LIGHTER-THAN-AIR SYSTEMSEnduring Performance. Enduring Legacy. The Future of LTA Systems High Altitude Airship (HAATM)The High Altitude Airship is an unmanned, untethered, lighter-than-air vehicle operating autonomously in the stratosphere for sustained, ultra long endurance missions as a stable, geostationary platform suitable for intelligence, surveillance, and connaissance (ISR) and communications. Its key attributes are: Persistent Global Operations (Months)Large Coverage Area (>300,000 mi2) Much Lower Cost Than Other AircraftExtremely Durable / SurvivableRecoverable / Repairable / Re-TaskableNo In-theater LogisticsAffordable Persistence The High Altitude Long Endurance Demonstrator (HALE-D) currently under development is a proof-of-concept airship system to demonstrate the feasibility of HAA technologies. The performance goals for this prototype include sustained operations for an extended period at an altitude of 60,000 feet. Driven by two electric propulsion motors, the HALE-D is powered by thin-lm solar cells and rechargeable lithium ion polymer batteries. The HALE-D will demonstrate long-endurance station keeping and ight control capabilities.HAA. ALWAYS THERE. ALWAYS ON.Lockheed Martins Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) Systems A Legacy of Mission PerformancePTDS LEVERAGES A WIDE-AREA, SECURE COMMUNICATIONS BACKBONE FOR THE INTEGRATION OF THREAT REPORTING.Unsurpassed Resources:With products like the U.S. Armys Persistent Threat Detection System (PTDS), the U.S. Air Forces Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS), and the U.S. Armys unmanned High Altitude Airship (HAA) currently in development, the world-class team of technologists and engineers at Lockheed Martins LTA Persistent Surveillance Systems in Akron, Ohio has consistently met and surpassed stringent client requirements. With dedicated design and calibrated analytic tools, a comprehensive system and sub-system testing facility including a dedicated LTA System Integration Lab, and expansive facilities for production, system assembly, integration, and nal ight certication at the Akron Airdock, they can meet and surpass your requirements, too.Lockheed Martin delivered its rst LTA-based persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems to the U.S. Navy more than 75 years ago, and so launched an enduring legacy of LTA innovation, engineering, and production resulting in more than 300 airships and thousands of aerostats in support of military operations world-wide.Persistent Combat Support74K Aerostat SystemThe 74K Aerostat System was selected by the U.S. Army for its Persistent Threat Detection System (PTDS) currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. As the heart of this system, the 74K hosts multi-mission payloads and is functionally integrated with the overall command information architecture.Supporting the WarghterThe PTDS is an aerostat-based sensor integration architecture designed to support the automated interoperability between tactical/theater surveillance assets and the dissemination of threat data to operational forces to aid interdiction of hostile res and unconventional threats. PTDS leverages a wide-area, secure communications backbone for the integration of threat reporting from multiple available sensor assets.Baseline Components1. Aerostat2. Tether3. All TARS systems are equipped and integrated with Lockheed Martins L88 wide area surveillance radar. The 420K is the only large aerostat system in daily use in the U.S. The TARS provides low-level radar surveillance for the United States-Mexico border, the Florida Straights, and part of the Caribbean in support of U.S. Counter-Drug and Counter-Narco Terrorism missions and other continental United States air sovereignty missions. The TARS is optimized for detecting low, slow ying aircraft as well as maritime and surface targets.Enduring Legacy. Enduring Performance. The PTDS is extremely effective. . . When it is used in conjunction with our other assets, it makes it nearly impossible for the insurgents to hide from us.
