We have had another busy half term at school with many activities taking place.

Some of our parents have enjoyed a music workshop with their children and Miss Guilfoyle, our music specialist. The course has run over 4 weeks for parents of children in years 1 and 2. The parents were enthusiastic to try many ways of making music with their children. One parent commented “I found it surprisingly interesting and very useful. I have been using some of these ideas at home with my three children including the baby”

Next term we hope to run this workshop again for parents and children in Nursery and Reception classes.

Children in our school choirs are working towards a musical evening to be held in May. This is in response to many requests from parents and parishioners who enjoyed a similar event in November last year. Our School Council members have been busy working with other schools in

Fleetwood regarding a vision for the future of Fleetwood schools in connection with the Primary Capital project. Our 'PCP Working Party' has collected the ideas of all the children in our school and then shared these with children from other Fleetwood schools.

Last week our 'working party' visited the Rock FM Media bus to record some of these ideas for inclusion in an article on the Rock FM website. Two of our children are also to visit the Rock FM studio in Preston next week.

Over the last 8 weeks a group of parents has been working with a tutor from Lancashire Adult Learning writing an information leaflet for parents written by parents. This group ‘Parents supporting Parents’ will also be available to support parents and the school on many occasions during the school year. They will be at open evenings and induction events and will be able to support parents of children joining our school during the school year.

We hope this group will go from strength to strength in the coming months and years.

The Year 5 Voltage Project has gone from strength to strength. The children attended a successful Celebration Event at the Marine Hall along with our VIP’s and all of the other local Primary Schools. It was wonderful to see so much positive creative talent in our town. We have now received orders for over £700 worth of our ‘I LOVE FLEETWOOD’ range of merchandise. Demand has been so huge that they are in the process of re-printing all of the badges, bags and T-shirts. Final orders for merchandise will be taken after Easter.

Plans are in hand for a school ‘I love Fleetwood day’ in the summer term.

FIRST DRIVE:

CITROEN

The CITROEN DS3 IS STYLISH, WELL-EQUIPPED AND LUXURIOUS. PATTERNED CARPETS, COLOURED SEAT INLAYS AND DASHES OF CHROME ADD TO THE OVERALL UPMARKET FEEL.

I t has been some time since Mini could claim to have the market cornered for trendy city cars boasting both style and substance, but the fashionable high-streets currently dominated by the ever-expanding Mini range, the Alfa Romeo

Mito and the smaller but all-conquering Fiat 500 are about to become even more lively with the arrival of the Citroen DS3. When a production model resembles its concept predecessor so closely it is a sure sign that the manufacturer is about to try something new. With the C3 updated for the new decade and the recent arrival of the practical but creatively styled C3 Picasso taking care of the volume compact hatchback and compact MPV sector, the DS3 is a new attempt to break into the premium compact hatchback sector with a stylish, well-equipped and generally more luxurious model.

At first glance, Citroen appears to have cracked it. There are bold styling gestures that may or may not be immediately liked and that may or may not grow on car-buyers over time, but as a package the DS3 is every bit as attractive and arguably more forward thinking in its design than its rivals.

Unlike some of the competition the DS3 is not a modern take

on past glories. Attempting to be a design classic in its own right, the model can hardly be accused of trading on its name either. Car historians and Citroen fanatics may raise an eyebrow at the rekindling of the DS moniker, but the French manufacturer is not claiming the DS3 is a modern interpretation of the fifties style icon. The DS4 and DS5 models that will follow shortly will make no such claims, either.

The intention of the DS sub (or uber) brand is visible in the lack of Citroen chevrons on the rear. A special DS badge takes their place, marking the DS line-up out as a range in its own right. That said, the visual similarities to the Citroen C3 are present inside and out, but DS3 customers can expect a far greater degree of customisation from their cars. Citroen has retooled its factory especially to deal with two-tone bodywork and roof decals of the DS3. The basic layout of the DS3 interior is familiar from the standard new C3, but there are more than enough additions to make the luxury model feel just that. Dashboards can be specified in a range of colours and shapely interior panels are soft to touch and lined with more exuberant materials. Patterned carpets, coloured seat inlays and dashes of chrome add to the upmarket feel. Recessed dials are complimented with internally lit needles that jump into life when the engine starts. With the range-topping 154bhp turbocharged petrol engine drivers will also be met with an appealing, sporty exhaust note. The engine, the result of a partnership between Peugeot, Citroen and BMW proves well suited to the DS3 in 150 THP form, making the car feel far keener than the Citroen C3. The crisp gear change and responsive, well-weighted steering help, too. The suspension is firm and the DS3 can be chucked into bends with confidence, but it's also damped to deal with rougher surfaces even on the DSport model's 17-inch wheels. As a compromise between city driving and the open road it's hard to fault. The DS3 shouldn't prove a struggle to live with, either. The boot is very accommodating and, while the three-

