traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., on Dec. 5. Liberty’s first NCAA foe was Notre Dame, who handed the Lady Flames a 3-0 setback. 1999 NCAA TournamentTwo years later, Liberty went 22-10 and returned to the NCAA Tournament after upsetting Radford in the Big South Championship title contest. Anthonia Akpama was tabbed Big South Player of the Year, but could not keep the Lady Flames from falling at Florida, 3-0, on Dec. 2.

2001 NCAA TournamentLiberty finished the year 21-11, after claiming its third conference crown in five seasons. The Lady Flames were led by Big South Tournament MVP Rachel Harnack and Big South Rookie of the Year (and current assistant coach) Jennifer (Belk) Vaden. Liberty was sent to Durham, N.C., for its first-round match, where the Lady Flames suffered a 3-0 loss to USC on Nov. 30.

2007 NCAA TournamentThe Lady Flames enjoyed a memorable season, snapping Winthrop’s 63-match Big South winning streak and the Eagles’ five-year stranglehold on the Big South title. Big South Tournament MVP Kallie Corbin and Big South Freshman of the Year Nicki Scripko led Big South Coach of the Year Shane Pinder’s Lady Flames back to Durham, N.C., for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. On Nov. 30, Liberty won its first-ever set in the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship, before California wrapped up a 3-1 triumph.

2008 NCAA TournamentLiberty won back-to-back Big South Tournament championships for the first time in pro-gram history. The Lady Flames went 25-9 on the season, thanks in part to the play of Kallie Corbin, who earned Liberty’s first AVCA All-America honor and was joined on the All-Region team by Chelaine McCarty. Liberty won set two at No. 4 Nebraska during the NCAA Tournament opening round on Dec. 5, but the Cornhuskers earned a 3-1 victory.

2011 NCAA TournamentThe Lady Flames secured their fifth straight regular-season championship on the last day of the regular season, 3-2 at UNC Asheville. The team won its conference-record sixth Big South postseason title by sweeping No. 3 seed Radford in the final, with Loren Thomas being named Big South Tournament MVP. The Lady Flames drew No. 8 seed and four-time defending national champion in the NCAA first round, battling the Nittany Lions before falling in three.

What’s in a Date?Liberty will be competing in its seventh NCAA Tournament. In the Lady Flames’ national postseason history, the team has played twice on Nov. 30, two times on Dec. 2 and twice on Dec. 5.

Immediate Impact Redshirt freshman Caroline Douglas contributed right away for the Lady Flames, tallying 19 kills while hitting .548 during Liberty’s season opener against UNCG. For the season, she leads the Big South with 3.68 kills per set. Douglas’ 442 kills this season are eighth on Liberty’s program rally-scoring record list for a single season. Current assistant coach Jennifer Vaden holds the program’s rally-scoring record with 507 kills in 2004.

Top Performer Jade Craycraft was named a national Top Performer by Collegiate Volleyball Update twice this season, on Oct. 23 and Nov. 20. She was most recently by CVU.com after winning Big South Tournament MVP honors in leading the Lady Flames to their seventh conference title.

25+ Junior outside hitter Lillie Happel tallied a career-high 26 kills during a 3-2 victory at Radford, Oct. 26. Caroline Douglas then matched that total, Nov. 2 at High Point. Happel, Douglas and Nicki Scripko (Oct. 14, 2008 vs. High Point) are tied for the most kills by a Lady Flame in the current 25-point scoring format, which began in 2008. Happel and Douglas are the fourth and fifth Liberty players, respectively, with more than 25 kills in a single match in the rally-scoring era. They join Scripko, along with current Liberty assistant coach Jennifer (Belk) Vaden and Rachel Harnack.

.700+ Two active Lady Flames have hit .700 or better in a match during their careers. Most recently, Loren Thoms hit .700 (15-1-20) during a win at Georgetown on Sept. 18, 2012. Kendle Rollins posted a .727 hitting percentage, sending down a career-high 17 kills on Sept. 17, 2011 against The Citadel. Rollins’ top hitting percentage this season was .632, with 14 kills at High Point on Nov. 2.

Dig In Sophomore libero Gabrielle Shipe was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. So far this year, she has collected 499 digs, the seventh-most by a Lady Flame all-time and most since Kelly Haseman’s 653 in 2010. Shipe has registered six 20-digs matches this year, including a career-high 29 at Charleston Southern on Oct. 12.

Fantastic Fridays Liberty volleyball is 14-1 in matches played on Friday this season. The Lady Flames have won 14 straight Friday contests since falling to UNCG, 3-2, in the season opener on Friday, Aug. 24 in Durham, N.C.

Record Pace The Lady Flames are on pace to break their program rally-scoring record for hitting percentage, as Liberty is hitting .251 this season. The current program record of .232 was set during the 2007 campaign. Liberty has hit .300 or better eight times this season, including one .400 match.

175/700 Shane Pinder, in his ninth season as Liberty’s head coach, has compiled a 174-120 career record and ranks fourth in the Big South in career coaching victories. Liberty’s next victory will be Pinder’s 175th career win and will also be the 700th vic-tory in program history. The Lady Flames have averaged nearly 19 wins per season since the founding of the program in 1976.

Moving on Up Jade Craycraft moved into sixth place in program history in career assists, passing Michelle Marsh (1986-87) on the all-time list during the 2012 Big South Volleyball Cham-pionship. Craycraft has dished out 3,282 career assists.
