About 400 Sailors, veterans and spous-es looking for employment attended a July10 job fair at Naval Base Ventura County(NBVC), Port Hueneme—and only com-panies that had positions immediatelyavailable were invited.“Hiring Our Heroes,” held at Duke’s

Place, was a joint venture of the U.S.Navy’s Shipmates toWorkmates program— which helps Sailors caught in the cur-rent military drawdown find jobs — theU.S. Chamber of Commerce and otherfederal, state and local agencies.More than 50 companies needing work-

ers sent representatives to the fair to col-lect resumes and conduct preliminaryinterviews. Among them were Quest Di-agnostics, Haas Automation, the VenturaCounty Sheriff ’s Department and SanMiguel Produce in Oxnard.Marisa Stubbs, a senior staffing special-

ist for Quest Diagnostics, said her com-pany hasmore than 150 openings. Drivers, lab assistants and phlebotomists areneeded, and there are jobs available incustomer service and billing, some of themat managerial levels. Most of the jobs arein West Hills, Valencia, Cypress and SanJuan Capistrano. She was enthusiastic about the prospect

of hiring people with a military back-ground.“We have a lot of veterans already,” she

said. “Some have moved high up afterstarting in minimum-wage positions.”She said the military helps create an

employee who shows up on time, is pre-sentable and respectable and who followsdirections but still asks questions whennecessary.JoAnnOlivares, human resources direc-

tor for San Miguel Produce, was lookingfor all that plus some specific skill sets.“We need people who have experience

driving heavy equipment,” she said. “Weneed forklift drivers, and we have a bigshipping department, so we need truckdrivers who can go from our fields to themarkets in Los Angeles.”Equipment Operator 2nd Class Padraig

Martin, with the Naval Facilities Expedi-tionary Logistics Center, talked at lengthwith Olivares. The father of a 6-monthold, he leaves the Navy Oct. 1 and wants

It is almost time to return to school.Students are collecting their school sup-plies in their backpacks and are eager tofind out if their best friends will be in theirclass next year. This is also a time for parents to be plan-

ning their child’s return to school. Playingan active role in their child’s school expe-rience is the best way for parents to ensuretheir child’s educational success.Studies on parent involvement indicate

that the most accurate predictor of achild’s achievement in school is the extentto which the child’s family is able to:• Create an environment that encour-

ages learning.• Communicate high yet reasonable ex-

pectations for their child’s achievementand future career.• Become involved in the child’s educa-

tion at school and in the community. Here are some ideas that can help par-

ents provide a family environment that willsupport success.

Encouraging learningRegardless of the student’s grade level,

homework can be an everyday expectation.

If the teacher did not assign homework,or if the student finishes the homeworkquickly, parents should expect the studentto have plenty of books on hand to prac-tice reading.Parents should set aside a time and place

to ensure that homework is completedwithout distractions. The best way to de-termine an appropriate amount of time isto multiply the grade level by 10 minutes.A first grader should have 10 minutes ofhomework; a 12th grader, two hours.How-ever, depending on the student and theteacher, that can vary.

There is no doubt that students will be-gin using the Internet for schoolwork, evenat very young ages. It is important for par-ents to understand how they and theirstudent can use it best.A good online resource is “Parents’

Guide to the Internet,”www.ed.gov/pubs/parents/internet. It is intended to helpparents — regardless of their technologi-cal know-how—effectively employ onlineresources in their child’s education. Theguide provides parents with an introduc-tion to the Internet, instructions on howto navigate it, a glossary of common In-ternet terminology and suggestions onhow parents can allow their children totap into the wonders of the Internet whilesafeguarding them from its potential haz-ards.

Expectations for achievementChildrenwill often fulfill the expectation

set for them. If a parent expects their stu-dent to get all B’s on a report card, whatis the student’s motivation to get all A’s?The goal was met at B’s. Until studentsreach about 11th grade, the long-termreasons for doing well in school have not

sunk in. Therefore, their only motivationto achieve is the parental expectation. However, it is important to know yourchildren and be fully aware of their skillsand abilities. Parents’ expectations shouldbe reasonable.

Become involvedBecoming involved means establishing

two-way communication between the par-ent and teacher, school administration orother parents. When students know theireducation is important enough for momor dad to take the time to visit the schoolto volunteer, spend evenings attendingschool meetings, or make a phone call orsend an email to check on a student’s prog-ress, education becomes a priority for thestudent as well.Ask your child’s teacher how to get in-

volved, and keep asking throughout theschool year as needs change.

— For information on how to get involvedwith local schools or for any K-12 education-related question, please call the NBVC schoolliaison officer at 805-989-5211 or [email protected].

