FAITH IMMANUEL’S NIGHT AT THE SENATOR’S GAME

Friday, July 12 was Faith Immanuel Night at the Harrisburg Senators Baseball

Game on City Island. Some 60 members and friends of the church gathered in a

special section of the FNB Field ballpark to munch on a buffet of goodies before

settling into fabulous seats to watch the Senators beat the Richmond Squirrels.

Highlights of the perfect summer evening included watching Pastor Allison

Spooner throw out one of many first balls of the game, and listening to our own

Bob Dash sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame in a fine tenor voice during the 7th

inning stretch. Finally the evening was capped by a breathtaking fireworks display

right over the ballpark. Everyone who attended said they looked forward to

coming back next year and bringing even more friends.

MISSION COMMITTEE NEWS

Back to School Bash: As you know, we have been collecting pencil sharpen-

ers, erasers and hand sanitizer in July for the Susquehanna Back 2 School Bash.

These items will become part of free backpacks that will be available for the

students at the Bash to help them be ready for the first day of school. The Back

to School Bash will be held on Saturday, August 24 from 11:00 AM – 2 PM at

the Susquehanna Township High School, 3500 Elmerton Avenue. The Back 2

School Bash is a great opportunity to people in the community to meet faculty

and staff members and also key community partners to learn about the exciting

resources and services available.

Faith Immanuel will have a table located outside in the front lawn area of the

school where there is some shade available. We will display information about

our church and run a game for the kids. Members of the Mission Committee,

Outreach Committee, Food Pantry Steering Committee and members at large

will be on hand to help with the games and talk to folks about our church.

Pill Bottle Donations: The project to donate empty pill bottles to a local

missionary doctor who is helping to bring medical supplies to Papua New

Guinea has been a huge success! As of now, they have all they need. The

Mission Committee is currently looking for another organization who would be

interested in receiving donations of empty pill bottles and will let you know

when we are able to begin collecting again. Stay tuned!

Community Aid Donations: Don’t forget to donate your gently used cloth-

ing to the CommunityAid Donation Box located in the back parking lot. In 2019

we have received a total of $55.40 for the clothing you donated. It’s a great

way to help those in need in our community and to help our church.

Downtown Daily Bread: We still need volunteers for Downtown Daily

Bread on Tuesday, December 24, 2019 and Tuesday, December 31, 2019. If

interested, please sign up on the sheet in the Welcome Center.

Food Pantry Update: The transition of the Rockville Methodist Church

Food Pantry, (aka, Adopt-A-Family Food Pantry) to a new entity supported by

the HANNA Foundation, Tree of Life Church and Faith Immanuel Presbyterian

is well underway. The pantry has been available once a month in June and July

and the last pantry of the summer will be Saturday, August 24 at the Holtzman

Elementary School. After that, the pantry will move to the Susquehanna Town-

ship High School.

The steering committee, made up of members from the 3 organizations listed

are busy creating a mission statement, determining a new name for the pantry,

developing a Coordinating Committee to broaden involvement to more com-

munity organizations, determining days/hours of operation, identifying food pan-

try operational jobs and creating a list of job responsibilities, discussing possible

additions to the pantry such as elder-share boxes and weekend backpacks for

needy students, creating a procedural manual, finishing the necessary buildouts

for the new pantry located at the high school, and designing a plan to move the

know about you but that seems like a daunting list to me. I am so proud that Faith

Immanuel is involved in this wonderful community effort. Special thanks to mem-

bers of Faith Immanuel that are serving on the Pantry Steering Committee: Susan

Anthony, Lori Beamer, and Bonnie Hack.

There will be much more information to come in September, so please

stay tuned!

Please don’t forget about Faith Immanuel’s Ongoing Mission Projects!

See Anita Klaboe or Sue Dinges to buy Giant Gift Cards to support the

church. Bring in canned goods or packaged products to church and drop them in the bin

labeled for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

Donate personal care items for Downtown Daily Bread. To volunteer to

serve at DDB contact Barb Dugan at [email protected] or use the

sign-up sheet in the Welcome Center.

The Mission Committee Welcomes Your Input! See any of the mission

members with your comments/questions. Mission Committee members include

Lori Beamer, Barb Dugan, Billie Hawk, Linda and Keith Graham, Bob MacIntyre,

and Ken Zimmerman.

As the summer winds down and we all begin planning for the year ahead, I en-

courage you to mark your calendars and begin speaking with interested family and

friends about the following slate of events which has been generously underwrit-

ten by the Stabler Foundation.

