Hej!

I'm a master student enrolled in Umeå University in the far north of Sweden and I'm studying to become a automotive designer.Coming from one of the most populated area and biggest automotive market in the world as a female designer I have a deep understanding of what mobility solutions means to city and development, and I'm very excited about the changes the industry is going through at the moment as well as huge opportunities coming along with that. Our country didn't have a car culture as I grew up, but it's time to shape the future of mobility experience.

The past year I spent in Umea was precious. I learnt all kinds of different skills in projects where I get to cooperate not only with talented people from different culture backgrounds, But also from other design fields such as interaction design. These experience makes me see myself clearer and what kind of career path I'm pursuing now.

I see myself as an interior and user experience designer that focuses on the people and how they communicate with their vehicle. It shouldn't be merely a shell.

I'm interested in where your creative team is heading and really hope I'll get the chance to join you and learn as well as contribute. Any feedback would be appreciated. ;)

VOLVO AURA//Volvo Wellbeing 5.08-weekTeam Project (Markus Anderer/Mehek Sharma/Lukas Flynn)Research/Storyboard/Interior/UX

Topic is to design a vehicle that redefine the concept of wellbeing with a higher level of automation. We're encouraged to think when driving is no longer the focus, what kind of experience Volvo, as a brand that values human centered design and safety, could bring.

GENTLEC&M

With autonomy level 5, we have great opportunity to focus on the wellbeing of passengers. For people that live in a city and can't really leave whenever they want, we want to offer the experience as good as an escape into nature which makes them leave their burden for a minute.

VOLVO has the image of being a car brand that puts safety before everthing else. VOLVO has promised that by 2020, no one will be killed or severly injured in a VOLVO. We envision that by 2030, the car will protect you from cyber attacts and internal threats like paroxysmal disease.

Progressive Disclosure is the design thinking that guide us throughout the process. It means to reveal imformation gradually, only when you need them. It fits perfectly with our idea to help people find peace away from the digital world inside the vehicle. It also determined that the interior will be as simple as possible. hiding all the screens and mechanism and gently reveals the only crucial function when it's time. So the theory applied both to interaction side and interior design side and therefore leads to outcomes that work well together.

G e n t l e h e re m e a n s u s i n g color and material that gives a we lcoming, tac t i l e , warm feeling. Instead of characters like technological, luxurious or cold and metallic.

Sensorial Experience is another guidel ine of the inter ior design. S t a r t i n g f ro m t h e e x p e r i e n c e perspective to design means, instead of thinking about all the things that are always there in interior. I think about what is necessary to provide the experience that activates all senses, and bring people to a whole new world.

AURACLE

PROTOTYPE

There's study proving that just by adding one more sense, the experience will be brought to a whole new level. In order for a holistic experience, there're different outputs to reinforce it.

We tested the ergonomics of both the dish console and the Auracle display and decided the final size and shape for them.

DISH CONSOLE

During the project, we invited our tutors from VOLVO to experience the design with working prototype. As for demonstration, we chose "pine forest" as our theme. Each of the participants had the chance to sit in a soft chair, with sound and smell of pine trees surround, and to look at the abstract color and light as shown.

As our honest participants said afterwards, the experience turned out to be really memorable and convincing.

IVECO VERSA//Covestro Sponsored Project. In Collaboration With IVECO.10-weekTeam Project (Edwin Senger) Research/Storyboard/Interior design

Th focus of this project is to design a highway coach for 2030 and to see the potential use polycarbonate material in the design.

Page 28: LINGXI YUAN 2018// MFA TRANSPORTATION D ESIGN

Compared to other means of public and private transportation at similar traveling distance, and only obvious advantage of highway buses today is its cheap price.

C h i n a 2 0 3 0With the development of economy and unbarnization comes the increasing demand of public transportation that connects relatively smaller cities that are not yet connected by railways. The ambitious constrction plan of highways in 2030 China seems a great opportunity to consider the role highway coaches play in such scenario.