door body naturally restricts access to the rear, it will suit for two adults over shorter journeys. The chunky B-pillar may spoil their view somewhat, but visibility from the driver's seat is very good and the front passenger benefits from a recessed glove compartment that allows extra legroom. Three trim levels - DSport, DStyle, DSign - are available dependant on engine choice and there are enough customisation opportunities to give the DS3 a truly bespoke feel. A 99g/km CO2 emitting model should also attract attention from fashionable city car fans. Tax-free status could be as appealing as the floating roof and LED running lamps. It is more than adequately equipped to tackle the competitive but lucrative premium small car segment in the styling stakes, but the DS3's enjoyable driving experience and neat packaging give it more than just high street chic.

F or many, changes in design are often made to accommodate the lack of time available to tend their garden. This can mean losing areas of lawn which are high maintenance and fiddly to mow, replacing perennial borders with

evergreens to add interest all year round, and introducing large all-year plants to containers rather than annuals which have to be changed from season to season. There are some who fear that a low-maintenance garden will become dull and colourless or simply a haven to paving slabs and concrete, but it doesn't have to be that way. Cottage gardens are probably out for the time-strapped gardener as they are generally teeming with plants which need some care, including annuals, perennials and roses and although they may look natural, they need an awful lot of cutting back and dead-heading.

Likewise, traditional formal gardens with the neatest of flower borders, bowling green lawns and carefully-clipped hedges require a lot of maintenance and time. You can, however, create a visually pleasing space which won't take huge amounts of time to tend if you plan carefully.

This time of the YEAR IS OFTEN THE TIME WHEN MANY GARDENERS PLAN WHAT TO GROW IN THEIR VEGETABLE AND FLOWER BORDERS AND LOOK INTO CHANGING THEIR GARDEN'S DESIGN.

DESIGN A TIME-SAVING GARDEN

Small, enclosed spaces are perfect for paving, which could be surrounded by raised beds, narrow borders and pots, so you can still experiment with planting but won't be weeding and digging for hours on end. You might include different textures to your hard landscaping to create interest, such as ceramics or cobbles. Raised beds can also offer casual seating and changes in level to an otherwise-featureless space. Low-maintenance larger gardens can be separated into compartments which can be screened from each other to provide surprises and changes in mood. Many ornamental grasses, including Stipa tenuissima and sedges (Carex), can be dotted at ground level in gravel or slate to provide texture to otherwise boring areas. Large single specimen plants of architectural interest, such as Japanese maples or phormiums, stand out if placed against uncluttered backdrops and can provide a far more pleasing picture than a series of smaller pots containing a variety of different plants. To reduce maintenance, use fences with climbing plants rather than hedges which need trimming, paths of gravel or bricks instead of grass ones

and self-watering hanging baskets instead of free-draining ones.

Don't make your flower borders too deep as you'll end up becoming a slave to weeding and watering. Use reliable ground cover plants such as cranesbill geranium to take up any visible soil space and mulch your borders and areas of bare ground to suppress weeds. Paved or decked areas, which are easy to keep tidy and weed-free, provide the hard landscaping for you to tend your surrounding plants, which ideally should include a selection of low maintenance flowering shrubs and evergreens.

Remember, that while

some gardens can

be low

maintenance, no garden is

'no maintenance'.

Work out how much time you are going to

have to look after your garden and then plan

accordingly. Take time now to make design

changes and you'll save a heap of time later

in the season.

BE A GOURMET

T he Cordon Vert School has an unrivalled reputation for excellent, imaginative and innovative vegetarian cuisine, drawing on the variety of international flavours and

ingredients reflecting current trends in world cuisine with fresh and imaginative ideas. If you fancy trying out some of their vegetarian recipes, why not try the following?...