In this article, I’d like to talk abouttime. We cannot smell or see time. Even our

most powerful scanning electron micro-scope cannot see it. Our incredible olfac-tory system cannot detect the scent of time.Wedon’t really have any empirical evidenceof its existence. Nonetheless, daily we seeits effects.Albert Einstein once quipped, “The only

reason for time is so that everything doesn’thappen at once.”Theoretically speaking, there are two

points on Earth that are zero time — twopoints of timelessness: theNorth Pole andthe South Pole. Time lines are vertical, orlongitudinal, and all the lines converge atthe poles. However, even if you were tostand in the middle of the pole, sadly, youwould still age.We cannot fully grasp the mystery of

time; however, we can measure it. And ifwe canmeasure it, we canuse it to prioritizewhat’s really important. Hence, we canmeasure time — and time can measureus.MissionaryAdoniram Judson once said,

“A life spent is irrevocable. It will remain

to be contemplated through eternity….Thesame may be said of each day. When it isonce past, it is gone forever.”This is a salient observation: “Once past,

it is gone forever.” Do we spend our timeon things that matter? What is importantto you — I mean really important toyou?Time is a mystery. Time talks. One of the most common issues in rela-

tionships is the misuse of time. Often, Ihear things like, “He’s always playing vid-eo games,” or “She’s always on Face-book.”Dr. James F. White, former professor at

DrewUniversity, said this about time: “Theway we use our time is a good indicationof what we consider to be of prime impor-tance in life. We can always be counted onto find time for those things we considermost important, thoughwemaynot alwaysbe willing to admit to others, or even toourselves, what our real priorities are….Whether it is making money, political ac-tion or family activities, we find the timefor putting first those things that mattermost to us…. Time talks.”Perhaps we need to re-evaluate how we

are spending our time.Remember the words of Judson: “Once

past, it is gone forever.” How you spendyour time reveals your value system.Whatdo you value? How do you use time? This week, I urge you to ruminate on

how you spend your time.GaryChapman, author of the book, The Five Love Lan-guages, wrote, “A central aspect of qualitytime is togetherness. I do notmean proxim-ity…. Togetherness has to dowith focusedattention.” Let’s focus our attention onwhat really matters.Time. We cannot see it. We cannot hear

it. We cannot smell it. But it talks.

stakes, so that when thethrower flings his upperbody around and releasesthe discus or shotput, thechair won’t tilt.It has enabled Navy ath-

letes like Linda Simpsonand Selemani Johnson tomedal in these events dur-

ing the Warrior Games, aparalympic-style contestamong wounded warriorsfrom all the armed forces. The chair’s use is gov-

erned by a complicated setof rules that takes the de-gree of disability into ac-count.To throw the shot, the

athlete pulls what looks andfeels like a cannonball backto his ear, his forearm par-allel to the ground, his wriststeady. Then he swings hisupper body around, shootsout his arm and releases theball. With the discus, the ath-

lete holds the disc andswings him arm severaltimes like a pendulum, thensend the disc flying. His coach for this event,

four-time Olympian Ra-mona Pagel of the Bee-FitHealth and Wellness Cen-ter, prefers the shotput.“It’s brute strength,” she

said. “The discus takes a lotof finesse.”After just a few throws,

Hancock could feel themuscles in his shouldersand upper back at work. But he stuck with it for thenext half-hour, outlastinghis service dog, Buddy. The Beagle-Lab mix,

used to chasing things, found the shot and discustoo heavy to retrieve. Sowhile Hancock got a work-out, Buddy curled up in thegrass and went to sleep.

can stay in this area, fine, but I’m alwaysopen to going somewhere else.”He’s doing all the right things, according

to Cmdr. Pat Sanders, who runs the Ship-mates toWorkmates programout of NavalSea Systems Command in Washington,D.C.Sanders said planning and flexibility are

critical in this economic environment.Of the Navy’s 108 rates, 31 are targeted

for downsizing, Sanders said. Many are inaviation and construction.ThatmeansNaval BaseVenturaCounty,

which united a naval air station and a con-structionbattalion center, is gettinghit hard,

losing up to 70 Sailors, Sanders said. In all,the Navy is paring nearly 3,000 from themilitary rolls.“Navy leadership is trying its best to help

them have a soft landing,” Sanders said.In the meantime, spouses and veterans

are also trying to get jobs, leading to thepartnership with Shipmates toWorkmatesand the creationof the“HiringOurHeroes”job fairs, said Kathryn Poynton, deputydirector of events and strategic outreachfor the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.More than 100 of the job fairs have been