The Mendelssohn Piano Trio, which opens the series, hardly require an introduc-

tion. Violinist Peter Sirotin, the concertmaster of the Harrisburg Symphony, and

his wife, pianist Ya-Ting Chang, serve as co-directors of Market Square Concerts,

while Fiona Thompson is the Principal Cellist of the HSO.

Each subsequent concert will feature at least one musician known to us here at

Faith Immanuel. The Vintage Brass Consecration Day Celebration is now in its

sixth year. Pianist Maria Thompson Corley, of Duo Chiaroscuro, shared a moving

testimony and pieces by composers of African descent last February, and The

Hershey Handbell Ensemble performed at Hope in April. Pianist and Steinway

Representative Matthew Bachman shared his reflections and skills with us in May,

and I am extremely excited for all of you to experience his artistry again, this time

alongside a great tenor in concert this coming February. Our performer for April,

Lithuanian pianist Gintaras Januševičius, thanked us for our missions project to

benefit Eastern European music students and performed for us by video. Our sea-

Page 4: Life in Faith · Debbie Kissinger Office Administrator Carolyn Frischkorn Financial Secretary George Hope Treasurer Joe Sponaugle ... Lori Beamer, and Bonnie Hack. There will be much

of our friends from the State Street Academy of Music performing in a benefit

recital in May. So when considering which concerts to attend and in speaking to others, you

are truly in a wonderful position to speak from first hand knowledge about each

of these wonderful musicians, most of whom you have heard in our sanctuary.

Each month you can also expect me to provide some more detailed information

about the upcoming concerts, but for now, mark your calendars please!

First Responders Worship Service

and Church Picnic and Concert

Sunday, September 8, 2019

Faith Immanuel Presbyterian Church will recognize community first responders at

our annual outdoor worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 8. The picnic and con-

cert will follow.

On duty and off duty police officers, firefighters, emergency responders and emer-

gency room personnel from Lower Paxton and Susquehanna townships are invited

along with their families. Members of the congregation as well as family members,

friends and neighbors who serve or who have served as first responders are also

encouraged to attend.

Many faith institutions honor first responders as hometown heroes near the anni-

versary of Sept. 11. Faith’s service will offer gratitude to those who serve with

courage, integrity and caring to keep the community safe.

Letters of invitations from Rev. Allison Spooner on behalf of the congregation to

the two public safety directors and emergency medical service providers in Lower

Paxton and Susquehanna townships and the director of the Community Osteo-

pathic Emergency Room are being mailed in early August. The Lower Paxton Twp.

Board of Supervisors and Susquehanna Twp. Board of Commissioners are also

being contacted. Terry Hack and Joe Stimmel are visiting a total of seven fire

stations to personally provide informational fliers in August.

THE PICNIC AND CONCERT will immediately follow the outdoor worship

service. Jim Milbrand and the Lower Paxton Township Variety Band will be

playing. Look for the (potluck) sign-up sheet in the Welcome Center. Walk-ins are wel-

come. Note: Drinks and a main meat will be provided. We look forward to our friends from Hope joining us as well! Everyone

is welcome! Bring your family, friends, and neighbors. See you on the 8th!

ANIMAL BLESSINGS SERVICE TO BE HELD IN OCTOBER

A Blessings of the Animals service will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 12, at Faith Im-

manuel Presbyterian Church.

Individuals and families with companion, agricultural and service animals - bird,

mammal and amphibian - will be invited to gather on church grounds to cele-

brate kinship with creation. A worship service will include music, scripture, mes-

sage and individual blessings. The word “blessings” means imparting the power of

life.

In addition to living creatures - cats, dogs, hamsters, chickens, rabbits, canaries,

turtles and so on - children with allergies will be encouraged to bring favorite

stuffed animal toys. Individuals can bring photographs of endangered species. A

remembrance display area will be available for those who wish to bring photo-

graphs or tokens of departed pets.

Photographs with certificates of participation will be presented along with animal

bandanas and home-made treats. Working animals, rescue organizations, service

animals, maybe a zoo animal or two are being invited to attend. Dauphin County

Library System’s outreach van MARCO will be on site with fun reading activities

involving animals.

Participants will be asked to bring non-perishable pet food and cleaning supplies

to be donated to a local rescue organization.

Those attending are requested to use humane restraints or appropriate contain-

ers for animals. Everyone is encouraged to bring picnic blankets or lawn chairs.

Water and a relief area for dogs will be available.

Anyone interested in serving on a Blessings of the Animals organizing committee

is asked to email [email protected].