60g Camargue red rice 1 medium red onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 30 ml olive oil 1/2 tsp Ras el Hanout 20g sultanas 1 tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 tbsp mint, finely chopped 175g halloumi 4 sweet pointed red (Ramiro) peppers small bag of mixed leaves Heat the oven to 1900C/3750F/Gas 5. Cook the rice for 20 minutes and then rinse briefly with cold water and drain to ensure grains are separate. Saute the onion and garlic in 1 tbsp oil until soft, then add the Ras el Hanout and cook for a further 2 minutes.

Add the sultanas, herbs and rice and take off the heat. Cut 4 thick slices of halloumi (approximately 5 mm thick) and dry fry in a non stick pan until golden on each side. When cool enough to handle cut into small dice, and add to onion mixture. Cut off the top of the peppers and shake out the seeds. Then using a small spoon with a long handle or chopsticks, carefully pack the mixture into the pepper cavity. Place the peppers in a roasting tin, drizzle with the remaining oil and bake for 15 minutes until the skin of the peppers are just beginning to soften. To serve, slice each pepper into 3 portions and place on a bed of leaves.

Serves 4-6

sweet ramiro peppers stuffed with halloumi, mint & flavoured with Ras el Hanout

VEGGIE - GO CORDON VERT

Long gone are the days where vegetarian cuisine is limited to nut roasts and veggie lasagne. The Cordon Vert Cookery School and Vegetarian Association suggest veggie mezze delights which will impress all.

Businesses Celebrated

O n Wednesday 3rd March, 7 schools from Fleetwood gathered at the Marine Hall to

showcase their businesses. In January they began the process of creating and running their own social enterprises as part of Lancaster University Volunteering Unit’s Primary Voltage project.

Year 5s from Shakespeare Primary School, Flakefleet Primary School, Thornton Primary School, Chaucer Community Primary School, Charles Saer Community Primary School, Larkholme Primary School, St Wulstan’s and St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School identified an issue which they cared about. During a business building day hosted by Lancaster University, and with the help of LUVU volunteers, they created a business which would generate money to help resolve their issue.

The Celebration held at the Marine Hall gave each of the classes a chance to showcase their businesses in front of the other schools, parents and local VIPs including the Worshipful the Mayor of Wyre, Councillor Alan Vincent and the Mayoress, Kath Vincent. The event was a huge success, playing host to some amazing presentations. The mini entrepreneurs gave faultless presentations and were completely undaunted by the 450 person crowd! Charles Saer Community Primary, who are raising money to transform their quad area so they can adopt ex-battery chickens and abandoned rabbits, even produced a short animation using plasticine animals!

Businesses included Flakefleet Fluids who are selling reusable water bottles in order to purchase new playground equipment for their school. They have been so popular they have sold out! Larkholme Primary School decided to design, make and sell their own greetings cards. The money raised is being donated to WWF to help endangered animals. St

Wulstan’s and St Edmund’s have been selling T-shirts, bags and badges with the logos I FD, I FY7 & I FTFC The profits are being donated to a charity which plants trees in order to help reduce global warming. They are looking to expand their product range so keep your eyes peeled!

“The Voltage project aims to help children

understand finance and business and how they can affect their own lives and futures, those around them in their community and the global community. It also gives the classes a chance to develop important skills such as team working and decision making. Katrina from LUVU commented on the project, saying “We have been really impressed with the quality of the businesses and the progress they have made! A big thank you goes to all the teachers and volunteers who have been involved in the project. We look forward to hearing about the progress of the businesses in the future.

H ello, allow me to introduce myself, I am Sgt David Blight and I run the Fleetwood

Neighbourhood Policing Team. By way of introduction, the team consists of 4 Community Beat Managers, or CBM’s, who are all Police Constables, and 9 Police Community Support Officers, or PCSO’s.

Fleetwood is split into 5 council ward areas. Each ward has a CBM and a PCSO allocated to it who will manage the Anti Social Behaviour and associated offences such as Criminal Damage. They will also deal with more long term problems relevant to particular communities. Our overriding aim being, to make Fleetwood a safe place in which to live, work and play and to help achieve this, my team are responsible for engaging with you fully and providing a visible presence in your communities.

My intention is to write a brief article for this magazine each month in order to highlight to you the work we are doing in order to achieve our aim and to tackle the problems you are telling us about.

It will also be an opportunity to let you know the results we are having in making Fleetwood safer.