held so far, she said. Some companies hire on the spot. Poyn-

ton said that in Rogers, Ark., Wal-Marthired a Purple Heart recipient, and a com-mercial truck driving school hired 40work-ers at another job fair. That didn’t happen at NBVC. Many of

the employers said job-seekers need to ap-ply online; others reported a longer, moredrawn-out process for an actual hiring totake place. At the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office

booth, background investigator Scott VanTassell chatted with Utilitiesman 1st ClassJosephRubinoof the 31st SeabeeReadinessGroup about his qualifications.Rubino wasn’t ready, though — he has

background is especially helpful in law en-forcement.“They can help recruits who don’t have

anymilitary experience,”he said. “You can’tput a price on that.”DidVanTassell see anyonehewouldhave

hired that day?“Sure did,”he said, watchingRubino get

information at another booth. “He justwalked away.”

Lt. j.g. Troy Avery, the chaplain for Na-val Mobile Construction Battalion(NMCB) 40, hadn’t shaved since he’d beenon Guam about 24 hours earlier. After a big hug, his 5-year-old daughter

noticed.“Dad,” she said, “your face is pokey.”It didn’t stop her from giving him an-

other hug, and it didn’t slow down her3-year-old sister, Anna. They hadn’t seentheir dad for eight months, and they hada lot of hugs to catch up on.“It’s wonderful to be home,” he told

them and his wife, Hajnal. “It’s absolute-ly fantastic. I have a bunch of beautifulladies to come home to.”Avery was one of about 150 Seabees

fromNMCB 40 who came home with themain party onMonday, July 16. Another200 arrived with the advance party on theFourth of July, and another wave wouldarrive later in the month. The July 16 homecoming took place at

“I can’t even describe it,” he said, tears running downhis cheeks as he held Ayla and hugged his wife, Morgan.“It’s been a long deployment, and it’s great to be home, here with my family to support me.”Latrece Goodwin was also ecstatic.“This is the best moment ever!” she shouted as she

searched the faces of the disembarking Seabees for herbrother, Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Michkael Russell. She and 14 otherswere waiting forhim, including hisgrandmother, moth-er, wife and kids. They didn’t havelong to wait.“This feels unreal,” Russell said after hugging every-

one.Reunited families piled into cars, looking to go home

or have lunch. Single Sailors stepped into waiting bus-es.But Equipment Operator 1st Class Matthew Krea-

malmyer wasn’t going anywhere. His wife, Jessica, hadcome to pick him up with their three children, ages 5, 2and 5 months, but the van she’d driven there wouldn’tstart.“The whole time he was gone it was working just fine,”

she said, her voice far too calm given the situation. “Nowit won’t even turn over.”Kreamalmyer was just as composed.“It’s just another day,” he said. “Stuff happens.”But a rescue team wasn’t far behind. Builder 1st Class

Johan Sanchez and Construction Mechanic 1st ClassJames Eaton quickly figured out a way to get Mom andthe kids home in one car and tools and a new batteryover to the van. After eight months together, they weren’tabout to leave their fellow Seabee stranded.“He’s our Sea Daddy,” Sanchez said.

Blue Angels. Cheng is Blue Angel No. 8,the events coordinator. He’ll set up all theair shows in 2013, including the one atNaval Base Ventura County Sept. 28 and29. During travel, he’ll fly in the cockpitbehind No. 7, the narrator, and he’ll flyonce or twice a week during practice, buthe won’t fly in any of the air shows. Hisjob is on the ground, backing up the nar-rator and giving him cues as to what’shappening in the air as the narrator fo-cuses on the crowd.Being in the Blue Angels has earned

Cheng celebrity status, but he doesn’t seeit that way.“I’m honored and humbled that I get

to do this,” he said. Then he grins.“I’m also really excited. Every day I get

up and I can’t believe this is happening.”The news hasn’t sunk in yet for Cheng’s

parents, immigrants fromHongKongwhohave never attended an air show.“My mom is like, ‘So you’re not going

on deployment, so that’s good, right?’Slowly, they’re beginning to understandthe concept.”

