Lighting Application and Design

The LIA courses in Lighting Application and Design provide an understanding of how lighting forms an

integral part of any architectural design and teaches how to apply the knowledge of light sources.

Consisting of the Certificate and Advanced Certificate suite of courses, they have proven to be the catalyst for many long

and very successful careers in the lighting industry.

The suite of courses start with the solid foundation of the LIA Certificate and then build knowledge with two completely

new and very well received Advanced Certificate courses in interior and exterior lighting design. They provide the skills

and knowledge to ensure lighting successfully performs its vital functions in our modern world.

The LIA Certificate Course Modules

The LIA Certificate suite comprises cleverly packaged modules that build an understanding of the fundamentals of light, light sources and lighting design as the solid foundations of knowledge for a career in the lighting profession, or for those in the wider lighting community, the basis for an understanding of lighting in the roles they perform.

The LIA Certificate

To be awarded the LIA Certificate delegates will take all 3 modules:Lighting FundamentalsLight Sources and LuminairesLighting DesignDelegates will need to take the modules sequentially and then complete a lighting project.

Lighting ProjectThe final part of the course is a half-day briefing session scheduled on the morning after the Lighting Design module. The project will be introduced along with the requirements for completion and how it will need to be presented. Delegates will have 3 months to complete the project.

Lighting Fundamentals

Taught over two days, this module provides a basic understanding of light and lighting.

The course covers:• How light is produced• How light is used by

lighting engineers• How the eye responds

to light• The capability of the

visual system• Units, terminology and

calculations associated with light

• Interpretation of photometric data

• Basic light measurement

• Basic theory and principles of colour in light

• Energy efficiency considerations

• The future direction of the lighting market

Light Sources and Luminaires

A day-long course to develop awareness of the types of light sources and luminaires available. This includes both modern sources and those sources which have historically been used which may still be encountered in day to day work.

The course covers:• Types of light sources

and their uses, advantages and disadvantages

• The operation and use of solid-state lighting

• How luminaires are constructed and classified

• Considerations for retrofit of lighting systems

• The future of light sources and luminaires

Lighting Design

A day long course to develop your awareness of lighting design considerations. It looks at the approach and techniques used by lighting designers which allow successful designs to be created and controlled to meet a client’s need.

The course covers:• The impact of lamp

maintenance and replacement on design

• Planning a layout• Considerations for

emergency lighting• Use of colour in lighting

schemes• Types of control

regimes• Considerations for

retrofit of lighting systems

• Importance of testing and commissioning verification

The LIA Certificate modules are all offered as stand-alone courses

Advanced Certificate Courses

The Advanced Certificate courses fulfil the learner’s desire and need to know more and provide the crucial next step for progressing careers in lighting, be it in product development, sales, or application and design.

The courses are structured in the very way the design industry works: first creating the Concept, how to collaborate with the project team, and communicate the vision to the client team. Then on to Detailed Design and Engineering to realise designs and looks at best practice and methods of checking the proposal will work. The final stage of the course, the Specification of the Design, looks at the documents, drawings, schedules, contracts and legal responsibilities that deliver and govern.

The course covers:• Using a people and design focused

approach based on understanding the client needs, perception, recognition and orientation

• Understanding the natural world and using this with predictive laws as the basis for your design vision

• Looking at Sunlight and Daylight Modelling, their importance as part of the design, the integration with artificial lighting and controls and the importance overall of integrated design

• Communication of the design intent to non-lighting clients using images, sketches, wording and the science

• The current understanding and limitations of Human Centric Lighting and the use of changing dynamics in current design

• Roles and communicating with the wider design team, convincing and specifying for the design team, controlling the alternatives and proving your concept

• The importance of people, identifying the users and their tasks and needs

and putting this central to your solution

• The application and limitations of Illuminance, luminance, Contrast and Glare and returning to designed appearance as a basis for the credible design

• Energy & Sustainability from raw energy to useful light and strategies to really impact energy use by understanding people, daylight, sensors and the use of spaces

• The course uses examples of good and bad practice and talks through exemplary projects to reinforce learning points

• Delegates are introduced to the design stages, effective use of schedules, the management and legal responsibilities around risk and the fundamentals of contracts

• The mood boards, sketching techniques, graphical techniques, computer modelling, CAD and BIM drawings and schedules we must prepare or work within our design work