R e a l i t y

Since the vehicle is for public use. We found three typical personas in our consumer group that represents different travel pattern and core needs when it comes to a long bus travel. So the challenge became to find a solution that fits all their core needs.

ConceptsInterior Design

In the ideation phase, me and my colleague had a lot of discussions and brainstorms to come up with what we think is the necessary functions in a highway coach. As well as things to add and things to compromise.

Page 31: LINGXI YUAN 2018// MFA TRANSPORTATION D ESIGN

Different ZonesInterior Design

We eventually came up with the final design of a passenger zone, a steward office in the back of the car, and an extended space of lounge area for when the bus goes steadily on the highway.

have a good restrecline the back of the chair with simple touch on the 'ring', then lay back and relax.

'ring'foot rest and head rest intergrated on the ring can be extended to suit people of different heights.

Passenger ZoneInterior Design

My main focus of the interior design is the seat design in the passenger zone, because it needs to be able to rotate/slide/and extend according to personal need for a premium experience. Also it needs to be able to accomodate occasions of group travels as well as individual travels, of which privacy is the main focus.

Page 33: LINGXI YUAN 2018// MFA TRANSPORTATION D ESIGN

Customization based on travel group and ergonomics.

Interior Design

It is a bit like booking in a movie theater. A single passenger should not be placed next to each other with an empty seat in between. This makes sure there's always room for bigger travel groups.after choosing destination and travelling groups, you can personalize each seat a little bit within the moving range of individual parts based on your height, weight and perfered seating angle.

Your own Phone as extension of services While on the bus, you can choose from a range of services embedded in the app from your personal mobile device. These includes services on board such as ordering food and drinks, and journey information, such as your whereabouts and things near you.Besides these, you can also drag in your local gaming apps or lifestyle apps onto the screen to make it more suitable for your need. and continue with whatever you're working on in a healthier posture, on a bigger screen.

Page 34: LINGXI YUAN 2018// MFA TRANSPORTATION D ESIGN

Interaction

" D OT S " I n t e r f a c e"DOTS" is an interface intergrated in the side window. The basic idea is to find a simple yet fun way to cope with the changing need for information display as well as privacy.

The size and density of dots can be changed by using simple hand gestures. Also basic information about journey can be shown by "dots".

The side windows are made of polycarbonate and a thin layer of smart film on top of that to make the window into displays. 1 2

G e s t u r e c o n t r o lBy using the technology of smart film, any transparent surface can be turned into a screen. This will completely break the limitations of how we design screens nowadays. I imagine it will no longer be a hardware to be added on the back of a seat. but becoming a bigger canvas.

Screens that can sensing simple hand gestures will make the playing with dots intuitive and fun. Even those who use it for the first time will have no trouble grasping how it works.

3

P r i v a c y a t n i g h t ,N a t u r a l l i g h t i n g d u r i n g d a yThe very basic function of the dots, when they're not an display, is to adjust the amount of natural lighting from outside by changing its number and density.This can be also controlled intuitively using simple hand gesture as shown.

The brief of this project is to find a design language through experimenting something unfamiliar with or not commonly used in automotive industry. The language should be representing a personal interest or aesthetics, so it's also a process of self exploration and expression.

I chose balloons as my experiemental subject and made a lot of prototypes to understand what is it that gives people playful and lightweight feeling and that could be harness i222n creating a general language. From those, I got many inspring surfaces and volumes. At the same time, I found material qualities like the in-flation and deflation and the change of transparency and color density very interesting as well, these may not be used for styling but can be a really innovative way to visualize information.

Concept direction 1Form focused

In the end, I took two different approaches to demonstrate the possible usage of this form language. For the first one, I focuesed more on form language, and try to design a holis-tic interior using mainly the two images from before. The clamping feature gave the whole volume the light feeling that I was looking for.

Page 39: LINGXI YUAN 2018// MFA TRANSPORTATION D ESIGN

Concept direction 2function focused

For this direction, I try to think really conceptual, to create a whole interior around a pure balloon shaped control system. and imagine the interaction with the balloon ball to be the main attraction point of the vehicle.
