SAVANNAH FIRE RECOGNIZES TEEN HERO!!
Tuesday, August 21, 2018 Savannah Fire Chief Charles G. Middleton
recognized teen hero Taequan Mitchell for rescuing his 85-year-old
neighbor from a burning home. Taequan was honored on the steps of his
home.
Just before 10 p.m. Monday night Taequan’s mother and uncle noticed
smoke streaming from the home of their elderly neighbor, Stephen
Solomon, at 2238 Alaska St. They sent Taequan across the street to
investigate. When Taequan realized that the air conditioning unit in Mr.
Solomon’s bedroom window was on fire, he asked his mother to call the
fire department and attempted to alert Solomon to the danger. However
Mr. Solomon was asleep in the burning room. Taequan, a 17-year-old
Savannah High School Student, entered the home, woke Mr. Solomon,
pulled him from the house and waited with him until Savannah Fire
arrived to extinguish the blaze.
Not only did Taequan exhibit exemplary bravery, he had the foresight to
close the door of the burning room, which helped to prevent the fire and
smoke from spreading throughout the structure. Savannah Fire arrived
on scene within three minutes of receiving the call and quickly
extinguished the blaze. Although Mr. Solomon will be displaced from the
home until the power is restored, the fire was contained to the bedroom
and no one was injured.
Savannah Fire would like to extend our sincere gratitude and
appreciation for the selfless and life-saving actions of Taequan Mitchell.

COMCAST SURPRISES 100 SCCPSS STUDENTS WITH
LAPTOPS AT DIGITAL LITERACY RALLY!!
There were smiles all around at Butler Elementary School on
Wednesday, August 15th, 2018 as Comcast partnered with
Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools to host a digital
literacy assembly. During the assembly, one hundred students
from Butler Elementary, Mercer Middle and Myers Middle were
surprised with the gift of laptop computers from Comcast!
Comcast Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer David L. Cohen joined national spokespeople and U.S. Olympic Gold Medalists Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando to speak at the school assembly about the importance of using the internet for school work. The Olympic champions told the students about their childhood using dial-up internet in a North Dakota home with a family of eight. They said the experience of trying to get their schoolwork done with limited access helped them understand the struggles that students without access may have and made them want to do all they could to advocate for better access for students.
According to the U.S. Census American Community Survey, 81
percent of all U.S. households subscribe to broadband at home,
but only 63 percent of households with an annual income of less
than $35,000 do. To attack that problem, Comcast’s Internet
Essentials program partners with SCCPSS and others around the
nation to provide an integrated, wrap-around design meant to
address each of the three major barriers to broadband adoption
that research has identified. These include: a lack of digital
literacy skills, the lack of a computer, and the absence of a low-
cost Internet service.