As a department we have been talking to you more and more and listening to your concerns. In the early summer we altered our shift patterns to double the numbers of Neighbourhood Policing Officers on duty every weekend in the evening; this being the times of your biggest problems.

We have targeted persistent offenders; those who refused to accept good advice and/or help. Many of those individuals have, as a direct result of our targeting, been sent to prison over the course of the last 12 months. But conversely several of those we targeted did in fact take on board the advice and help and have stopped re-offending against you.

In addition to providing a highly visible presence in your wards, we also provide a structured programme of educational inputs into the high schools in the area, to steer young people away from the temptation to commit crime or get involved in Anti Social Behaviour. These lessons reach every child in

Fleetwood at some point in their education. We are currently looking to extend this into all primary schools in the near future, with an emphasis on personal safety and respect.

We work with a great many partner agencies, such as Wyre Borough Council, the schools as mentioned, health services and housing agencies to name but a few, in order to resolve the issues that arise.

We also act on all information we receive and have conducted many search warrants throughout the year, for example closing down 2 cannabis factories which had been set up in town centre rental properties.

We will continually strive to improve the safety of Fleetwood in everything we do and we look to you to help us do this. For example we very recently conducted a survey of all the residents in the area of the Memorial Park and as a result have embarked on an operation to work with parents and youth groups to deter large groups of youths gathering there and provide them with more constructive outlets and activities in the town.

Y ou can assist us in our ambition to make Fleetwood as safe as possible, by attending any

of the regular PACT Meetings which are held every month in each ward area, full details of which can be found at the police station or on the Lancashire Constabulary Website. If you cannot get to the police station and have no internet access, you can telephone the department direct on 604911 and leave a message and one of my team will call you back within 24hours with the information. This is not a staffed number so do not use it if you require the police to attend more urgently than within 24hours. If this is the case call 0845 1 25 35 45 or 999 in an emergency of if a crime is being committed.

As ever, if you have any information that will help in our fight against crime or disorder, you can call Crimestoppers for free and anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Round Up by Derick Thomas

F leetwood Town’s under 12 girls side took to the Highbury pitch recently but didn’t have a football

insight. Instead, the girls participated in the Sport Relief mile by completing five laps of the stadium. Not only did the youngsters complete the mile but they undertook the challenge as a three legged race.

Manager Paul Hearty organised the event and said it was a worthwhile exercise. “The event is for a good cause and we raised a couple of hundred pounds for Sport Relief. Not only that, it was a good team building exercise for the girls. The event has brought the team closer together and that can only benefit us on the pitch. Our season has been

good so far and we are through to the final of the league cup.”

The girls beat Lytham YMCA 4-1 to book their place in the North Valley League Cup Semi Final.

Fleetwood Town finished their last three games of March away from home and bagged seven points out of nine. A draw at Stafford Rangers and wins at Harrogate Town and a dramatic late winner from Adam Warlow at Stalybridge Celtic ensured Town’s promotion push to the Blue Square Premier remained on course.

Warlow said "We went one up. Stalybridge then came back in the second half to take the lead. The lads showed fantastic character to come back from 2-1 down. Scoring two late goals, including the winner, was unbelievable. I’ve never felt anything like it in football."

Town’s last game of the season is at home against Stalybridge Celtic and the club is hoping for another bump crowd. The highest gate this season was on New Years’ Day when over 2,500 supporters watched Micky Mellon’s men thrash Southport 4-0.

Fleetwood Town

overcame a one-nil half time deficit to inflict a heavy defeat on Manchester-based Pennington and lift the Lancashire FA Under 18 Youth Cup.

Striker Scott Thompson scored the first of his hat trick just 40 seconds after the restart and set the tone for Town’s deserved comeback. Thompson added a further two for his hat trick, whilst Mark France and Kyle Bennett scored the other two goals.

Manager Mike Sumner said “I’m very proud of my team. Every one of the lads did just what they were asked and kept their

discipline and shape. That helped us take the game and lift the trophy. We had all the play in the first half and I told the lads to relax and go out and play their game. They did just that, kept hold of the ball and scored five good goals.

“Loosing Grant Dell so early in the game was a massive blow but Kyle Bennett came on and did a good job. Scott Thompson is one of our better players when he’s on top form and he showed just that tonight.

“The cup final win is great news for the club and for the under 18 staff who work with me – Mark Bowley and Steve Kershaw” added Sumner.