The biggest challenge now is the moveto Pensacola. His wife, Jen, is expectingtheir second child in December; daughterAlyssa is almost 2.“Jen is really excited and knows this is

great for our family,” Cheng said. “It’staken on a life of its own. We’re gettingmore congratulations on this than we didon the pregnancies.”AlthoughCheng hadwanted to fly since

that day on the San Francisco elementaryschool rooftop, it took awhile for that

dream to come true. He graduated froma San Francisco prep school, got his bach-elor’s degree in economics from the Uni-versity of California, Irvine, in 1996, thenwent to work in Long Beach as the as-sistant manager of a rental car compa-ny.By 2000, he was back in San Francisco,

working at his parents’ jewelry businessand looking for a new future. He stillwanted to fly, so he met with a Navy re-cruiter but didn’t hear back. He thoughtabout enrolling in graduate school at theUniversity of San Francisco and becom-ing a teacher. He applied to the FBI.And then the Navy called back. His decision to join themilitary was not

a popular one with his parents or his twosisters.“My father had come over from Hong

Kong and became a doctor,” he said.“Doctor, lawyer — that’s what was ex-pected. I broke the mold.”He hesitates.“I broke it really bad.”The Wednesday before Thanksgiving

2000, he signed the papers and gave hisoath. Then he reported to Officer Candi-date School (OCS) in Pensacola.

“That taught me a lot about the mili-tary,” he said. “I learned about mentaldiscipline, teamwork, attention to de-tail.”His biggest eye-opener came when the

drill sergeant ordered each candidate torip up his bed andmake it—military style— in 5 minutes. No one came close thefirst time, or the second or the third.“He told us we’d never do it unless we

worked together,” he recalled. “So fourpeople each held one corner of a sheetandwe tied it down andwe got all of themdone in time.“I found that out aboutOCS:What they

did to you— themental games they played— there was a method to the madness.”After OCS, Cheng stayed in Pensacola

for flight school, learning about weather, aerodynamics and navigation before start-ing to fly a propeller plane, then a jet.In a touch of irony, the FBI called

shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, to accept hisapplication.Cheng was assigned to strike aircraft,

flying S-3s. He was stationed in Naval AirFacility Atsugi, Japan, and flew off the

USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). He saw relatives inHong Kong and visited Iwo Jima, an experiencehe called “awesome.”In March of 2005, Cheng went to Whidbey Is-

land, Wash., to transition from the S-3 to theProwler. He deployed the next year in support ofOperation Iraqi Freedom, followed by anotherdeployment in 2009 in support of Operation En-during Freedom. He has been at NBVC since March of 2010.It’s been awhile since he’s flown a jet, but Cheng

isn’t concerned.“It’s like riding a bike,” he said. “It all comes

back to you.”As part of his job as deputy operations officer,

Cheng worked on the 2010 air show, which fea-tured the Thunderbirds, theAir Force FlightDem-onstration Squadron. Now, he’ll be on the otherside. As Blue Angel No. 8, he’ll visit every air show

site in advance of the 2013 performances, whichbegin inMarch in El Centro. There’s roughly onea week after that, with a break around Easter anda break in August. The last show of the seasonwill be in November in Pensacola, then it’s backto El Centro the following January.“The time away from home will be significant,”

he said, adding that he and his wife, married since2006, are used to the long absences.“The first year we weremarried I was gone eight

months,” he said. “In the Navy, there’s no suchthing as perfect timing.”The Blue Angels get 40 to 50 applications each

year. Thedeadline to applywasApril 30, afterwhichCheng began the “rush process,” when applicantsattend different air shows to meet the team— andto be assessed. Cheng traveled to El Centro; Tus-caloosa, Ala.; Kingsville, Texas; and Jones Beach,N.Y. He found out June 4 that he was one of 16finalists.In themeantime, he finisheduphis graduate stud-

ies with Norwich University, earning an MBA infinance. Then came July 13.“I know that I’m representing 500,000 Sailors

and Marines,” he said. “There’s pressure behindthis. I have to do a great job because I owe it tothem.”Everymember of the Blue Angels team, he says,

is a role model.“I want to show kids and their families what the

military does. I want to show the precision, theprofessionalism.”So is he a celebrity?“The closest I’ll ever get,” he says with a laugh.

by Gina Blaxton, an employeenew to Camarillo Bridal but veryfamiliar with the military. Herspouse is Cmdr. Allen Blaxton, officer in charge at the FleetReadiness Center (FRC) South-west Detachment Point Mugu atNaval Base Ventura County,“This has been amazing,”Gina

Blaxton said. “Many of the bridessaid they would never be able toafford a dress, that finances aretight. This ismaking dreams cometrue.”One of Blaxton’s customers

that day was a man whose bridewas in London.

“He knew her size, the color shewanted, the style she preferred,”Blaxton said. “He picked one outfor her.”For Chavez andDinse, much of

the fun was in trying on the dress-es. The one Dinse chose had aprice tag of $2,472.65. She’s plan-ning a January wedding. Her fi-ancé is a police officer in Texas.Chavezwould like to bemarried
