Light at the Heart of Winter

As we approach the Winter Solstice, the children begin

to anticipate with excitement, Tarremah’s annual

Winter Spiral which will be held this Friday evening, 22

June at 5:20pm – the school’s thirtieth Winter.

The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day of the year

and the longest night. It is also the furthest north that

the sun rises and sets in the course of the year and the

lowest arc of the sun’s course across the northern sky.

It marks nature’s ‘darkest’ point of the year in the

southern hemisphere, when the life-giving solar forces

that sustain it are at their lowest ebb. The human being

possesses both an earthly and a divine nature,

inter-penetrated by both and participating in both. That

which is of the earth in us is inseparable from what is

occurring in nature. When we are conscious of this

‘descent’ of the life of nature into its restorative winter

sleep, when we feel the absence of the solar forces of

life, light and love in the world of nature around us, the

opportunity becomes available to us to rouse our soul

forces and our human spirit to find the seeds of these

which remain in the soil of our own nature.

Our Winter Spiral enacts the discovery in our darkest

hours, of our light within. A large candle at the heart of

the spiral continues to burn despite the darkness all

around. Each child enters the spiral together with a

‘buddy’ from one of the older or younger classes –

reminding us that we cannot reascend to the light

without taking our ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ with us. Each

carries their unlit candle slowly to the flame at the

heart of the spiral and lights their candle. Then they

turn and offer it on the next unlit step of the spiral path,

gradually adding to the illumination of the world for all.

As much as possible, we undertake this whole event in

silence, allowing the experience to speak directly to the

children – now or in the future when they may need it.

As an Indian sage once expressed it; “Things that are

real, are given and received in silence.”

We apologise that we can only provide this experience

to your children but glad that you can participate in

some way through them. At the conclusion of the

illumination of the spiral we ask that everyone – as best

they can – strives to depart in hushed tones so that

some of the quiet and veneration engendered through

the course of the evening can depart with you. Our

hope is that together we can all find in these festivals

some of the wisdom of the cosmos and its mysterious

reflection in the human being. We look forward to

seeing you there.

Class 8 Craft Revolution

During the first few weeks of their Craft Intensive, Class

8 learned traditional basket weaving, using poa and flax

(picked from the side of the road) to create beautiful

free-form baskets.

The Industrial Revolution is one the of the main themes

of Class 8, and to allow a deeper understanding of this,

the students were then introduced to sewing

machines. Firstly they created their own machine

embroidered bookmarks. They have just now

completed making their own carry bags using calico and

decorative material.

Class 10 presents ‘Electra’ and Class 9

presents ‘Frogs”

Greek Tragedy and Comedy???

Electra by Euripides and Frogs by Aristophanes???

Yes.

Serendipity strikes!

Class 10 and Class 9.

Both classes have been independently working on their respective plays Electra and Frogs.

Watch this space....or posters around the school to unravel the mystery.

Both will be performed in the last week of term on Wednesday and Thursday.

Any urgent need for mystery unravelling, please email Lindsey or Brett.

Thank you.

Craft Update

What’s been going on in handcraft? I thought it might

be good to update everyone on what we have been up

to in craft so far this year. With our office out of action

there has been little chance to display our work so I am

hoping the photos can do the work justice.

Class 1 have made their craft bags and knitting needles

and learnt to knit. They have begun by making the head

for their doll and have moved on to the body. All are

knitting confidently now assisted also by their buddies

in Class 5 who visit and help on Wednesday’s.

Class 2 have designed and began stitching their

needle cases while also knitting and finishing their dolls.

Class 3 have learnt how to weave and made a simple

woven purse before moving onto learning to crotchet.

With crotchet they made simple necklaces, flowers,

coasters and belts.

Class 4 have been busy learning cross stitch and have

completed a lovely cross stitch pin cushion before

moving on to a free design of cross stitch for a book

mark.

Coinciding with their Ancient India main lesson Class 5

have cut, stitched and embroidered felt elephants in

three dimensional form, bringing them to life with

colour and beauty.

Class 6 have created some beautiful needle felted na-

ture scenes and three dimensional animals before mov-

ing on to make a standing doll.

Class 7 are well on the way to making their fully formed

life like human doll, all hand stitched. They are looking

wonderful!

It’s been a big half year in handcraft with some amazing

efforts and items made by all children across the

school. Great crafting everyone!!

News and Events

Farewell Message from Gina Poulton It is with profound regret that I

depart this incredible school and

leave behind an amazing,

dedicated and talented group of

work colleagues, and such a beautiful community of

parents.

I struggle to express how much I will miss my students.

They have been the warmest and most embracing

cohort of students I have encountered in my teaching

career. Not only are they blessed with so much

potential, but humility abounds.

Both parents and students should be so very proud of

these admirable qualities. It has been my privilege and

pleasure to teach each and every student.

I hope that I have been able to impart some of my

knowledge, life experience and skills to assist each

student on their journey. I cannot fully convey my

affection, respect and admiration for this wonderful

School.

I am so grateful that John, Rod and the Executive

provided me with the opportunity to be a part of it.

My time at Tarremah has been cut short for compelling

personal reasons. It does not mean that I intend to lose

contact with the school, and I would dearly love to keep

in contact with you all to see how you are travelling in

your journey. I am confident that our paths will cross

again!

Until then, adieu!

Spring Fair

We’re ecstatic to announce that there will be a Spring Fair this year! It will be held on Sunday 11 November (Remembrance Day), with a slightly longer time slot of 10:00am to 3:00pm.

To deliver the Fair in the best way possible, a

committee has formed and members will be contacting

class parents in the coming weeks, to discuss class

activities. Our focus is on supporting our own school

community, with fundraising as a secondary

outcome. It’s our intention that our children and

community will benefit from every bit of the effort we

all put in, and then some.

Stay tuned for more information, via your class

parents. We look forward to sharing in a great fair with

you.

Sincerely,

The Spring Fair Committee
