Hands-on appeal for Fleetwood clean up

A new start for the new year.

That's one resolution Fleetwood folk are being encouraged to make by the organisers of a Cleansweep in Pharos ward.

A multi-agency approach will see an intensive clean-up of the area between 24 and 28 January. As well as a major purge on physical blights such as fly-tipping, graffiti and dog fouling, officers will be dealing with other issues that have a negative effect on neighbourhoods, such as anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime.

Exact details of the activities will be worked out in the coming weeks, but in the mean time the Wyre Community Safety Partnership is appealing for com-munity groups, schools, streets and individuals to think about how they could get involved.

Ideas that have worked well in previous Cleansweeps include litter picks and bulb planting. Community leaders have also take the time to help with a visual audit the week before the main event, when officers tour the whole area making notes of anything that needs addressing.

But new suggestions are always welcome.

Councillor Roger Berry, Chairman of the Wyre Community Safety Partnership, said: "We have lots of initiatives planned, everything from removing unwanted bulky items from people's houses to test purchases in off licences and pubs.

"We are making a positive start in Pharos ward as we look forward to the celebrations for Fleetwood's 175th anniversary year.

"The more involvement we have from the community, the better and longer lasting the results, so we would encourage as many people as possible to get in-volved."

Anyone who wants to be part of the Pharos Cleansweep should telephone 01253 887236.

Help needed to catch Fleetwood fly-tippers

Fleetwood folk are being asked to come forward with information following a spate of fly-tipping in the town.

Three large tips have been discovered within the last week and waste bosses at Wyre Borough Council are now appealing for help with finding out who was responsible.

The biggest haul was found on 14 December. Four tonnes of builders waste was dumped on Jameson Road, mostly old fashioned roof slates and felt.

A large tip was also found at the rear of Hazeldene Avenue on 10 December and another at the rear of Lindel Road on 13 December. These were a combination of garden waste and kitchen and bathroom fittings.

All three were removed but the council the same day as they were reported.

Councillor Paul Moon, Cabinet member with responsibility for fly-tipping at Wyre Borough Council, said: "The irresponsible few who dump their waste like this are not just spoiling our neighbourhoods, they are also putting unnecessary pressure on our finances.

"Every time there is a fly tipping incident, it costs

several hundred pounds in removal equipment and landfill costs, plus a great deal of officer time. All of this has to be paid for by public money, so it affects everyone.

"The only way we can find and take action against these people is to gather evidence and that's where the public comes in. We're asking anyone who might know anything about these incidents to talk to us in confidence.

"People may have seen the fly-tipping taking place. If they've had a replacement roof or bathroom fitted in the past few days or had their garden cleared, they may have suspicions about how the builder disposed of the waste.

"Any information, however small, may be enough to allow us to take action."

Residents are reminded of the council's reward scheme that pays out £100 to anyone providing information leading to the prosecution of anyone who illegally dumps rubbish on public land.

Get voting for Fleetwood Market Forget X Factor, Strictly and the Jungle. The hottest vote in town right now is for Fleetwood Market. Wyre's bastion of value is in the running for Britain's Favourite Market, subject to a public vote online. So owner Wyre Borough Council is urging everyone who has ever enjoyed shopping there, lives in the borough, or just wants some deserved prestige for Fleetwood, to get clicking. Where many other markets are failing or closing be-cause of recession, Fleetwood Market is going from strength to strength, attracting coach trips from all over the country among its many shoppers. Occupancy is now almost 100 per cent with a waiting list. Winter trading days have also been extended to meet de-mand. Market Manager Julian Brent said: "One of the main reasons the market is so popular is that we really do have something for everyone among its 250 stalls. "As a shopper once said to me 'If you can't find it in

Fleetwood Market, it's not worth buying.' "Winning this title would be a real bonus, because it would underline what we already know and would encourage even more people to pay us a visit. And that can only be a good thing for the wider economy." Casting your vote is free and takes seconds. You don't even have to enter any personal details. Just go to www.nabma.com, click on the apple icon and follow the instructions, then ask all your friends to do the same. The poll closes on 13 January 2011 and the winner will be announced on 27 January.

Pupil Power Some tough decisions had to be made by youngsters from Fleetwood High School when they were put

"in charge" of council coffers for an afternoon. The Year 7 students were taking part in a Pupil Power exercise, run by Wyre Borough Council, that challenged them to get the most out of a tight budget and decide which public services they would have to lose to balance the books. The debate was guided by Wyre councillors and among those considered less of a priority by pupils were parks, Tourist Information Centres and public toilets. Pupil Power, which is open to all high schools, is designed to help young people appreciate the deci-sions that have to be made in local government. Pictured above - Councillor David Walmsley helps pupils decide how to balance the books.

Permission granted for new Rossall Point tower Plans for a new observatory tower on the Rossall coastline have been given the go ahead. Wyre Borough Council's Planning Committee unanimously granted permission for the iconic structure, part of the £1.6m Sea Change programme to improve the waterfront, which is set to become something of a destination centre. Now more detailed work on the design and materials will begin ready for construction to start in the spring. Features of the tower, replacing an existing out dated facility used by the National Coast Watch Initiative (NCI) at Rossall Point, include several viewing platforms open to the public, an education centre on the ground floor where views from the top will be projected on to screens and a new home for the NCI volunteers. Protecting the natural environment will be a primary concern throughout the building phase. As a result much of the construction will take place off site. Disruption to the surrounding pathways will also be kept to an absolute minimum. Mushtaq Saleri of architects Studio Three who are leading the project on behalf of Wyre Borough Council, said: "We are delighted that things are now moving forward. "In the coming weeks and months we'll be putting the detail together, working with stakeholders such as Coast Watch, local bird watchers and Wyre's countryside rangers.

"Engagement with the people of Fleetwood will also continue as we develop the artwork. We're looking to make it part of the structure, not just stuck to the building; something thought provoking that tells a story. The public can really contribute to this with their ideas." Councillor Barry Birch, the council's cabinet member with responsibility for the Sea Change project, added: "Things can really start to move on apace now that planning permission has been secured. "Together with the proposed improvements to Marine Gardens, we are confident the observatory tower will create a new point of interest and attract some new visitors to a part of our coastline that often gets overlooked." It is hoped the facility will be operational by autumn 2011.

Mount Racing Club On a cold Thursday afternoon The Mount Racing Club travelled down to Dunstall Park Racecourse at Wolverhampton for the last race on the card a 1m4f handicap. Hopes were high that their versatile 3yo star Valantino Oyster could follow on from his impressive debut the week before where he finished 3rd and maybe this time fare even better. Sent off favourite at odds of 6/4 he travelled nicely throughout and as they turned for home it became clear that he was the only horse that was to throw down a challenge to the long time leader Port Hill. Under a determined drive from jockey Paddy Donaghy he began to claw back the leader and as the post loomed he drew along side until neck and neck they flashed past the judge together. It was a nail biting few minutes for all the Mount Racing Club members who were trackside but unfortunately the outcome of the photo finish went against us and Valantino was beaten by the shortest of short heads. This was another solid run from Valantino Oyster and one that suggests next time out it could be his turn for winning. To date Valantino Oyster has won twice on the Turf, finished 2nd and 3rd on the All Weather and 3rd over Hurdles behind a very decent Tim Vaughn horse called Architrave. His next assignment will probably be back at Wolverhampton in the New Year where we hope to be gracing the Winners enclosure once again. Then he will

be given a short break to freshen him up before resuming his Hurdling career in the Spring. The idea to purchase this versatile horse from the powerful Howard Johnson’s yard in summer certainly has proved to be a good one and whatever code of Racing he takes in we can certainly see him winning a lot more races for us. There are still a few shares left in him and anyone interested in getting involved or visiting the stables in Middleham can contact Geoff 07852 153969 or Andy 07940 202312 for further info. Fleetwood Gym FC Fleetwood Gym FC would like to first of all wish you all a Happy New Year. Thank you to everybody who turned up and took part in our New Years Day Dip to help raise money for Brian House Child Hospice. This year See Fleetwood Gym introduce our new Soccer Saturday program Fleetwood Gym Soccer Saturday The Sessions held on Saturday mornings for children aged 5-12 years are especially useful for parents who like to pay weekly rather than booking onto block courses. All sessions at King Georges run from 10.00 – 11.00am and are priced at just £2.00. The focus of these sessions, are more fun and game play activities. The slightly slower rate of technique progression allows

children to drop in and out of sessions without missing so large a chunk of their development structure. It also caters for children’s taste, for example match play and goal scoring techniques are allotted more time, thus making these sessions more Child centred. These sessions still incorporate a number of core technique drills before matches, to ensure that children are having regular practise of essential skills relating to match play. A noticeable difference between the Saturday and After School pro-grammes is that drills are often followed by a game, which involves the technique practised together with a shooting drill. For example, heading in pairs would progress into heading towards a goal to score. Without question, all children want to score and all parents want to see their child do the same. After small-sided matches take

place, a Penalty Shoot Out competition is held. This nurtures the child’s ability to deal with some minimal pressure whilst maintaining accurate technique. The winners of these competitions keep trophies for a week. Come and experience all this fantastic new stuff happening at Fleetwood Gym! If you are interested in the please call Steve Cowell on 07583140392 or Barry Whittaker on 07775928332 or see www.fleetwoodgym.co.uk . Manager Required! We are currently looking for a Manager for one of our teams, if you would like to get involved and coach a junior football team then Contact Barry Whittaker
